Abstract

技术领域
本发明是有关于一种显示装置。
背景技术
在目前高节能的时代及趋势中,体积轻薄且省电的显示装置成为目前显示器领域的发展重点之一,而双稳态液晶显示装置更是受到瞩目。其中,胆固醇液晶显示装置(Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Display,ChLCD)因具有低功耗、不需背光模块以及无蓝光伤眼等优点,且能在移除电场的情况下,持续维持亮态与暗态两种不同的状态,因此成为双稳态显示器的发展重点。
胆固醇液晶是一种具有布拉格反射及双稳态的特性的液晶分子,其可反射波长与其螺距相当且旋光性相同的入射光,在电场的驱动下可切换至反射态(planar state)或穿透态(focal-conic state)这两种稳态。胆固醇液晶在反射态时会反射特定波长的光线,因此对应的像素会呈现亮态;在穿透态时会使光线穿透而被设置于其后的吸光层吸收,因此对应的像素会呈现暗态。
然而,胆固醇液晶的反应时间较长。当胆固醇液晶要从穿透态转换为反射态时,必须提供一临界电压来驱动胆固醇液晶,临界电压通常是大于40伏特,且需要特殊波形的电压。切换到穿透态时,亦需要较高的电压。此外,胆固醇液晶的电压维持率较低,无法搭配主动式元件。因此,亟需提供一种显示装置,来解决现有技术所存在的问题。
发明内容
本发明提供一种显示装置,具备良好的显示品质。
根据本发明一实施例,提供一种显示装置,包括基板、胆固醇液晶层、圆偏光片、液晶层、电极层以及吸光层。胆固醇液晶层包括多个反射单元,这些反射单元排列于基板上。圆偏光片设置于胆固醇液晶层上。液晶层包括多个囊封粒子,这些囊封粒子中容置有液晶分子,且液晶层设置于胆固醇液晶层以及圆偏光片之间。电极层包括多个共电极及多个像素电极,且电极层设置于液晶层上,以驱动这些囊封粒子中的液晶分子。胆固醇液晶层设置于液晶层以及吸光层之间。这些囊封粒子的平均粒径落在10nm至400nm之间的范围内。
根据本发明一实施例,这些囊封粒子的平均粒径落在150nm至250nm之间的范围内,且这些囊封粒子的聚合物分散性指数小于1.2。
根据本发明一实施例,当液晶层没有被施加驱动电压,这些囊封粒子中的液晶分子的排列方向一致。

基于上述,本发明实施例提供的显示装置具备液晶层。借由对液晶层施加电压,取代现有技艺中对胆固醇液晶层施加驱动电压的方式,避免了各种现有技术所存在的问题。此外,本发明实施例提供的显示装置优化囊封粒子的平均粒径大小,大幅提升显示装置的显示品质。

