Abstract

本申请在要求优先权时根据35 U.S.C.§11(e)引用了Kari Pih1和Hannu Pirila于1999年5月7日提出的临时专利申请60/133,062。本申请在要求优选权时还根据35 U.S.C.§11(e)引用了Kari Pih1和HannuPirila于1999年5月10日提出的临时专利申请60/133,287。本申请包含这两个同时待审的临时专利申请所公开的内容完全是为了参考。
技术领域
本发明主要涉及无线电信系统,更具体地说,涉及在移动终端和无线网络之间产生信号,用来获取移动终端定位信息。
背景技术
利用全球定位系统(GPS)卫星群来获得地面方位定位点(纬度和经度)的方法,已经是众所周知并且得到广泛应用。已经有人建议在现代无线电信系统中,移动终端(比如蜂窝电话,但不限于此)应当具有接收GPS信号的能力,这样就可以推算出它们在地面上的位置。
为了提高与独立GPS相比的推算位置能力,移动终端除了要具有GPS接收机功能外,还要能访问所谓的GPS辅助数据。在一个特定区域内,GPS辅助数据对于所有GPS兼容的移动终端都是相同的。最简便的技术显然是向这个特定区域内的所有GPS兼容移动终端广播(也就是点对多点)GPS辅助数据。辅助数据并不是针对某个移动终端的,但却能被多个GPS兼容移动终端所利用。GPS辅助数据由大量数据(大约500位/卫星)组成,这些数据需要从无线电信系统网络传送到GPS兼容移动终端。GPS辅助数据包含以下元素:(A)多颗卫星(B)基准时间(C)基准位置(正服务基站收发信台(BTS)位置(BTS))(D)卫星ID,天体位置推算表,时钟校正,等等(E)可选的DGPS校正
然而,目前的无线电信协议中,比如全球移动电信系统(或GSM),点对多点的广播信道(比如BCCH,SMSCB)的能力是有限的。因此,在实际中,在目前指定的点对多点广播信道中使用所要求的GPS辅助数据是很难或不可能的。
本发明的目标和优点
本发明的第一个目标和优点是提供了一项改进的信号技术,可以使GPS辅助数据传送到移动终端。
本发明的第二个目标和优点是提供了一项改进的信号技术,可以通过点对点信号协议把GPS辅助数据发送到移动终端上,作为点对多点(广播)协议的替代。
本发明还有一个目标和优点,是和独立GPS相比,当移动终端在无线网络中激活时,改善了它在开电自检阶段性能,并且改善了GPS总的精确度。
发明内容
根据本发明的实施例,通过各种方法和装置可以克服上述问题和其它问题,并实现本发明的各个目标。
本发明讲述了一种方法,就是GPS辅助数据是如何被传送到GPS兼容的移动终端上的。接收这种数据的移动台,再结合接收到的GPS信号,就可以准确地计算它们自己的位置。应用本发明的一个例子是它在全球移动电信系统(GSM)第2阶段中的应用,添加了位置服务(LCS)协议,但是这项重要的应用只不过是本发明众多可以利用的优点中的一项。
发明者已经意识到GPS辅助数据的特性之一是它的寿命相对较长(大约2小时),这项特性可以在网络辅助的移动终端GPS(NAMT-GPS)系统中加以利用。对于这种长寿命的数据,建立点对多点的广播信道是没有必要的,也会浪费系统资源。事实上GPS辅助数据通过点对点信号协议传送到GPS兼容的移动终端是最好的,最好使用已经确定的点对点信号协议和消息类型。GPS辅助数据的长寿命使得无线网络能利用下列示例性GSM过程,将GPS辅助数据从网络传送到移动终端:IMSI(国际移动用户身份码)附加,正常位置更新,定期位置更新。
依照本发明的原理,在向移动终端发送GPS辅助数据时,无须建立或应用点对多点的广播信道。事实上在向GPS兼容的移动终端传送GPS辅助数据时,使用的是点对点的方式,例如已经确定的IMSI附加和位置更新过程。在这种方式中,由于没有为此而要求提供广播信道,网络的负载并不会受到不利影响。
根据本发明,网络辅助的移动终端GPS系统包括多个GPS兼容移动终端,每个终端具有一个收发器,还包括一套无线电信网络,网络中至少拥有一个基站收发器,用来向单个GPS兼容的移动台传输GPS辅助数据,传输过程使用点对点信号协议。此处说明性的具体实施例中,点对点信号协议至少包含一个IMSI(国际移动用户身份)附加,一个正常位置更新或者一个定期位置更新信号协议。

