A corresponding level gauge is offered and sold by the applicant under the name Levelflex FMP40.
A measuring principle from a variety of measurement methods to determine the level in a container is that of the guided microwave or the TDR measurement method (Time Domain Reflection). In the TDR measurement method z. B. emitted a high-frequency signal along a summer field surface waveguide or coaxial waveguide, which is partially reflected back at a jump in the DK value (dielectric constant) of the medium surrounding the surface waveguide. From the time difference between the transmission of the transmitted pulse and the reception of the reflected echo signal can be determined over the term of the level. The so-called FMCW method is also feasible in the context of the waveguides described above (surface waveguide or coaxial waveguide).
Fundamental to the two methods is that a rod or rope-shaped surface waveguide protrudes into the medium via an opening in the container, usually through a nozzle, and it is important for the reproducibility and accuracy of the measurement that the rod-shaped or rope-shaped surface waveguide to the inner wall the container, neck or to a Koaxialaußenleiter is aligned and centered. The latter is necessary because in vessels in turbulence and currents in the medium of the rod or rope-shaped surface waveguide can be pressed from its desired, preferably vertical position, whereby the position of the rod or rope-shaped surface waveguide to the inner wall of the container, Stutzens or to a Koaxialaußenleiters is changed. Furthermore, a change in position of the rod or cable-shaped surface waveguide due to vibrations in the entire system and resonant vibrations is a reason for a disturbed measurement with the guided microwave technique. These vibrations can z. B. of various devices on the container z. As motors, pumps are generated.
A disadvantage of an uncontrolled change in position of the surface waveguide is that due to the measurement situation in the tank is changed and the measurement results are no longer comparable. If the rod-shaped or rope-shaped surface waveguide touches even the inner wall of the container, the nozzle or a Koaxialaußenleiters a determination of the level is no longer possible. Even with strongly moving media, the z. B. caused by Befüllvorgänge, ventilation processes or agitators, it may be that this movement of the medium transmits to the rod or rope-shaped surface waveguide and this moves the surface waveguide from its mostly vertical position. This measurement situation would not yield reproducible measurements. If the rod or rope-shaped surface waveguide touches the inner wall of the container, the nozzle or the Koaxialaußenleiters, a determination of the level is no longer possible because of an electrical short circuit. Another problem that arises with the forces acting on the surface waveguide is that the applied forces represent a large mechanical stress on the surface waveguide that can destroy the rod-shaped or rope-shaped probe. These large loads of surface waveguide occur especially by forces from cyclic movements or vibrations of the surface waveguide.
For these reasons, spacers holding the rod-shaped surface waveguide in its vertical position with respect to the inner wall of the container, neck, or coaxial outer conductor are mounted. These should fix the surface waveguide in the desired position.

According to the state of the art, mainly chemically resistant materials with a low DK value or a similar DK value as air (∈ r ≅ 1) are used for the measuring principle of the guided microwave as materials for the centering elements, because every Change causes a reflection of the emitted high-frequency signal. The larger the DK value difference at this point, the more energy of the emitted high-frequency signal is reflected back there. Thus, the following problem may arise: Is the effective DK jump, caused by the centering element on the surface waveguide, almost equal to or greater than the difference of the DK value of the measured phase boundary (eg, air ε r ≈ 1 to the medium ε r ≈ 1.4-100), no measuring signal can be determined at the position where the centering element is located. In these cases, no exact level can be determined at this position. As a result, for example, as materials for the centering generally special plastics or a plastic mixture is used, since these usually have a low DK value. An example of this is the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, Teflon) or perfluoroalkoxy copolymer (PFA) plastics, which are considered suitable for this application, as they are not attacked by solvents or other aggressive chemicals, and by the food and chemical industry as process materials are generally accepted. A disadvantage can be seen, for example, in the fact that polytetrafluoroethylene and perfluoroalkoxy polymers are only permanently heat resistant up to + 250 ° C., which fundamentally excludes these materials from a high-temperature application. For this reason, for example, a material that can withstand higher temperatures must be used for a high-temperature application. As materials for this special application as a spacer or centering but only a few materials are used. However, these materials, which can be used, for example, in the high temperature range, usually have the disadvantage of having a high DK value, which makes it difficult to use and use this material as a centering element on a rod-shaped or rope-shaped TDR measuring probe.
