Background
It is well known that many liquid or pourable food products, such as fruit juice, UHT (ultra-high temperature treated) milk, wine, tomato sauce, etc., are sold in composite packages made of multiple layer composite packaging material.
A typical example is a parallelepiped-shaped package for pourable food products called a sterile bag (Tetra Brik Aseptic (registered trademark)), which is made by sealing and folding a laminated sheet packaging material. The packaging material has a multilayer structure comprising a paperboard and/or paper substrate layer covered on both sides with a layer of heat-seal plastic material, for example a polyethylene layer. In the case of aseptic packages for long-storage products, the packaging material also comprises a layer of oxygen-barrier material (for example aluminium foil) superimposed on a layer of heat-seal plastic material, which is then covered in turn by a further layer of heat-seal plastic material forming the inner surface of the package eventually contacting the food product.
Some known composite materials each include:
-a body having a given opening and formed from a sheet of composite packaging material having a multilayer structure; and
-an opening device connected to the body and surrounding the designated opening and configured to seal the designated opening, the opening device being controllable to an open configuration so as to release the designated opening.
A typical opening device comprises: a base frame connecting the opening device to the main body and surrounding the designated opening; a collar extending from the base frame, the collar having an outlet; and a cover for selectively closing and opening the outlet.
It is also known that such composite packages are formed in automatic packaging machines from respective sheets of composite packaging material, which may be provided individually or in the form of a series of rolls of elementary units.

Detailed Description
Numeral 1 generally indicates a first embodiment of a composite package for pourable products (especially pourable food products, even more especially liquid food products), comprising:
a- (composite) body 2 (in particular a sealed (composite) body 2) filled with a pourable product (in particular a pourable food product, even more particularly a liquid food product), and having a designated opening configured to allow the pourable product to flow out of the body 2; and
an opening device 3 (in particular a plastic opening device 3) connected to the body 2 in such a way as to enclose the intended opening and configured to seal the intended opening, in particular before the first use of the package 1.
In particular, the package 1 may be made of a sheet of composite packaging material 4, in particular a sheet of composite packaging material having a multi-layer structure, as disclosed for example in fig. 3.
With particular reference to fig. 1, the package 1 (in particular the body 2) may extend along a longitudinal axis a, a first transversal axis B and a second transversal axis C. In particular, the extension of the package 2 along the longitudinal axis a may be greater than the extension of the package 2 along the first and second lateral axes B, C.
Preferably, the package 1 (in particular the body 2) may be parallelepiped-shaped. Alternatively, the package 1 (in particular the body 2) may have a cylindrical shape or any other shape.
In more detail, the body 2 may comprise a plurality of walls, in particular a first wall 5, one or more side walls 6 (in the specific case shown as four) and at least one second wall 7 (in the specific case shown as one).
More specifically, the first wall 5 may be transverse (in particular perpendicular) to the longitudinal axis a, and the body 2 may extend along the longitudinal axis a from the first wall 5. Preferably, the first wall 5 may define a support surface of the package 1 (in particular of the body 2) designed to be in contact with a support (for example a shelf), in particular in use (for example at point of sale display or at storage). In particular, the first wall 5 defines a bottom wall of the package 1 when arranged on a support.
In addition, during normal use of the package 1, the first wall 5 may define a bottom wall of the package 1.
Furthermore, the side wall 6 may be (fixedly) connected to the first wall 5, in particular extending (substantially) parallel to the longitudinal axis a from the first wall 5. In particular, the side walls 6 (substantially) define an extension of the package 1 along the longitudinal axis a.
In addition, the second wall 7 may be positioned opposite the first wall 5 and may be (fixedly) connected to (at least some of) the side walls 6. In particular, the second wall 7 may also be transverse to the longitudinal axis a.
In particular, the side wall 6 may be interposed between the first wall 5 and the second wall 7.
In particular, the second wall 7 may define a top wall of the body 2 when arranged on a support and/or during normal use of the package 1.
