Abstract
本发明提供一种显示装置,在电致发光(EL)显示装置中,以适当的对比显示出黑白。其中,在具有用以驱动有机EL元件(120)的驱动电压(PVdd)的EL显示装置中,驱动电压(PVdd)的上限(VH)按照当视频信号(Dm)为黑信号电平(V0)时、使有机EL元件(120)的亮度在第1基准亮度(L1)以下而设定,而驱动电压(PVdd)的下限(VL)按照当所述视频信号(Dm)为白信号电平(V1)时、使有机EL元件(120)的亮度在第2基准亮度(L2)以上而设定。
Description
技术领域
本发明涉及一种显示装置,特别涉及一种在每个显示像素中,具有电致发光元件与薄膜晶体管的电致发光显示装置。
背景技术
近年来,采用电致发光(Electro Luminescence;以下简称“EL”)元件的EL显示装置,作为取代CRT或LCD的显示装置而备受瞩目。特别作为驱动EL元件的开关元件已开发了一种具备薄膜晶体管(ThinFilm Transistor:以下简称“TFT”)的EL显示装置。
图3是表示具备这种EL元件与TFT的EL显示装置的一显示像素的等效电路图。实际的EL显示装置是此种显示像素以矩阵状配置多个从而构成显示区域。
图3是包括有第1TFT100、第2TFT110及有机EL元件120的EL显示装置的等效电路图,其表示在第n行栅极信号线50与第m列漏极信号线60的交叉点附近所形成的一显示像素。
供给栅极信号Gn的栅极信号线50,与供给漏极信号、即视频信号Dm的漏极信号线60相互交叉。在这二个信号线的交叉点附近,配置有机EL元件120、用以驱动该有机EL元件120的TFT100、以及用以选择显示像素的TFT110。
在有机EL元件驱动用的第1TFT100的漏极110d上,连接有驱动电源105,并从此驱动电源105供给正驱动电压PVdd。此外,源极110s连接于有机EL元件120的阴极(阳极)121。
再者,通过栅极信号线50连接于显示像素选择用的第2TFT110的栅极110g,而供给栅极信号Gn,并通过在漏极110d上连接漏极信号线60,而供给视频信号Dm。第2TFT110的源极110s连接于上述第1TFT100的栅极110g。在此,栅极信号Gn是从未图示的栅极驱动电路中输出。视频信号Dm则由未图示的漏极驱动电路中输出。
有机EL元件120是由阴极121、阳极(阴极)122、以及形成于阴极121与阳极122间的发光元件层123所构成。阳极122是连接于供给负共用电压的共用电源140上。
在第1TFT100的栅极100g上连接有保持电容130。换句话说,保持电容130的一方电极是连接于栅极100g,而另一方电极则连接于保持电容电极131上。保持电容130通过保持对应于视频信号Dm的电荷,设置成用于在1场(field)期间中保持显示像素的视频信号。
以下说明上述构造的EL显示装置的动作。栅极信号Gn是若在一水平期间中呈高电平的话,第2TFT110会导通。如此,来自漏极信号线60的视频信号Dm会通过第2TFT110,而施加于第1TFT100的栅极100g。然后,对应供应至栅极100g的视频信号Dm,第1TFT100的电导会变化,且对应于此的驱动电流将从驱动电源105通过第1TFT 100,而供给至有机EL元件120。藉此,控制有机EL元件120的亮度。
如上所述,有机EL元件120的发光亮度是通过对应于视频信号Dm使第1TFT100的电导产生变化而进行控制。但是,针对如何设定驱动电源105所供应的正驱动电压PVdd则尚未被探讨到。因此,将导致无法适当地设定正驱动电压PVdd,且无法充分确保EL显示的对比等不良现象。
发明内容
有鉴于此,本发明的目的在于:着眼于驱动电源105所供应的正驱动电压PVdd,而适当地设定有机EL元件120的亮度。
本发明的EL显示装置具备有多个显示像素,其中,各显示像素包括有:电致发光元件;在源极连接上述电致发光元件的驱动用的第1薄膜晶体管;对上述第1薄膜晶体管的漏极供应驱动电压的驱动电源;以及对漏极供应视频信号,同时对应栅极信号而将上述视频信号供应至上述第1薄膜晶体管的栅极的像素选择用的第2薄膜晶体管;其中,
上述驱动电压的上限按照当上述视频信号呈黑信号电平时、使上述电致发光元件的亮度在第1基准亮度以下而设定,同时上述驱动电压的下限按照当上述视频信号呈白信号电平时、使上述电致发光元件的亮度在第2基准亮度以上而设定。
本发明是着眼于驱动电压、视频信号的白信号电平与黑信号电平、以及电致发光元件的间的关系,而设定驱动电压的上限与下限。所以,借助于将驱动电压设定在上述范围,可适当地执行EL显示装置的白显示与黑显示。

具体实施方式
其次,针对本发明实施方式,参照附图进行详细说明。有关本发明实施方式的EL显示装置的等效电路构造与图3所示相同。在以下说明中,将第1TFT设定为P沟道型,将第2TFT设定为N沟道型。
图1是针对本发明实施方式的EL显示装置中的驱动电压PVdd的设定进行说明的图。从漏极信号线60通过第2TFT110所供应的视频信号Dm,是在白信号电平(V1)与黑信号电平(V0)之间产生变化。黑信号电平(V0)>白信号电平(V1)。