The invention is therefore based on the object to propose a rod-shaped or rope-shaped probe for guided electromagnetic waves, which is characterized by an optimized characteristic impedance adjustment.
This object is achieved according to a first embodiment of the invention in that the centering element is formed as a disc-shaped element and consists of a material having a predetermined dielectric constant and that at least at a position at which the disc-shaped centering is placed on the surface waveguide at least one Recess is provided that the surface waveguide has an undercut at the position of the recess, and that the disc-shaped centering element surrounds the surface waveguide at the position of the recess. Due to the recess (s) on the surface waveguide, the wave resistance of the surface waveguide at this point, where the recess (s) are located, increases depending on the size of the recess (s). With the effect of increasing the characteristic impedance through the recess (s), one can thus obtain the effect of reducing the surface acoustic wave resistance of the waveguide by an attached centering element on the surface waveguide of a material having a higher DK value compensate. The materials which can be used in high-temperature applications essentially have a dielectric constant of ε r > 2.5 (for example ceramics: ε r ≈ 5-10). For these materials with an increased DK value of ε r > 2.5, a compensation or equalization of the characteristic impedance of the surface waveguide, as described above, to perform. The dimensioning of the recess (s) depends on the shape and the DK value of the centering element, ie the higher the DK value of the material of the centering element and the more cross sectional area the centering element between the surface waveguide and the tubular structure fills, the larger it must be / The recesses / -en must be designed. With this method, the characteristic impedance of the waveguide can be adjusted.
The electric field is greatest at the surface of the surface waveguide and decreases reciprocally with the distance. For this reason described above, in the vicinity of the surface waveguide, the effect of the centering element on the characteristic impedance of the waveguide is greatest.
As a result, in this solution of the problem, the principle has been implemented to minimize the area or the volume that fills the centering between surface waveguide and tubular structure, given a DK value of the material. The materials which can be used in high-temperature applications essentially have a dielectric constant of ε r > 2.5 (eg ceramics ε r ≈ 5-10). For these materials with an increased DK value of ε r > 2.5, it is necessary to minimize the disturbance volume, which influences the characteristic impedance of the surface waveguide and thereby causes unwanted reflections of the emitted signal. In addition, for the reasons described above, it is particularly advantageous to minimize the area or volume fractions that are in the vicinity of the surface waveguide. It is important to note the following constraint in minimizing the disturbance volume, that the mechanical stability of the centering is guaranteed at all times.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the first solution of the invention it is provided that the recess (s) on the surface waveguide is / are such that with fixed-m / n centering element (s) on the surface waveguide, the characteristic impedance along a waveguide substantially is constant. In the best case, the characteristic impedance should correspond to the characteristic impedance of the undisturbed waveguide in the region in which the centering element is fastened to the surface waveguide. As a result, reflections of the transmission signal at the position at which the centering sits, reduced or even avoided.
In a further preferred embodiment of the first solution of the invention, it is provided that the recess (s) on the surface waveguide is at least one hole. There are all embodiments of holes z. B. blind hole bores and / or through holes, applicable. The bores are preferably mounted so that they pass through the surface waveguide preferably perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the surface waveguide and the center, but in a specific application, the holes can also be made at any angle to the longitudinal axis of the surface waveguide. The size of the hole is selected by the optimum of the characteristic impedance adjustment taking into account the mechanical stability of the pierced surface waveguide. Any type of mounting aid for the centering element, such as threads, grooves, fits and cones, may be incorporated into the bores.
An expedient embodiment of the first solution of the invention is that the centering element is at least one cylindrical pin, which is / are introduced into the bore (s) on the surface waveguide. The pins are made to fit and are inserted into the holes. In blind holes but also in through holes, it is possible to introduce the pins with a spring mechanism in the holes, which presses the pins to the outside of the inner wall of the tubular structure. Thus, variances in the diameter of the tubular structure could be compensated, whereby a fit accuracy is ensured. The pins can be fastened in different ways in the holes, for example, by gluing the pins into the holes, clamped, soldered, screwed through a thread or fixed with a fastener.
