Description
The invention relates to a method for operating an ultrasonic sensor system of a motor vehicle, in which the ultrasonic sensor system is electrically supplied with an electrical supply voltage of an electrical system of the motor vehicle and in an operating mode of the ultrasonic sensor system, a control unit drives a plurality of ultrasonic sensors for emitting respective transmission signals, which Supply voltage can be generated. The invention also relates to an ultrasonic sensor system which is designed to carry out such a method.
Ultrasonic sensor systems for motor vehicles are already known from the prior art in a variety of configurations. It is already well known in this context to attach a plurality of ultrasonic sensors to the front and the rear bumper of a motor vehicle. By means of the ultrasonic sensors distances to obstacles can be measured, which are located in the environment of the motor vehicle. Such a device is also referred to in the art as a "parking aid".
An ultrasonic sensor is known to emit ultrasonic waves as transmission signals and receives reflected ultrasonic waves, ie at least a portion of the waves emitted and reflected in the environment. For emitting and receiving the ultrasonic waves, a membrane - typically made of aluminum - is used, which is excited by means of a piezoelectric element to a mechanical vibration. Upon receiving the reflected ultrasonic waves, the piezoelectric element provides an electrical reception signal - an electrical voltage - which is then evaluated with regard to the distances. If target echoes are detected in the received signal, then the distance to the obstacle can be determined from the transit time of the signal.
For operating an ultrasonic sensor system, an electrical supply voltage from the vehicle electrical system of the motor vehicle is usually used. The ultrasonic sensor system is thus supplied with the electrical system voltage or with electrical voltage which is provided by a vehicle battery and / or a generator. This supply voltage is supplied to the control unit, which controls the ultrasonic sensors using this supply voltage. The operation of the ultrasonic sensor system is guaranteed only as long as the supply voltage is above a certain threshold. If this value is undershot, the ultrasonic sensor system is reset or a reset is carried out, which leads to a loss of configuration data and thus to a "blindness" of the sensors as well as a reconfiguration of the entire system. This reconfiguration takes a relatively long time. Since ultrasound sensors are now increasingly used outside of the actual parking assistance functionality, such as for driving support with active brake interventions due to a detected risk of collision, such a system reset should be prevented as possible to avoid a dead time of the system and thus a temporary blindness of the sensors.
A particular challenge in ultrasound sensor systems is the standard start / stop functionality of the vehicles, in which the engine is stopped in stance phases of the vehicle, for example at a traffic light stop, and then restarted. When starting up, the engine is thus automatically switched on again. This switching causes a collapse of the vehicle electrical system voltage and consequently a dip in the supply voltage of the ultrasonic sensor system. Under certain circumstances, these voltage dips can lead to a reset of the ultrasound sensor system and thus to a temporary blindness of the sensors, which proves to be particularly disadvantageous at the time the vehicle starts up, since in this case a particularly rapid detection of possible pedestrians or other obstacles for reliable operation of the automatic brake assist system is essential. Especially when starting the vehicle, the full functionality of the ultrasonic sensor system should be ensured.
It is an object of the invention to provide a solution as in a method of the type mentioned a temporary unavailability of the ultrasonic sensor system, especially when starting the motor vehicle or when starting an engine of the motor vehicle, can be reliably prevented.
This object is achieved by a method as well as by an ultrasonic sensor system with the features according to the respective independent claims. Advantageous embodiments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims, the description and the figure.
An inventive method is used to operate an ultrasonic sensor system of a motor vehicle, in particular a passenger car. In the method, the ultrasonic sensor system is electrically supplied with an electrical supply voltage of a vehicle electrical system of the motor vehicle. In a normal operation of the ultrasonic sensor system For example, a plurality of ultrasonic sensors for emitting respective transmission signals are controlled by a control unit of the ultrasonic sensor system. The transmission signals are generated using the supply voltage. According to the invention, an imminent collapse of the supply voltage is detected by the control unit and due to this detection the ultrasound sensor system is switched from the normal operating mode into a power-saving mode, which has a lower electrical power consumption by the ultrasonic sensor system than the normal operating mode.
