Mit der Erfindung wird vorgeschlagen, zum Starten des Verbrennungsmotors eines Hybridfahrzeugs zunächst einen Schleppstart auszuführen, und zwar dadurch, dass die zwischen Verbrennungsmotor und die elektrische Maschine geschaltete Trennkupplung zumindest teilweise geschlossen wird, um den Verbrennungsmotor über die elektrische Maschine anzuschleppen. Hierbei wird erfindungsgemäß die sich am Verbrennungsmotor ausbildende Drehzahl überwacht. Abhängig von dieser überwachten Drehzahl des Verbrennungsmotors wird der Schleppstart über den Anlasser oder Startergenerator unterstützt. Der Schleppstart wird demnach nicht abgebrochen, sondern weiter durchgeführt. Sollte jedoch die überwachte Drehzahl des Verbrennungsmotors, die sich infolge des Schleppstarts ausbildet, zu gering sein, so wird der Schleppstart über den Anlasser oder Startergenerator unterstützt.
