Hlavním identifikačním znakem každého vozidla je kompletní výrobní číslo VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) jeho karoserie, resp. podvozku. Číslo VIN není pouze číslem, nýbrž je to sedmnácti místný kód, který má pevnou logickou strukturu a který kromě arabských číslic obsahuje též písmena. Na základě dohody ISO (International Standards Organization) se světo20 vými výrobci vozidel je tento kód jednotně upraven a struktualizován. Podle normy ISO 3779 je číslo VIN zavedeno a užíváno všemi výrobci motorových vozidel aje zajištěno, že svým složením a délkou je lehce odlišitelné od ostatních čísel na vozidle.
