Zum Einen besteht die Möglichkeit, die Elektrofahrzeuge an sogenannten Stromtankstellen mittels einer Schnellladung mit Gleichstrom aufzuladen, wozu aufgrund der hohen Stromstärken Ladekabel mit sehr großem Durchmesser eingesetzt werden müssen. Eine andere Möglichkeit zur Aufladung dieser Elektrofahrzeuge besteht darin, diese an übliche Steckdosen eines Niederspannungs-Wechselstromnetzes anzuschließen, wie sie in jedem Haushalt, jedoch auch in vielen Garagen oder Carports vorzufinden sind.
