Description
Pesticides It is known that halogenated ethers which still have at least 1 hydrogen atom in the alpha position to the oxygen atom can be used as pesticides (cf. British patent 609 486, French patent 921 546). It has been shown, however, that these substances are unsatisfactory as insecticides, since they have a relatively high toxicity towards warm-blooded animals and, moreover, exert an irritating effect on the skin that is beyond what is tolerable. Furthermore, these halogenated ethers are very unstable and decompose in the presence of water at 20 ° in a very short time (Helv. Chim. A., 25, p. 860), whereby compounds are formed whose irritant effect on warm-blooded animals is considerably higher than that of the undecomposed compounds.
It has now been found that pesticides which contain aliphatic ethers which are completely halogenated in the alpha position to the oxygen atom have a significantly lower toxicity towards warm-blooded animals while being considerably more effective against insects. In addition, they do not have any irritating effect on the skin, and they are much more resistant to moisture and alkali than the above-mentioned known halogenated ethers; they are practically not changed even by boiling with water on the reflux condenser for hours. Their toxicity to humans and animals decreases rapidly with increasing chlorine content, while chemical stability increases accordingly. Halogenated ethers of this kind that make up the grouping have at least once, can be obtained from aliphatic ethers, such as diethyl ether, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, etc., by the method of patent application St 6502 IVd / 12o.
The completely halogenated in the alpha position to the oxygen atom Pesticides containing ether act as contact, breath and food poisons and can be used under conditions known per se, of which some are explained in more detail below.
