Pesticides
The invention relates to pesticides which contain 1, 1- bis (halophenyl) -2, 2, 2- trichloroethanols as active substances. The production of these ethanols is described in Austrian Patent No. 194842.
The pesticides according to the invention contain 1,1-bis (halophenyl) -2,2,2-trichloroethanols with the formula
EMI1.1
in which X is a halogen with an atomic weight of not more than 80, dispersed in one of the usual solvents, diluents or carriers for insecticides (with the exception of using water alone.
Trichloromethylcarbinols, which are substituted by a fluorinated aromatic radical, have already been proposed as insecticides, as well as compounds which are formed by splitting off hydrogen halide from substances with the> C (OH) CCL group, products which accordingly also contain at most one phenyl group. Trichloroethanols with two phenyl substituents were previously not known at all and only became accessible through the process described in Austrian patent specification No. 194842.
It has now been found that these new compounds are particularly suitable for combating mites. This was extremely surprising, as DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), which also contains two halophenyl groups, is ineffective against mites, which are not insects, and when using DDT to kill insects, the mite infestation increases if the mites are not controlled in another way at the same time.
The great superiority of the compounds used according to the invention over trichloromethyl carbinols with a phenyl substituent, e.g. 13. The trichloromethylphenylcarbinol and similar compounds listed in German patent specification No. 763246 were clearly established by the inventor in extensive series of tests in which these compounds were found to be ineffective against mites or significantly less effective than those proposed according to the invention.
The 1, 1-bis (halophenyl) -2, 2, 2-trichloroethanols can be used together with diluents, carriers, solvents, wetting agents, dispersants, fungicidal or insecticidal agents as active components in dusts, wettable powders or self-emulsifying concentrates .
Clay, pyrophillite, diatomaceous earth, talc, mesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, calcium silicate or other finely divided solids can be used as solid carriers and diluents. Dispersing agents, wetting agents and / or adhesives can be added. A typical composition: Ines wettable powder is the following: 25 parts by weight of l, l-'Bis (fluorophenyl) -2, 2, 2-trichloroethanol, 72 parts by weight of finely ground, precipitated, hydrated calcium silicate, 2 parts by weight Parts of the sodium

can be applied in the same way.
A useful emulsifiable concentrate consists of 71 parts by weight of methylated naphthalenes,
EMI2.2
1,1-bis (chlorophenyl) -2,2,2-trichloroethanol, 1 part by weight of methylene-bis (diamylphenoxy-oleic acid-phthalic anhydride and 92 parts by weight of clay and diatomaceous earth. This dust was produced against the army worms on bean plants After 3 days a 37% kill was achieved, after 6 days an 87% kill. In contrast, 1,1-bis (chlorophenyl) -2,2-dichloroethanol only resulted in a kill of 3%. This test, among others, proves the surprising effectiveness of the compounds which can be prepared according to the invention against certain insects as well as against mites.
A wide variety of wetting agents can be used. For emulsion concentrates it is usually desirable to use an agent which is soluble in solvents and which serves as an emulsifying, dispersing and wetting agent, such as an alkylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol, alkoxypolyethoxyethanol, alkylthiopolyethoxyethanol or an ethylene oxide condensate with a long-chain fatty acid. Typical ethylene oxide derivatives are made from alkyl phenols such as the following: Octyl phenol. Nonylphenol, dodecylphenol or alkylphenols, which are condensed with formaldehyde, furthermore from tert-dodecyl mercaptan, tert-tetradecyl mercaptan, dodecyl alcohol, tall oil acids, oleic acid, etc.
Alkylbenzenesulfonates, dodecylsulfate, alkylphenoxypolyäthoxyäthylsulfonate od. The like. Can also be used. Suitable dispersants are not only the formaldehyde naphthalene sulfonates mentioned above, but also the lignosulfonates. Other solvents include e.g. also xylene, pine oil, chlorinated hydrocarbons and certain petroleum products are considered.
A wettable powder containing 1,1-bis (4-chlorophenyl) -2,2,2-trichloroethanol was diluted with water to 1: 400 and applied as a spray. The kill achieved in the army worm was 63% after 3 days and 100% after 6 days. Similar tests with dilutions of 1: 800 and 1: 1600 resulted in a kill of 93% after 6 days.
An aqueous spray containing an emulsifiable concentrate of l, l-bis (4-chlorophenyl) -2, 2, 2-trichloroethanol, was tested against the army worm. At dilutions of 1: 400, 1: 800, 1: 1600 and 1: 3200, 100% desoldering was achieved after 6 days.
A preparation made from an emulsifiable concentrate of 1,1-bis (4-chlorophenyl) -2,2,2-trichloroethanol at a dilution of 1: 25600 was sprayed onto foliage infected with Tetranychus bimaculatus. 100% igue kill was achieved. When the experiments were repeated with dilutions of 1: 51200 and 1: 200000, the killing effect was 100% and 83%, respectively.
Tests with regard to the ovicidal activity of the above compound or the analogous fluorine and bromine compounds have also given favorable results. At a dilution of 1: 1600, the kill of the eggs of Tetranychus cimaculatus was 80-97le.
Tests with mixtures of 1,1-bis (halophenyl) trichloroethanols containing several isomers showed an equally high degree of effectiveness against the abovementioned pests and mite eggs.