According to some non-limiting embodiments, the first wall 5 and the second wall 7 may be parallel to each other.
According to an alternative non-limiting embodiment, not shown, the first wall portion 5 and the second wall portion 7 may be inclined with respect to each other.
According to a further alternative embodiment, not shown, the second wall 7 may have two portions transverse to each other (i.e. so as to form a roof construction).

In particular, the reference crease line 37 also has a rectilinear shape.
In addition, the first flange 34 (particularly the peripheral portion 35) may include an auxiliary peripheral portion 38, the auxiliary peripheral portion 38 being spaced apart from the linear peripheral portion 36 and facing away from the reference crease line 37. In the particular example shown, the auxiliary peripheral portion 38 has a rectilinear shape, in particular (substantially) parallel to the rectilinear peripheral portion 36. Alternatively, the auxiliary peripheral portion 38 may have a shape different from that of the straight peripheral portion.
Further, the first flange 34 (particularly the outer peripheral portion 35) may include other auxiliary outer peripheral portions 39 connecting the straight outer peripheral portion 36 and the auxiliary outer peripheral portion 38 to each other. In particular, the auxiliary peripheral portion 39, the linear peripheral portion 36 and the auxiliary peripheral portion 38 may define an annular shape.
In more detail, the first flange 34 may include a channel.
Further, the first flange 34 may include an inner portion 40 connected to the outer peripheral portion 35. Specifically, the outer peripheral portion 35 may be disposed radially outside, and the inner portion 40 may be disposed radially inside.
Further, the outer peripheral portion 35 may extend in a first plane, and the inner portion 40 may extend in a second plane displaced from the first plane. In particular, the inner portion 40 (even more particularly the second plane) may be flush with the first face.
Furthermore, the first plane may be flush with the second face 24.
Further, collar 17 is integrally formed with first flange 34 and extends from first flange 34.
According to some possible non-limiting embodiments, the distance between the rectilinear peripheral portion 34 and the reference crease line 37 may be equal to or less than 2.0mm, in particular equal to or less than 1.0mm, even more in particular equal to or less than 0.9mm. Specifically, the distance between the straight peripheral portion 34 and the reference crease line 37 is determined in conjunction with the direction normal to the crease line 37 and the straight peripheral portion 34.
According to some possible embodiments, the rectilinear peripheral portion 36 may be in contact with a reference crease line 37. In particular, the linear peripheral portion 36 may abut the reference crease line 37, or may extend into the reference crease line 37 (i.e., the linear peripheral portion 36 may overlap a portion of the reference crease line 37).
Once package 1 is formed from sheet 21 of packaging material, first flange 34 may be connected to (particularly fused to) inner surface 12 (i.e., first flange 34 is disposed within interior space 11). In addition, the straight peripheral portion 36 may be adjacent to and parallel to the reference crease line 37. In particular, the reference crease lines 37 correspond to and/or define a respective second transverse edge 10.
Furthermore, the straight peripheral portion 36 may be adjacent to one respective side wall 6. In particular, the distance between the rectilinear peripheral portion 36 and the respective side wall 6 may be equal to or less than 2.0mm, in particular equal to or less than 1.0mm, even more in particular equal to or less than 0.9mm.

feeding molten polymer into the mould and moulding the respective opening devices 3 onto the packaging material web substrate 21 and surrounding the designated openings.
In particular, the mould has a cavity corresponding to the shape of the opening device 3.
According to some possible embodiments, in particular in order to increase the accuracy of positioning of opening devices 3, forming sheet 21 of packaging material further comprises the steps of:
reading the indicia applied to the packaging material web substrate 22; and
-aligning the mould around the designated opening according to the position of the mark.
In particular, the label may be a magnetic label or a different kind of label. Preferably, the markers may be magnetic markers to allow for a precise positioning of the mould and thus of the opening device 3.
