The invention relates to a protective helmet, in particular a ballistic protective helmet, comprising a helmet shell and an adjustment mechanism for adapting the protective helmet to a head size of a user.

When deployed, police officers and soldiers often wear protective helmets to protect their heads from injury. Such protective helmets are known in many designs, for example as ballistic protective helmets for protection against projectiles.

If protective helmets are worn over a longer period of time, it is important that the protective helmet is as comfortable as possible, since otherwise there is a risk of fatigue for the user, which can represent a considerable risk during use. Furthermore, a good fit of the protective helmet is required so that the protective helmet can optimally protect the head of the user. A protective helmet that is too large and does not fit properly on the head or slips cannot guarantee this and may even distract the user from his or her tasks. Protective helmets must therefore be the right size for the user's head so that they fit well and are comfortable to wear. Custom-made protective helmets, which are already adjusted to the head size of the user during manufacture, are ruled out, at least for normal use, due to the considerable costs involved in manufacturing.

Instead, protective helmets are often made in several different helmet sizes. As long as sufficient protective helmets of each of these helmet sizes are kept in stock, a helmet suitable for their head size is available for each user. However, so that a helmet with a suitable helmet size is always available for every user even if the staff changes, more helmets of each helmet size must be kept in stock than are normally required.