According to the invention, the control unit is thus designed to detect a possible break in the supply voltage in advance. Thus, appropriate security measures can be taken early, even before the voltage dip actually occurs. Namely, the ultrasonic sensor system is switched to a power saving mode in which the ultrasonic power system does not consume the full electric power as in the operation mode, but a lower power than the operation mode, particularly with respect to a reference time interval such as the power saving mode duration. Such a power-saving mode can be prevented in a collapse of the supply voltage - in particular when starting the engine - that the height of the supply voltage falls below a limit, at which a reset of the ultrasonic sensor system would have to be performed. So it is prevented altogether that the supply voltage can break so far that the ultrasonic sensor system is reset. Thus, overall a temporary unavailability of the ultrasonic sensor system or a temporary blindness of the ultrasonic sensors can be prevented, which proves to be particularly advantageous in an ultrasonic sensor system, which is designed as an automatic brake assist system and supports the driver by appropriate braking interventions after detection of an obstacle. The inventive method proves to be particularly advantageous in particular in the so-called start-stop system, in which the engine is restarted each time the vehicle is started and the vehicle electrical system voltage thus breaks in relatively frequently. These burglaries are detected early by the control unit of the ultrasonic sensor system and thus the ultrasound sensor system is thus switched early into the energy-saving mode, in which it is ensured that the supply voltage does not fall below the above-mentioned limit value. A limitation of the operation of the ultrasonic sensor system possibly occurring in the energy-saving mode can be accepted or accepted as long as the ultrasound sensor system remains active overall and can be fully utilized again at the time the vehicle starts up, without having to reconfigure due to a reset ,
In one embodiment it can be provided that the collapse of the supply voltage is detected by the control unit of the ultrasonic sensor system when starting an engine, in particular an internal combustion engine, of the motor vehicle. For the starting of the engine namely the electrical system voltage is used, resulting in a temporary voltage dip in the electrical system and thus to a collapse of the supply voltage of the ultrasonic sensor system. This voltage drop is now detected by the control unit in advance - for example, based on an early transmitted message on a communication bus - and switched the ultrasonic sensor system as a result of this detection in the energy saving mode. In particular, it can be provided that the collapse of the supply voltage is detected by the control unit when starting the engine by means of a start / stop system of the motor vehicle. In such an automatic start / stop system, the engine is switched off in standstill phases of the vehicle-for example, at a traffic light stop-and automatically switched on again when starting up. This switching causes a collapse of the vehicle electrical system voltage and consequently a dip in the supply voltage of the ultrasonic sensor system. Since, in particular, on urban roads the engine is turned off relatively frequently by means of the automatic start / stop system and put back into operation, a frequent reset of the ultrasonic sensor system can be prevented here.
With regard to the detection of the imminent collapse of the supply voltage, fundamentally different embodiments can be provided. In one embodiment it is provided that the detection of the imminent break in the supply voltage comprises, by the control unit, information about the imminent intrusion on a communication bus - for example the CAN bus - The motor vehicle is tapped. This embodiment takes advantage of the fact that in most motor vehicles which have the start-stop system, the information about the imminent startup of the internal combustion engine and thus about the imminent voltage dip in advance on the communication bus is provided, namely usually about 50 to 60 ms in advance. This information can now be tapped by the control unit of the ultrasonic sensor system and interpreted to the effect that the supply voltage will soon break. The energy saving mode can thus be in Be activated in advance, so that when the supply voltage breaks in the ultrasonic sensor system already consumes a reduced power. As a result, an excessive voltage drop and thus a reset of the ultrasonic sensor system is prevented.
Additionally or alternatively, the height of the supply voltage can be detected and evaluated by the controller to detect the impending break in the supply voltage. The detection of the imminent break in the supply voltage can therefore be based on the supply voltage itself. Here, the control unit can monitor, for example, the time course of the supply voltage. If the supply voltage deviates by a predetermined value from a nominal voltage, it is thus possible to deduce an imminent voltage dip. Thus, a voltage dip can be detected even if no connection to the communication bus is possible or the above information is not available on the communication bus.
In the energy-saving mode, different measures can be taken, by which the power consumption is reduced and thus altogether prevented that the supply voltage falls below the limit value at which the ultrasonic sensor system would be reset:
In one embodiment it is provided that in the energy-saving mode at most only one of the ultrasound sensors is actuated for transmitting the respective transmission signal. This means that the ultrasonic sensors can only individually transmit the respective transmission signals. The power consumption can thus be significantly reduced compared to the normal operating mode, and a reset of the ultrasonic sensor system can be prevented.
In an advantageous manner, the transmission signals in the energy-saving mode can also be generated with a shorter pulse length than the operating mode. As a result, the power consumption of the ultrasonic sensor system can be reduced as compared to the normal operating mode, thereby preventing a reset of the ultrasonic sensor system.
It proves to be advantageous if in the energy-saving mode, the transmission signals are generated with a pulse length which is less than 1 ms, in particular less than 0.5 ms. For example, the pulse length of the transmission signals may each be 0.3 ms or 0.4 ms. Although the range of the ultrasonic sensors is thus reduced in comparison to the operating mode, an excessive voltage drop and thus a reset of the ultrasonic sensor system can be reliably prevented by such a particularly short pulse length. The distances can thus be reliably detected even in energy-saving mode, so that the ultrasonic sensor system remains functional even in the energy-saving mode, albeit with a smaller range.
