Description
Process for the production of dimethyl terephthalate The esterification of terephthalic acid with methanol is known to cause difficulties, since the acid is only very sparingly soluble in methanol. This property and the relative one The low boiling point of the methanol causes excessively long esterification times. In order to remedy these disadvantages, one has the method of the United States patent specification 2,578,312 already tried to disperse the alcohol in vapor form through a slurry of the Acid in an inert high-boiling substance, e.g. B. a neutral liquid ester a Pol_vcarbonsäure to pass through at elevated temperature.
It is known that sulfuric acid is esterified with methanol Metal / sulphuric acid forms, it was red; quickly, that with to-ab, - from previously formed # abL, methylsulfuric acid the esterification takes place considerably faster than when this only arises during implementation.
The process is carried out in that for the esterification of terephthalic acid with methanol in the usual manner. The temperature is appropriate at about 60 to 70 ° C. The methylsulfuric acid is used in an amount of 10 to 100 °, '0, based on terephthalic acid.
Man erhält 405 Teile Terephthalsäuredimethylester vom F. = 140,5°C.The parts given in the example are parts by weight. example To 400 parts of dry terephthalic acid and 5500 parts of methanol, which has a water content of 0.02%, 285 parts of methylsulfuric acid are added and the mixture is heated with stirring for 31/2 hours at boiling temperature. After this time it is terephthalic acid almost completely esterified, which can be seen from the fact that a sample of the Reaction mixture is soluble in acetone without turbidity. The one when cooling down from the The ester which precipitates out in the solution is spun off, washed with cold methanol and dried and distilled under reduced pressure. 405 parts of dimethyl terephthalate are obtained from the F. = 140.5 ° C.
