Die Verarbeitung erfolgt häufig nach der sogenannten Warmverarbeitung, bei der die Mischung nach dem Knetdurchgang nicht auf Raumtemperatur abgekühlt wird, sondern ohne Kühlung direkt in ein ausschließlich Speicherzwecken dienendes Walzwerk geführt wird und dann in den Walzenspalt weitergeleitet werden. Der Nachteil einer Warmverarbeitung liegt vor allem darin, dass zwei Großmaschinen im gleichen Zyklus arbeiten müssen und dadurch praktisch immer eine, meist der Kneter, nicht ausgelastet werden kann. Es werden daher Kalander auch mit Vorwärmwerken ausgestattet, um im Kaltprozess zu arbeiten. Bei Kalanderanlagen zur Stahlcordgummierung werden die Stahlcorde von einem Stahlgatter abgewickelt und üblicherweise ebenfalls einem 4-Walzenkalander zugeführt.