发明详细方案
图1和图2结合起来解释说明适合使用本发明的无线移动终端10(例如,蜂窝无线电话或个人通信器,但不限于此)。移动终端10包括天线12,它用来与基站(BS)或基站收发台30之间收发信号。BS30是无线网络32的一部分,后者通常包括一个移动交换中心(MSC)或者类似的系统,它为移动终端10通话时提供陆线干线连接。在本发明中,网络32或包含或可以访问或能计算GPS辅助数据34。例子中,GPS辅助数据34可以在正服务移动位置中心(SMLC)里被确定下来,SMLC既可以位于网络和交换子系统(NSS),也可以位于基站子系统(BSS)。要实现本发明的功能,GPS辅助数据34始于或位于网络32的哪个部分并不重要。网络32通常包含移动交换中心(MSC)33这个网络组件。
移动终端10是GPS兼容的,因为它要么包含一个GPS接收器23,要么与之相连接,此外还包含一个调制器(MOD)14A,一个传送器14,一个接收器16,一个解调器(DEMOD)16A,还有一个控制器18,控制器是用来分别向传送器14发送或从接收器16接收信号的。这些信号中包括与适用的无线网络或系统的空中接口标准相一致的信号信息,通常还包括用户语音和/或用户数据。本发明假定所使用的空中接口标准具有从网络32向移动终端10点对点传输消息的能力。
控制器18还应包括执行移动终端上语音和逻辑函数所需的电路。例子中,控制器18的组成部分有:一个数字信号处理器装置,一个微处理器设备,各种模数转换器,数模转换器,还有其他必要的电路。根据移动终端上的控制和信号处理函数各自的功能,把它们分配到上述设备中。
用户接口包括一个常规的耳机或扬声器17,一个常规的麦克风19,一个显示屏20,还有一个用户输入设备,它通常是一个键盘22,所有这些都与控制器18连接。键盘22包括通常的数字(0-9)和与之相关的键(#,*)22a,以及其他一些用来操作移动终端10的键22b。移动终端10上通常还有一块电池26来为各个电路供电,维持移动终端的运转。
移动终端10还具有各种存储器,图中集中表示为存储器24。在移动终端使用期间,存储器里存放着控制器(8)要用到的各种常量和变量。例如,存储器24里存储着各种系统参数值及移动终端特有的信息,比如号码指配模组(NAM)。掌握控制器18运行的操作程序也存储在存储器24(通常是ROM设备)里。
根据本发明的描述,存储器24里还有一部分是24A,24A用来存储通过点对点信号协议从网络32接收到的GPS辅助数据,比如在下面的把GPS辅助数据从网络32传送到移动终端10的示例GSM过程中接收GPS辅助数据:IMSI附加,正常位置更新,或定期位置更新。
应该注意的是,IMSI附加、正常位置更新、定期位置更新的最初用途,是当移动台10进入网络、改变位置区或在网络中定期更新存在信息时,用来通知网络32。通常这是针对MSC/VLR完成的,尽管一个MSC/VLR可能包含不止一个位置区。使用的标识码是位置区标识(LAI)。如果由于某些原因移动台10没有以实时方式进行定期位置更新,MSC/VLR将会删除移动台10的注册信息。
根据本发明的描述,当移动台10请求一个信道用于位置更新时,它向网络32请求的是“继续程序”。这意味着如果先执行的是位置更新,那么除非移动台10发出请求,否则MSC33不会关闭该连接。有关这一方面引用的例子有GSM 04.08,第10.5.3.5部分,位置更新类型,以及表10.65/GSM 04.08位置更新类型信息元素,其中指定了继续请求(FOR)位编码。
如果有多个点对点消息需要将GPS辅助数据传递到移动台10,那么由在低层消息协议中建好的消息段程序进行处理。
通过接收诸如IMSI附加等中的移动台级别等信息,以及在呼叫初始化期间,网络32能知道某个特定的移动台10是否是GPS兼容的。例子里,在移动台级别3(参见GSM 04.08,第10.5.1.7部分)中可以了解移动台10的性能,级别3中有几个编码位,用来表明移动台10是否支持移动台辅助的GPS,或基于移动台的GPS,或具有常规的GPS能力。
在示例实施例中,移动终端10包括GPS接收器23。GPS接收器23与存储的GPS辅助数据一起根据从GPS卫星36上接收到的传输内容计算出移动终端10所在的位置。如图2所示,至少还有另一个GPS兼容的移动终端10也通过点对点的传输方式从网络32接收GPS辅助数据。