In a further preferred embodiment of the first embodiment of the invention, the recess on the surface waveguide is a taper of the surface waveguide. The taper of the surface waveguide is in the simplest case, a concentric recess of the surface waveguide, but other surface-shaped tapers are provided on the surface waveguide, which in turn prevent rotation of the centering on the surface waveguide. For this purpose, surface-shaped tapers in a square, hexagonal or polygonal profile can be worked out on the surface waveguide. The recesses on the surface waveguide are designed such that an optimum between the mechanical stability and the adaptation of the characteristic impedance of the surface waveguide is achieved, ie the depth of the recesses results from the shape of the centering element and its DK value and is limited only by the above-mentioned mechanical stability of the surface waveguide.
An advantageous embodiment of the first and second embodiment of the solution according to the invention can be seen in that the centering element consists of a disc-shaped element with recesses. Under a disc-shaped element is any, three-dimensional, geometric body understood, whose one dimension z. B. the height is less than the two remaining dimensions z. B. length and width. The height or thickness of the disc-shaped element is seen in the simplest case over the entire base the same, so that there are parallel surfaces. However, this is not mandatory, so that z. B. the centering element, seen over the base, has different heights or thicknesses, d. H. the centering element has different heights at different points. Particularly advantageous is the reduction of the height of the centering element to the surface waveguide, since this brings two advantages. A first advantage is that the medium can flow better, and the further advantage is the minimization of the volume located near the surface waveguide. The latter is particularly advantageous if an adaptation of the characteristic impedance, with or without a recess on the surface waveguide, due to the mechanical requirements of the centering element, can not be realized with a centering element with parallel planar surfaces.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the two variants of the solution according to the invention it is provided that the centering element consists of several sections which are detachably connected to each other. Due to the taper of the surface waveguide and the mounting of the centering at the location of the taper of the surface waveguide, the centering must be divisible because the surface waveguide at the location of the recess has an undercut and the centering surrounds the surface waveguide at the location of the recess. The centering element can be composed of any number of sections. Furthermore, it is possible to provide these sections with an adjustment and fastening element, so that the sections can no longer be reversed or incorrectly mounted. The sections are held together using these Justage- and fasteners. The Justage- and fastener can be achieved by a particular configuration of the sections by z. As small pins or guides or the like on the one portion of the centering and corresponding to the other portion of the centering equivalent adjustment and fastener are worked out, which are arranged to fit each other.
A further advantageous embodiment of the device according to the first solution of the invention is to be seen in that the centering element surrounds the surface waveguide flush in the region of the recess. The flush connection of the centering element around the recess of the surface waveguide ensures that the characteristic impedance of the waveguide does not change at this point. This makes it possible to prevent an undefined air gap between centering element and surface waveguide from influencing the adaptation of the characteristic impedance and changing it. In addition, no medium can enter into a possible air gap and settle in it.
An advantageous embodiment of both variants of the solution according to the invention suggests that the sections of the centering element are symmetrical. If the sections are designed symmetrically, this has the advantage that only one equal part must be made.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the first and second variant of the solution according to the invention it is proposed that the surface waveguide is designed to be divisible at the position of the recess. Another possibility, the disk-shaped centering z. B. to install with a smaller center hole diameter than the outer diameter of the surface waveguide at the position of the recess is to divide the surface waveguide divisibly at this point. The division of the surface waveguide can be done via a screw thread by z. B. in a part of the surface waveguide, a threaded bore is introduced into which a threaded bolt of the other portion of the surface waveguide, which adjoins the region of the recess, is screwed. If the surface waveguide is designed to be divisible, a complete centering element can be placed on the surface waveguide before the surface waveguide is screwed together. Other fasteners, such as a bayonet lock or press fit, are also applicable in this embodiment.