其中,相对于视频信号Dm的黑信号电平(V0),若从栅极信号线50所供应的栅极信号Gn的高电平Gn(H)高至某种程度的话,视频信号Dm将直接依此电平状态供应给第1TFT100的栅极100g。此条件具体而言为Gn(H)≥V0+Vth。其中,Vth是第2TFT110的临限电压(ThresholdVoltage)。但是,此条件并非限制本发明的范围,也可为Gn(H)<V0+Vth。但是,必须Gn(H)≥Vth。
现在,将视频信号Dm设定为黑信号电平(V0)。然后,此黑信号电平(V0)便在Gn(H)≥V0+Vth的情况下,直接施加于第1TFT100的栅极100g。在第1TFT100中流通有对应于此的较小电流,并供应给有机EL元件120。此时,有机EL元件120的亮度必须设定为可辨视黑显示的某种程度的暗。第1TFT100最好完全关断,其亮度为0cd/cm2。
但是,若驱动电压PVdd提高至某种极限以上的话,第1TFT100将导通,且电流将开始流通。如此,有机EL元件120的亮度便将提升,而导致EL显示的对比的恶化。所以,在此情况下,设定有机EL元件120的第1基准亮度L1,并将此亮度变成第1基准亮度L1时的驱动电压PVdd,设定为驱动电压PVdd的上限电压VH。
另外,当Gn(H)<V0+Vth的时,施加于第1TFT100的栅极100g的黑信号电平电压,将降低至Gn(H)-Vth,并以该降低的电压为基准,设定驱动电压PVdd的上限电压VH。
另一方面,将视频信号Dm设定为白信号电平(V1)。然后,此白信号电平(V1)便将施加于第1TFT100的栅极100g,而第1TFT100将导通,且流通有对应于此的较大电流,并供应给有机EL元件120。此时,有机EL元件120的亮度必须设定为可辨视白显示的某种程度的亮。
但是,若驱动电压PVdd降低的话,将随第1TFT100的电流的减少,而使有机EL元件120的亮度降低,仍将造成EL显示对比的恶化。所以,在此情况下,设定有机EL元件120的第2基准亮度L2,并将该亮度变为第2基准亮度L2时的驱动电压PVdd,设定为驱动电压PVdd的下限电压VL。
所以,用以确保EL显示的白与黑对比的驱动电压PVdd的适当设定范围,将成为VL≤PVdd≤VH。
其次,根据本发明者的实验结果,针对驱动电压PVdd的具体设定范围进行说明。图2是驱动电压PVdd与有机EL元件亮度之间的关系图。将从共用电源140对有机EL元件120所供应的负共用电压CV设定为-7V。此外,白信号电平(V1)是设定为1V,黑信号电平(V0)则设定为5V。
如图所示,在黑信号时,有机EL元件将显示较低亮度,而驱动电压PVdd将缓缓地开始上升至7V以上。所以,将第1基准亮度L1、即,EL显示未发光且可辩视黑色的基准线设定为20cd/cm2。另一方面,在白信号时,有机EL元件虽显示较高亮度,但将随PVdd的减少而降低。所以,将第2基准亮度L2、即EL显示发光且可辩视白色的基准线设定为200cd/cm2
依照此种设定,适当的驱动电压PVdd将在5.0V至7.7V范围内。上述第1基准亮度L1、第2基准亮度L2的设定值虽为较佳值,但是并不仅限于此,可配合EL显示装置的规格等而采用其它适当的设定值。此外,有关白信号电平(V1)、黑信号电平(V0)也可适当地变更。
另外,在上述实施例中,虽根据室温下的驱动电压PVdd与有机EL元件亮度间的关系,设定驱动电压PVdd的范围,但是因为有机EL元件的亮度具有温度依存性,因此实际上在考虑其温度变化后,再设定驱动电压PVdd范围较为适当。
另外,在本实施方式中,虽第1TFT100属于P沟道型,而第2TFT110属于N沟道型,但是并不仅限于此,也可第1TFT100属于N沟道型,第2TFT110属于P沟道型。
当驱动用的第1TFT100属于N沟道型时,视频信号Dm的白信号与黑信号电平将相反。换句话说,白信号电平(V0)将低于黑信号电平(V1)。但是,即便此种EL显示装置,本发明同样可适用。
依照本发明,着眼于驱动电压、视频信号的白信号电平与黑信号电平、以及电致发光元件间的关系,而设定驱动电压PVdd的上限VH与下限VL。所以,借助于将驱动电压PVdd设定于根据上限VH与下限VL所限定的范围内,即可在EL显示装置中,以适当的对比进行黑白显示。
Claims (4)
1.一种显示装置,具有多数个显示像素;其中,各显示像素包括有:电致发光元件、在源极与所述电致发光元件连接的驱动用的第1薄膜晶体管、对该第1薄膜晶体管的漏极供应驱动电压的驱动电源、以及像素选择用的第2薄膜晶体管,是对漏极供应视频信号,同时对应栅极信号而将所述视频信号供应至所述第1薄膜晶体管的栅极,其特征为:
所述驱动电压的上限,按照当所述视频信号呈黑信号电平时、使所述电致发光元件的亮度在第1基准亮度以下而设定;同时所述驱动电压的下限,按照当所述视频信号呈白信号电平时、使所述电致发光元件的亮度在第2基准亮度以上而设定。
2.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其特征为,所述第1基准亮度是在20cd/cm2以下。
3.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其特征为,所述第2基准亮度是在200cd/cm2以上。
4.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其特征为,所述第1薄膜晶体管是P沟道型,而所述视频信号的黑信号电平大于所述视频信号的白信号电平。