In more detail, the packaging material sheet base 22 may be provided in the form of a roll. In particular, the web comprises a plurality of elementary units, each elementary unit corresponding to a respective sheet of packaging material base 22. Thereby, during the providing step, the web of packaging material sheet base 22 is advanced (in particular intermittently) to a moulding station, where the opening devices 3 are moulded onto the respective packaging material sheet base 22. In this way, a web of packaging material sheet 21 is obtained.
Further, forming the package 1 comprises the steps of:
-providing a sheet of packaging material 21;
folding the sheet of packaging material 21 according to crease lines 30 to obtain packages 1;
sealing (in particular in the longitudinal and transverse directions) the package 1; and

Furthermore, during the sealing step, the tube may be sealed longitudinally and transversely.
In addition, during the filling step, the tube may be filled with a pourable product.
Forming the package 1 may further comprise a forming step during which the tube is formed, and a step of cutting the tube transversely in order to obtain individual packages 1.
Referring to fig. 4, the numeral 1' indicates an alternative embodiment of a package according to the invention; since the package 1' is similar to the package 1, the following description is limited to only the differences between them and uses the same reference numerals for the same or corresponding parts where possible.
In particular, the package 1 'differs from the package 1 in that it comprises an opening device 3'.
Also, the package 1 'differs from the package 1 also in that it is formed from a sheet 21' of packaging material (see fig. 6).
Since the sheet of packaging material 21' is similar to the sheet of packaging material 21, the following description is limited to only the differences between them and uses the same reference numerals for the same or corresponding components where possible.
In particular, the sheet of packaging material 21 'also differs from the sheet of packaging material 21 in that the opening device 3' is included.
In more detail and with particular reference to fig. 4 and 5, the opening device 3' differs from the opening device 3 in that the base frame 15 further comprises a second flange 40 spaced apart from the first flange 34 and in particular parallel to the first flange 34.
Preferably, the first flange 34 and the second flange 40 may be connected to each other.
In particular, the second flange 40 is connected (in particular fused to, even more in particular molded to) the first face, or is connected (in particular fused to, even more in particular molded to) to the outer surface 13 after the package 1 is formed.
Furthermore, the first flange 34 and the second flange 40 define respective gaps for inserting a portion of the sheet of packaging material base 22 or a portion of the second wall 7 between each other after the package 1 is formed.
In more detail and with particular reference to fig. 4 and 5, the second flange 40 may comprise a peripheral portion 42, in particular having the same shape as the peripheral portion 35. Alternatively, the shape of peripheral portion 42 may be at least partially different from the shape of peripheral portion 35.
Since the formation of the sheet of packaging material 21' is similar to the formation of the sheet of packaging material 21, we refer to the description provided for the formation of the sheet of packaging material 21.
In addition, since the form package 1' is similar to the form package 1, we refer to the description provided for forming the package 1.
Referring to fig. 7, the numeral 1 "indicates an alternative embodiment of a package according to the invention; since package 1 "is similar to package 1, the following description is limited to only the differences between them and uses the same reference numerals for the same or corresponding components where possible.
In particular, the package 1 "differs from the package 1 in that it comprises opening means 3" and in that the designated opening extends above two respective walls, in particular the second wall 7 and one side wall 6.
Also, the package 1 "differs from the package 1' also in that it is formed from a sheet 21" of packaging material (see fig. 9).
Since the sheet of packaging material 21 "is similar to the sheet of packaging material 21', the following description is limited to the differences between them and uses the same reference numerals for the same or corresponding components where possible.
In particular, the sheet of packaging material 21 "differs from the sheet of packaging material 21' in that it comprises opening devices 3" and a sheet of packaging material base 22".
In more detail, the packaging material sheet base 22″ is different from the packaging material sheet base 22 in that the designated opening includes a first opening portion and a second opening portion.
Furthermore, one panel 31 (in particular the panel defining at least partially the second wall 7) comprises a first opening portion, while the other panel 31 (in particular the panel defining one side wall 6) comprises a second opening portion.
In more detail, one crease line 30 (in particular a crease line transverse to the reference crease line 37, more in particular a crease line perpendicular to the reference crease line 37) is interposed between the panel 31 having the first opening portion and the panel 31 having the second opening portion.