Halteelementen anwendbar.A very advantageous variant of the two solutions according to the invention can be seen in that at least one holding element is provided, which fixes the centering element on the rod-shaped or rope-shaped surface waveguide. The holding element is used for radial and / or axial fixation of the centering element on the surface waveguide. In the case of a split centering, these sections are held together by the holding element. These holding elements can be pins, cotter pins, screws, clamps, springs or rings, which are attached to the surface waveguide and / or the centering element and fix the centering element on the surface waveguide. There are also other embodiments of holding elements and combinations of holding mechanisms or holding elements applicable.
- High mechanical stability,
- - high chemical resistance,
- High temperature resistance,
- - least runtime shift, and
- - low reflection of the high frequency signal
For the centering elements materials must be used, which are due to their low conductivity approximately in the range of electrical insulators to settle. However, some conductivity of the material may be desirable for safety in potentially explosive atmospheres so that the material does not become electrostatically charged and thus there is no spark. Some plastics and engineering ceramics also have good chemical, corrosive and mechanical stability. The plastics polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, Teflon) or perfluoroalkoxy copolymer (PFA) are ideally suited for use as spacers or centering elements, since they are inert against solvents and aggressive chemicals and are therefore generally accepted by the food and chemical industry as a process material , However, the material class of plastics and in general the plastics listed above are only conditionally applicable in high-temperature applications. As a result, as materials of the centering elements for high-temperature applications essentially only technical ceramics or mixtures with a ceramic component can be used, as these additionally cover the specifications of high-temperature applications. However, these ceramics or mixtures have a high DK value (ε r ≈ 5-10), which causes strong reflections on the non-aligned surface waveguide with fixed centering. In principle, a large number of technical ceramics can be used for this type of application. Examples of usable technical ceramics are aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) and zirconium oxide (ZrO 2 ). Another requirement of the material is that the transit time shift of the high-frequency signal due to the attached centering element is minimized, whereby the accuracy of the measurement is improved. The centering element can also be made of other materials that meet the above-mentioned specifications.
An advantageous embodiment of both inventive variants is that it is in the tubular structure to a. Neck on the container acts and that the centering serves as a spacer of the surface waveguide to the inner wall of the nozzle. The centering performs the task of holding the surface waveguide in the middle of the nozzle and to protect the surface waveguide from movements in the nozzle. The free movement of the surface waveguide in the nozzle causes two problems: The first problem is the mechanical stress of the surface waveguide by the forces acting on it; the second problem is the short circuit of the surface waveguide with the inner wall of the nozzle. In addition, for example, cause damage to the surface waveguide, which lead to the rupture of the probe when this z. B. rubs due to the movement of the edge of the nozzle to the container interior.
An advantageous embodiment of both solutions according to the invention is that the tubular structure is a coaxial outer conductor which forms a coaxial conductor system or a waveguide together with the rod-shaped surface waveguide and that the centering element serves as a spacer of the surface waveguide to the inner wall of Koaxialaußenleiters. The centering element in turn has the task of fixing the surface waveguide in the middle of the tubular coaxial outer conductor and to avoid movements of the surface waveguide in Koaxialaußenleiter. In this way, first of all, the measurement situation of the coaxial conductor system is kept constant, since it does not contact the inner wall of the coaxial outer conductor, and secondly, the surface waveguide is not stressed too much by the forces acting on it.
A particularly advantageous solution according to the invention proposes the use of the centering element as a fastening means of a rod or rope-shaped surface waveguide of a field device, which is used to determine the level of a medium in a container by electromagnetic waves are guided over the surface waveguide, which are reflected at the medium surface wherein the surface waveguide protrudes into the interior of a container, and wherein at least one fastening element is provided, whose one end region with the Centering element is connected, which in turn encloses the surface waveguide, and whose other end portion is fixed to the inner wall of the container. The centering element can be used with an additional fastening element as a one-sided mounting of the surface waveguide on the inner wall of the container or nozzle. In this case, the fastener is fixedly mounted to the inner wall via a screw, riveting, welding, gluing or other method of attachment.
