Ein bevorzugtes Ausführungsbeispiel des Erfin dungsgegenstandes zeichnet sich aus durch eine Schicht aus elektrolumineszierendem Leuchtphosphor; ein erstes Gitter paralleler Leiter, die unter sich einen Abstand aufweisen, auf der einen Seite der genannten Schicht, ein zweites Gitter aus unter sich einen Ab stand aufweisenden, parallelen Leitern auf der anderen Seite der genannten Schicht; wobei die Leiter der beiden Gitter quer zueinander verlaufen;
weiter durch eine erste Schicht aus dielektrischem Material auf dem ersten Gitter; eine zweite Schicht aus dielektrischem Material auf dem zweiten Gitter; einen ersten Elek tronenstrahl, welcher die erste Schicht abtastet, um auf dieser elektrostatische Ladungen zu erzeugen, welche kapazitiv mit den Leitern des ersten Gitters zu koppeln sind;
Arrangement for the optical reproduction of information with a luminous phosphor screen which can be excited by area. The present invention relates to an arrangement for the optical reproduction of information: with a luminous phosphor screen which can be excited by area and relates to a further development of the arrangement described in the main patent.
The main patent describes such an arrangement in which the phosphor screen has a layer of electroluminescent phosphor, in which conductors on one side of the phosphor layer are crossed with respect to conductors on the other side.
This arrangement also has means for applying signal control voltages to said conductors in sequence for the purpose of exciting the luminous phosphor and is characterized in that an impedance layer is provided between the luminous phosphor and at least part of the conductors, which has a non-linear current-voltage characteristic .
The arrangement described in the aforementioned main patent uses mechanical switching means to apply the signal voltages in succession to the individual conductors. While such mechanical means can be effectively used for lower scanning or switching speeds, they do not give completely satisfactory results at the usual television scanning frequencies.
It is therefore a purpose of the present invention to provide such an arrangement which can be operated at the usual television sampling frequencies.
The arrangement according to the invention is also distinguished from that of the main patent in that the signal control voltages are applied to the named conductors in pulses through capacitive coupling devices.
A preferred embodiment of the subject invention is characterized by a layer of electroluminescent luminous phosphor; a first grid of parallel conductors which are spaced apart from one another on one side of said layer; a second grid of parallel conductors on the other side of said layer; the conductors of the two grids being transverse to one another;
further through a first layer of dielectric material on the first grid; a second layer of dielectric material on the second grid; a first electron beam which scans the first layer in order to generate electrostatic charges thereon which are to be capacitively coupled to the conductors of the first grid;
a second electron beam which scans the second layer in order to generate electrostatic charges thereon, which are capacitively coupled to the conductors of the second grid, and finally by means of modulating the two electron beams.
Exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention are explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing.
Fig. 1 shows a plan view of a fluorescent phosphor screen, which uses mechanical means to apply a signal voltage to the crosswise grid, Fig. 2 is a plan view of a first Ausfüh approximately example of the subject of the invention,
3 shows a section along the line 3-3 in FIG. 2, and FIG. 4 shows a cross section through part of a second exemplary embodiment, which is slightly modified from the first exemplary embodiment.
The screen according to FIG. 1 has a layer 1 of electroluminescent luminous phosphor, which lies between a first grid 2 and a second grid 3. The grid 2 consists of a number of conductive, parallel strips 4 facing each other at a distance, and the grid 3 is made up of strips 5 of the same type, which run perpendicular to the conductors 4.
Two mechanical rotary switches 6 and 7 are conductively connected to the individual grid conductors 4 and 5, while a signal voltage source 8 is connected to the rotary arms 9 and 10 of the two switches 6 and 7. When the arms 9 and 10 rotate, the conductors 4 and 5 are verbun individually and in sequence with the signal source 8. If the amplitude of the signal voltage supplied by the source 8 is correctly selected, the phosphor layer 1 can be made to luminesce at the intersections of the conductors 4 and 5 connected to the signal voltage source 8.
For further details regarding the structure and operation of this device shown in Fig. 1, reference should be made to the main patent and also to US Pat. No. 2698915, which shows a similar device. Suitable electroluminescent luminous phosphors are, for example, in the two USA patents Nm. 2,566,349 and 2,698,915.
In the aforementioned main patent, a special screen construction is described and claimed which uses a substance with non-linear impedance in the form of a layer which interacts with the phosphor layer.
This layer consists either of a so-called polarizer or of ferroelectric material, and since either of these two substances can be used in the exemplary embodiments of the present invention and in the same way as is described in the main patent, in the present description in this regard mentioned only as much as is necessary for their understanding.
After the mode of operation of the device according to FIG. 1 and the excitation of the luminous phosphor layer 1 has now been described in broad outline, it will now be transferred to FIGS. 2 and 3, which represent a first embodiment of the present invention. A phosphor layer 1 and an adjacent ferroelectric layer 11 are arranged between the crossed grids 2 and 3. The individual conductors forming these grids each protrude on one side beyond the layers 1 and 11, these protruding parts of the grid conductors being designated by 12 and 13.
With the individual grid conductors 5 and 4 busbars or biasing electrodes 14 and 15 are 16 and 17 connected via suitable separating resistors. The purpose of these resistors is to prevent the corresponding grid conductors from shorting out. A battery 18 supplies a suitable bias voltage to the two busbars 14 and 15 in order to bring the ferroelectric layer 11 into an operating state close to saturation, as set out in the main patent.