In more detail, crease line 30 interposed between panel 31 with a first opening portion and panel 31 with a second opening portion defines an auxiliary reference crease line 46 transversal (in particular perpendicular) to reference crease line 37. In addition, and with particular reference to fig. 7-9, the opening device 3″ may differ from the opening device 3' in that the first flange 34 may include a first flange portion 47, a second flange portion 48, and a fold line 49 interposed between the first flange portion 47 and the second flange portion 48. In particular, the fold line 49 is configured such that during formation of the package 1 (i.e. during folding of the respective sheet of packaging material 21 "), the first flange 34 is folded along the fold line 49 such that the first flange portion 47 and the second flange portion 48 are arranged transverse to each other, in particular (substantially) perpendicular to each other.
Preferably, fold line 49 may be parallel to auxiliary reference crease line 46. In particular, fold line 49 may be aligned with auxiliary reference crease line 46.
According to some possible non-limiting embodiments, the distance between the auxiliary reference crease line 46 and the fold line 49 may be equal to or less than 2.0mm, in particular equal to or less than 1.0mm, even more in particular equal to or less than 0.5mm.
Further, the first flange portion 47 may be associated with the first opening portion, and the second flange portion 48 may cover and seal the second opening portion.
Additionally, auxiliary reference crease line 46 may include a first portion 50 and a second portion 51 separated from each other.
Advantageously, the fold line 49 may be parallel to the first portion 50 and the second portion 51 and interposed between the first portion 50 and the second portion 51. In particular, fold line 49 may extend between first portion 50 and second portion 51.
Further, the first flange portion 47 may comprise an outer peripheral portion 35, in particular a straight outer peripheral portion 36.
Further, the first flange portion 47 may include a channel, and the collar 17 may be connected to the first flange portion 47 and extend from the first flange portion 47. Likewise, the retaining element 20 may also extend from the first flange portion 47.
It should be noted that once package 1 "is formed from sheet 21" of packaging material, one respective wall of body 2 comprises a first opening portion and the other wall comprises a second opening portion, in particular the two walls being transverse to each other. In more detail, the second wall 7 comprises a first opening portion and one transverse wall 6 comprises a second opening portion.
Since the formation of the sheet of packaging material 21 "is similar to the formation of the sheet of packaging material 21, we refer to the description provided for the formation of the sheet of packaging material 21.
In addition, since forming package 1 "is similar to forming package 1, we refer to the description provided for forming package 1.
The advantages of the sheet of packaging material 21,21',21 "and/or the package 1,1',1" and/or the method for forming the sheet of packaging material 21,21',21 "and/or the method for forming the package 1,1',1" according to the invention will become clear from the foregoing description.
In particular, by forming the package 1,1',1 "in dependence of the sheet of packaging material 21,21',21", the transportation and reclosing properties of the package 1,1',1 "may be improved. In particular, by having the rectilinear peripheral portion 35 adjacent and parallel to the reference crease line 37 (the respective second transversal edge 10), the load acting on the respective opening devices 3,3',3″ can be transferred to one or more side walls 6. This again allows to avoid any risk that the respective body 2 may be deformed.
Another advantage is that providing the first flange 34 with the first flange portion 47 and the second flange portion 48 further enhances the effect of the straight peripheral portion 35 being adjacent and parallel to the reference crease line 37 (the respective second transverse edge 10).
An additional advantage is that having the straight peripheral portion 35 adjacent and parallel to the reference crease line 37 improves the folding of the sheet of packaging material 21,21',21 "into the respective package 1,1', 1".
It is clear that variations may be made to the sheet of packaging material 21,21',21 "and/or the package 1,1',1" and/or the method for forming the sheet of packaging material 21,21',21 "and/or the method for forming the package 1,1',1" as described herein without departing from the scope of protection as defined in the accompanying claims.
According to some possible embodiments, not shown, the opening device 3″ may not comprise the second flange 41.
