本发明涉及一种无线网络，特别地，但并不唯一地涉及具有以无线方式通信的元件的家用网络。
技术已变得可达到使得家用设备能无线连接的地步，例如置顶盒(STB)，外设，PC等。在RF域中这样的无线技术的例子是例如，蓝牙和802.11。蓝牙技术提供用于简化在设备之中以及在设备和因特网之间通信的一种短距离的RF技术。该802.11提供了一族由IEEE为无线LAN(局域网络)技术开发的技术条件。能够使设备以无线方式通信的一个优点在于不存在物理电缆来连接它们。另一优点在于在单独房间中或不同层的设备能容易地进行通信，只要它们彼此靠近安放。因此，无线LAN应用已成为可行的。
一个LAN应用的例子是一个STB，它用作家庭中每个PC和/或其他数字处理设备到因特网的接入点。所要求的软件和驱动器能在因特网上通过电缆下载到STB。该STB自身使用例如一个802.11协议与PC和/或其他设备通信。为此，该STB使用一个无线接入点，例如一个基于USB的802.11道尔芯片(dongle)插入该STB的一般的USB端中。对于在该STB和该PC，外设和在该家用网络上的其他设备之间的RF通信，该接入点起天线的作用。
一般一个STB是靠近TV显示器监视器放置。这种配置的一个问题在于消费者在家里可以不将该道尔芯片放置在最好的位置。如果该道尔芯片放置在靠近该TV监视器或甚至在该TV监视器之后面，则RF接收将基本上受到妨碍。由于该STB由该网络操作员(电视操作员，或MSO)提供或指定，所以消费者多半请问用于装置的操作员的辅助控制台(help-desk)。维护一个辅助控制台是相对昂贵的工作，以及在该环境中去减小对该辅助控制台调用数的任何措施是十分有关的。因此发明人提出用一个或多个附加特征提供接入点，或道尔芯片，这些附加特征使消费者放置该接入点于合适的地方，例如放置在该TV显示器监视器之顶部，即使它可能是自动进行的。例如一个附加特征是，IR遥控接收机用于控制在该家用网络上的TV和/或其他设备，或者用于同一个无线键盘合作。例如，另一附加特征是，可以在该STB仪表前盖的前面建立一个或多个状态LED(例如，红＝电子邮件等待；黄＝连接的；绿＝加电)。还有一个附加特征是固态静物成像或摄像机用于电视会议。这样给该消费者多个充分的理由将该接入点放置在该TV的顶部，同时得到可靠的802.11通信作为附带优点。

Claims (14)