总之,由于GPS辅助数据相对较大(例如,500位/卫星),再加上GPS辅助数据相对较长的寿命,发明者意识到如果提供点对多点(广播)信道,用以从网络32向GPS兼容移动终端10传输GPS辅助数据,是不现实的或者至少是浪费系统资源的。也就是说,由于GPS辅助数据的长寿命,从网络32向移动终端10传递这种数据时,可以使用诸如普通的IMSI附加和位置更新程序,通过点对点的方式传输。这种方法的好处是网络32的性能不会受到有害的影响,并且不用新建特别的信号管理机制。
本发明克服的困难之一,是对于GPS辅助数据34,不必在移动终端10和网络32之间建立额外的点对点连接,因为利用诸如IMSI附加和位置更新的点对点连接,就能达到同样的最终效果。
本发明的另一个优点是,把GPS辅助数据从网络32向GPS兼容的移动终端10传递时,有可能实现基于网络辅助移动终端的GPS系统,而无需专门指定点对多点的广播信道。
而且,向GPS兼容移动终端10传送的GPS辅助数据也不必做出变动,因为利用IMSI附加和位置更新信号对网络32的点对点连接,提供了传输能满足期望精确度的GPS辅助数据的所有带宽。
现在看图3,其中所示的是根据本发明的一种方法的流程。在步骤A中,移动台10利用附加服务请求GPS辅助数据,附加服务优先使用的是移动台始呼位置请求(MO-LR)。请求是向网络32提出的,比如向移动交换中心(MSC)33这个网络构件提出(参见图1)。在步骤B中,MSC33检验用户业务文档,查看移动台10是否有权接收GPS位置服务。假设检验通过,那么在步骤C中,MSC33请求服务移动位置中心(SMLC)向移动台10传送所请求的GPS辅助数据,本例中假设SMLC是图1中的单元34。在步骤D中,SMLC34利用RRLP协议向移动台10发送GPS辅助数据,然后通知MSC33,说明所请求的GPS辅助数据已经发送完毕。之后MSC33产生必要的帐单报告,并且通知移动台10,声明已经完成了附加服务。
通过继续程序,位置更新请求之后的MO-LR可能用来请求GPS辅助数据,继续程序例如在GSM 04.08中指定。注意,比如在4.4.1部分中的位置更新程序,4.4.2部分中的定期更新和4.4.3部分中的IMSI附加程序,以及前面提到的10.5.3.5部分中的位置更新类型,还有表10.65/GSM 04.08中的位置更新类型信息元素,均为FOR位指定了编码。
要注意的是,对于LCS应用,可以在移动终端里实现本发明,作为基于移动终端的/移动终端辅助的EOTD/GPS位置方法的一部分。
虽然本发明的原理是在特定GSM实施例中说明的,但那些本领域的技术人员应该意识到本发明的原理同样适用于TDMA系统的其他类型,以及多访问系统的其他类型,比如CDMA和宽带CDMA(WCDMA)系统。因此,虽然本发明针对优选实施例进行详细说明和描述,但本领域的技术人员应该清楚,在不超出本发明的范围和宗旨的前提下,可以对其细节和形式进行各种修改。
Claims (6)
1.一个网络辅助的移动终端GPS系统,包括:
多个GPS兼容移动终端,每个包含一个收发器;以及
一个无线电信网络,其中至少包括一个基站收发器,用来向所述多个GPS兼容移动台中的某个传送GPS辅助数据,传送过程使用的是点对点信号协议。
2.根据权利要求1的系统,其中的点对点信号协议至少包含IMSI(国际移动用户身份码)附加,以及正常位置更新或定期位置更新信号协议中的一个。
3.根据权利要求1的系统,其中GPS辅助数据的寿命大于1小时。
4.向移动台提供GPS辅助数据的方法,包括以下的步骤:
由移动台提出对GPS辅助数据的请求;
利用至少一个点对点消息,从无线网络向移动台传送所请求的GPS辅助数据。
5.向移动台提供GPS辅助数据的方法,包括以下步骤:
在位置更新之后,继续请求挂起时,使用移动台始呼位置请求,由移动台提出对GPS辅助数据的请求;
利用继续程序,通过点对点的方式,向移动台传递所请求的GPS辅助数据。
6.根据权利要求5的方法,其中位置更新是IMSI(国际移动用户身份码)附加、正常位置更新、或者定期位置更新中的一种。