By applying a suitable excitation voltage to any two selected grid conductors, such as conductors 19 and 20, the phosphor at point 21, which is at the intersection of conductors 19 and 20, is made to luminesce. It can be seen that by successive and rapid application of an excitation voltage to the corresponding conductors of the grids 2 and 3, a visible contrast image can be generated.
On the protruding ends 12 and 13 of the Lei ter 5 and 4, two cathode ray devices 22 and 23 are mounted. Since these two devices or tubes are identical, only one will be described. The tube has an evacuated piston 24 made of glass or the like of elongated shape and approximately round cross-section, however, in the cross-section, the side 25 is flattened, which rests against the extended ends 12 of the conductor. A suitable conductive coating 26 is provided on the inner wall of the piston, the purpose of which is described below. The cover 26 does not extend over the flattened side 25.
A conventional electron gun 27 is housed in one end of the piston 24, which generates an electron beam which normally describes a path which runs parallel to the plane of the grid extensions 12 and perpendicular to these extensions. The gun 27 is followed by electrostatic deflection plates 28 in the direction of the beam, which deflect the beam only in a plane which is perpendicular to the plane of the extensions 12.
Thus, by applying suitable deflection voltages to the plates 28, the beam can be sequentially guided across all of the guide extensions 12.
It can be seen that in both tubes 22 and 23 the electron beam can be guided over the flattened wall part 25, which rests against the extensions 12 and 13, with the same speed or with different speeds. For the production of a conventional television picture, the scanning speed of the tube 22 would correspond to the image scan and the scanning of the tube 23 would correspond to the line scan.
At this point it is useful to briefly point out a preferred design of the electron gun 27. It is desirable that the current of electron beams be high in operation. and such currents are usually generated with the help of so-called Pierce guns or with conventional triode guns, which produce ribbon-shaped beams with a rectangular cross-section. Such a band-shaped beam is shown in FIG. 2 by the dashed lines 29 and 30 which extend from the cannons of the tubes 22 and 23.
The importance of a high current intensity results from the following considerations: During operation, a video signal is applied to the control grid or to other suitable electrodes of the cannons of the two tubes 22 and 23 in order to modulate the intensity of the corresponding beams. By applying the deflection signals to the two tubes, the point of impact on the wall 25 results along a straight path and causes the release or triggering of secondary electrons from the wall 25, with a ratio greater than 1.
These secondary electrons are collected by the conductive wall coating 26. As a result, the electron beam generates positive charges on the flattened wall part 25, to an extent which corresponds to the instantaneous value of the video signal. During the period of time during which this charge is being built up against a special conductor extension 12 or 13, a voltage pulse is generated on this extension by the capacitive coupling via the intermediate converter. While one tube generates such a charge or such an energy pulse for one of the corresponding grid conductors, the other tube causes the generation of corresponding pulses on the conductors of the other grid.
If one considers the instantaneous state in which the beam 29 generates a charge over the Lei ter 20 and the beam 30 generates a charge over the Lei ter 19, one recognizes d'ass at the crossing point 21 of the two mentioned conductors a point of light is produced. By the beam 29 with a television image sampling frequency over the corre sponding conductor and the beam 30 with the horizon tal line frequency over the associated conductor, a conventional television raster is generated on the phosphor screen 1.
In order to generate pulses of sufficient intensity on the grid conductors, it is necessary, firstly, that the coupling capacitance between the inner surface of the tube and the conductors is high and, secondly, that the beam intensity is high.
A high coupling capacity can be achieved by observing the following requirements: a) the flat wall part 25 should be as thin as possible, and b) air gaps between the outside of the flat wall part 25 and the conductor extensions should be avoided by wrestling a plastic material with a high dielectric constant is used, which acts as a coupling film or coupling layer between the tube wall and the conductor extensions.
A capacitive coupling through the tube wall with the conductors can be achieved in a slightly different form according to the embodiment of FIG. In FIG. 4, the same parts are provided with the same transfer symbols as in the earlier figures. Instead of flattening one wall of the tube in order to produce the flattened wall part 25 of FIG. 3, a flat piece or window 31 made of ferroelectric material is used. This material can be the same as that used for layer 11 of the screen itself.
By means of suitable parts 32, the window 31 is hermetically connected to the actual tube piston, so that the window 31 extends to the conductor. 12 comes to rest in the same way as was the case for the flattened section 25.
Since the ferroelectric window has a high dielectric constant, it can be seen that a high coupling capacitance is achieved with the conductor extensions 12.
Since the electron beam scans the flattened part of the wall quickly, the situation can arise in certain cases that the electrostatic charges generated by a scanning process do not disappear sufficiently quickly. In this case, it is desirable to use a semiconductor coating on the inside of the flattened wall part to extinguish or dissipate the charge shortly after it has been generated. A suitable semiconductor material is titanium oxide dioxide, which is vapor-deposited onto the tube wall in an oxygen atmosphere.
The vapor-deposited film can be subjected to a heat treatment either in a vacuum or in oxygen in order to achieve the desired resistance properties. Another possible way to erase the charges generated by a beam scan before the next scan begins is to reduce the speed of the beam electrons during the retrace period to a value less than that required to generate a secondary emission required value is.
Thus, the electron beam speed is made high during the active scanning cycle in order to generate the necessary secondary emission, while the electron speed is reduced so far during the beam return that the secondary emission ratio is less than 1.