The transmission signals can be generated in the energy-saving mode with a pulse length which, in comparison with the pulse length in the operating mode, is smaller by a factor which is greater than 3, in particular greater than 5. This factor can be, for example, 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 or 10. In the operating mode, the pulse length is usually about 2.5 ms. In contrast, the pulse length can be reduced in the power saving mode, for example, to 0.3 ms. For the transmission of a single transmission pulse, the power consumption in the energy-saving mode is thus reduced by a factor of approximately 8 compared to the normal operating mode.
In order to reduce the probability of a reset of the ultrasonic sensor system to a minimum, it can also be provided that in the energy-saving mode, the level of the supply voltage is detected and monitored by the control unit and compared with a predetermined limit at which a reset of the ultrasonic sensor system usually occurs. The ultrasonic sensors can then be controlled by the control unit so that the height of the supply voltage always remains above the predetermined limit. If, for example, it is detected by the control unit that the supply voltage is very close to the limit value, it may be possible to dispense with a measurement with the ultrasonic sensors. Although the distances are thus not detected for a short time, however, after an end of the voltage dip, a new measurement can be carried out very quickly, without having to reconfigure the ultrasonic sensor system. The mentioned limit value can be, for example, in a value range from 5 V to 6 V.
In one embodiment, it is provided that the supply voltage is applied to an electrical energy storage, such as a buffer capacitor. The transmission signals can then be generated in the energy-saving mode using the electrical energy stored in the energy store. The energy store is preferably arranged in the control unit itself, so that the use of such energy storage in the individual ultrasonic sensors with the associated disadvantages in terms of cost and space is unnecessary. Such an energy storage device has the advantage that the ultrasound sensors also have a reduced energy-saving mode Power consumption can be operated without the supply voltage falls below the above limit.
In the energy-saving mode, the transmission signals from at least two of the ultrasonic sensors are preferably generated from the same energy store using the electrical energy. This means that at least two of the ultrasonic sensors, in particular also all ultrasonic sensors, are electrically connected to the common energy store. The number of energy storage can thus be reduced to a minimum. In this case, this energy store preferably has an electrical capacitance which allows the ultrasonic sensors to be actuated individually and thus one after the other for the purpose of transmitting the respective transmission signals, without the above-mentioned limit value of the supply voltage being undershot. Since the transmission pulses, as already stated, can also be particularly short in the energy-saving mode, a relatively small energy store can thus be used.
Preferably, an end of the break in the supply voltage is detected by the control unit. If this end of the voltage dip is detected, the ultrasonic sensor system is switched back from the energy-saving mode to the operating mode. The ultrasonic sensors can thus be operated at full power again, without reconfiguration of the system is required. After the end of the voltage dip, the ultrasonic sensor system is thus immediately fully functional.
Also with respect to the detection of the end of the voltage dip, different embodiments may be provided:
The controller may detect an elapsed time since the detection of the impending intrusion, particularly since the above-mentioned information was picked up on the communication bus, and compare it with a stored reference value to detect the end of the voltage dip. This can be implemented, for example, with a counter, which is started by the control unit in the detection of the impending burglary and then compared with the reference value. The end of the intrusion is considered detected when the elapsed time reaches the stored reference value. This embodiment takes advantage of the fact that the voltage dips have a defined, predetermined period of time. If the burglary itself detected, it can be determined without much effort, when the voltage dip is terminated.
Additionally or alternatively, the detection of the end of the voltage dip can also be based on the amount of the supply voltage. If the broken supply voltage returns to a certain value - about 9 V or 10 V -, the ultrasonic sensor system can be operated at full power again, without having to worry about a reset of the system.
The ultrasonic sensors are usually designed so that they generate error data when an undervoltage occurs when transmitting a transmission signal and transmit it to the control unit, by which the undervoltage occurred has been signaled to the control unit. If the ultrasonic sensor system is operated in energy-saving mode, a lower voltage is used in comparison to the operating mode for generating the transmission signals. In order to prevent false error messages, by which the driver of the motor vehicle would be unnecessarily irritated, it can be provided that the error data generated in the energy saving mode with respect to the undervoltage discarded by the controller or interpreted in a different way than the faulty way. Error data with respect to the undervoltage are thus not taken into account by the control unit in the energy-saving mode and thus do not lead to the output of error messages to the driver. In contrast, so-called reset errors are continuously monitored and taken into account, which are transmitted to the control unit in the event of a reset of an ultrasonic sensor. In this case, the sensor loses all configuration data and therefore has to be reconfigured.
