Abstract
Description
The invention relates to emulsions of perfluorocarbon compounds in water. For example, the perfluorocarbon emulsions can be used to improve the oxygenation of human skin and tissue, particularly wound tissue.
Perfluorocarbon compounds can dissolve large quantities of oxygen and other therapeutically active gases. They are already used to transfer oxygen for cosmetic or medical therapeutic purposes in the skin or wound tissue. In order to bring perfluorocarbon compounds into a topically applicable form, they are generally processed using emulsifiers with relatively great effort to aqueous emulsions. The binding of the perfluorocarbon compounds in the form of very small droplets in aqueous emulsions improves their applicability in local applications. In addition, the emulsified perfluorocarbon compounds can be used in admixture with other components which support or supplement their action.
A disadvantage of such emulsions is that they are not permanently stable so that segregation processes associated with the growth of drops occur over weeks or months. It is therefore proposed to improve the storage stability of the emulsions by using complex mixtures of emulsifiers or mixtures of different fluorocarbon compounds.

The aim of the invention is therefore an improved stability of perfluorocarbon emulsions and a reduction of the effort for the preparation of such emulsions.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the perfluorocarbon emulsion having the features of claim 1. Further specific or preferred embodiments of the present invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
Surprisingly, it has been found that polyelectrolytes can be advantageously used as emulsifiers for the production of perfluorocarbon emulsions. This is particularly surprising because, according to the invention, highly hydrophilic polyelectrolytes can also be used as emulsifiers for the preparation of perfluorocarbon emulsions. These are not compounds with hydrophilic and lipophilic components, such as the surfactants conventionally used as emulsifiers. Polyelectrolytes are water soluble long chain compounds (polymers) bearing anionic (polyacids) or cationic (polybases) dissociable groups. These may be, for example, acrylamide copolymers, alginates, ligninsulfonates, pectins, polyacrylic acids and corresponding copolymers, polyvinylsulfuric acid, polycarboxylic acids, polyphosphoric acids, polysaccharides, aminopolysiloxanes, polystyrenesulfonate, phenols, poly-diallyldimethylammonium chloride, polyethylenimine, polyvinylamine, polyvinylpyridine and polyvinylammonium chloride. However, natural products or modified natural products such as chitosan are also advantageously usable. In the known perfluorocarbon emulsions, such materials are sometimes used to increase the viscosity. A use as an emulsifier has not yet been described.
The emulsion according to the invention may advantageously be used in admixture with already known skin-care or wound-healing-promoting components for improving the oxygen supply of human tissue, in particular the skin or wound tissue. For example, components which are natural components of the skin or largely correspond to them are suitable. These may be skin lipids, such as triglycerides, squalane, ceramides, phospholipids, cholesterol or phytosterols. Another advantage is the addition of components that cause dilation of blood vessels and thus increased blood flow to the tissue. This can be L-arginine, for example.
To 0.33 g of perfluorodecalin is added 0.08 g of a 10% aqueous solution of polyacrylic acid and 2.38 g of water. The biphasic mixture is sonicated by an ultrasonic sonotrode. In a few seconds, a complete perfluorodecalin dipergation occurs. The perfluorodecalin emulsion thus prepared is suitable for improving the oxygenation of skin or wound tissue.