参照图1A,其绘示根据本发明第一实施例的显示装置在亮态的横截面示意图。显示装置100包括基板101、胆固醇液晶层102、圆偏光片103、液晶层104、电极层104E、基板106以及吸光层105。胆固醇液晶层102包括反射单元102R、102G、102B,这些反射单元排列于基板101上,且具有相同旋性。圆偏光片103设置于胆固醇液晶层102上。液晶层104包括多个囊封粒子104B以及支撑部104S,这些囊封粒子104B中容置有液晶分子LC,且液晶层104设置于胆固醇液晶层102以及圆偏光片103之间。电极层104E包括多个共电极104C及多个像素电极104P,且电极层104E设置于液晶层104上,以驱动这些囊封粒子104B中的液晶分子LC。胆固醇液晶层102设置于液晶层104以及吸光层105之间。吸光层105设置于基板101以及胆固醇液晶层102之间。这些囊封粒子104B的平均粒径落在10nm至400nm之间的范围内。
在本实施例中,圆偏光片103允许右旋偏振光穿透。胆固醇液晶层102为反射态(planar state),其中反射单元102R、102G、102B得以反射右旋偏振光,且反射单元102R、反射单元102G以及反射单元102B中的胆固醇液晶的螺距不同,可以反射不同波长的右旋圆偏振光。在本实施例中,反射单元102R可以反射红色右旋圆偏振光,反射单元102G可以反射绿色右旋圆偏振光,反射单元102B可以反射蓝色右旋圆偏振光。但本发明不以此为限,在本发明另一实施例中,圆偏光片103允许左旋偏振光穿透。胆固醇液晶层102为反射态(planarstate),其中反射单元102R、102G、102B可以分别反射红色、绿色及蓝色左旋偏振光。
同时参照图1A及图2,在本实施例中,当未借由电极层104E施加驱动电压,液晶层104中的多个囊封粒子104B中的液晶分子LC的排列方向一致,液晶分子LC的长轴皆平行于基板101的法线方向。具体而言,由于这些囊封粒子104B的平均粒径落在10nm至400nm之间的范围内,使得每一个液晶分子LC的长轴得以朝向同一个方向,相互平行,如图1A及图2所示。相对的,若囊封粒子104B的平均粒径过大,在没有电压驱动的情况下,每一个液晶分子LC的长轴将无法朝同一个方向。在本发明的另一实施例中,可以借由高压均质乳化或SPG(Shirasu Porous Glass)膜乳化制程来制造具有平均粒径落在150nm至250nm之间的范围内的囊封粒子104B的液晶层104,且这些囊封粒子104B的聚合物分散性指数(Polymerdispersity index,PDI)小于1.2,聚合物分散性指数小,分子量分布平均,粒子大小相近。
在本发明的第一实施例中,参照图1A,当显示装置100外部的光线(白光)自圆偏光片103上方进入显示装置100,只有右旋偏振光会透射圆偏光片103。当未借由电极层104E施加驱动电压,液晶层104中的多个囊封粒子104B中的液晶分子LC的长轴皆平行于基板101的法线方向,光线在穿透液晶层104后不会改变其偏振态,维持右旋偏振。这些光线继续朝胆固醇液晶层102行进,并受到反射单元102R、反射单元102G以及反射单元102B的反射而分别产生红色右旋偏振光、绿色右旋偏振光以及蓝色右旋偏振光。这些各色右旋偏振光穿透液晶层104后仍维持右旋偏振态,在穿透圆偏光片103后,射出显示装置100,显示装置100显示为亮态。
接下来参照图1B,其绘示根据本发明第一实施例的显示装置在暗态的横截面示意图。当借由电极层104E施加驱动电压,并且使得液晶层104中的多个囊封粒子104B中的液晶分子LC的长轴皆垂直于基板101的法线,穿透圆偏光片103的右旋偏振光在穿透液晶层104后会改变其偏振态,成为左旋偏振光。这些光线继续朝胆固醇液晶层102行进,穿透反射单元102R、102G以及102B而被吸光层105吸收,显示装置100显示为暗态。
具体而言,本第一实施例提供的显示装置100具备液晶层104。根据不同的灰阶需求,对液晶层104施加电压,改变囊封粒子104B中的液晶分子LC的定向,取代现有技艺中的显示装置对胆固醇液晶层施加驱动电压的方式,避免了各种现有技艺所存在的高临界电压、反应时间长、低电压维持率等问题。此外,根据本发明第一实施例所提供的显示装置100优化了囊封粒子104B的平均粒径大小,大幅提升显示装置100的显示品质。
根据本发明一实施例,囊封粒子104B中的液晶分子LC的介电系数落在10F/m至30F/m的范围内,液晶分子LC的双折射率差值落在0.23至0.32的范围内。借由最大化介电异方性(dielectric anisotropy)以及光学异方性(optical anisotropy)来提高克尔效应(Kerr effect)。此外,借由最大化介电异方性(dielectric anisotropy)来降低电极层104E的操作电压。
根据本发明一实施例,液晶层104的支撑部104S包括完全碱化聚乙烯醇(fully-hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol),其碱化率落在98%至99%的范围之间。因为支撑部104S必须支撑整个液晶层104,以防止囊封粒子104B受到外力的伤害,因此,选择完全水解的完全碱化聚乙烯醇来实现这一目标。
根据本发明一实施例,囊封粒子104B的粒子壁包括部分碱化聚乙烯醇(partially-hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol),其碱化率落在80%至96%的范围之间。因为囊封粒子104B的粒子壁必须足够坚固以防止液晶分子LC漏出,且需要和水以及液晶相容,因此选择部分水解的部分碱化聚乙烯醇。
在图1A及图1B所示的第一实施例中,吸光层105设置于基板101以胆固醇液晶层102之间。但是本发明不以此为限,根据本发明一实施例,基板101可以设置于吸光层105以及胆固醇液晶层102之间。
为了充分说明本发明的各种实施态样,将在下文描述本发明的其他实施例。在此必须说明的是,下述实施例沿用前述实施例的元件标号与部分内容,其中采用相同的标号来表示相同或近似的元件,并且省略了相同技术内容的说明。关于省略部分的说明可参考前述实施例,下述实施例不再重复赘述。
在图1A及图1B所示的第一实施例中,电极层104E设置于圆偏光片103以及液晶层104之间。但是本发明不以此为限,参照图3,其绘示根据本发明第二实施例的显示装置的横截面示意图。显示装置200与显示装置100不同在于,液晶层104设置于圆偏光片103以及电极层204E之间。圆偏光片103可以直接贴附于液晶层104上。显示装置200还可以包括设置于胆固醇液晶层102以及液晶层104之间的阻隔层207。阻隔层207包含氮化硅(SiNx)及氧化硅(SiOx)等,但是本发明不以此为限,显示装置200可以不包括阻隔层207。
参照图4A,其绘示根据本发明第三实施例的显示装置在暗态的横截面示意图。相较于图1A所示的第一实施例的显示装置在亮态的横截面示意图,图4A所示的显示装置300不同在于,圆偏光片303为左旋圆偏光片,其允许左旋偏振光穿透。
在此说明图4A所示的显示装置300的光学表现:当显示装置300外部的光线自圆偏光片303上方进入显示装置300,只有左旋偏振光会透射圆偏光片303。当未借由电极层104E施加驱动电压,液晶层104中的多个囊封粒子104B中的液晶分子LC的长轴皆平行于基板101的法线方向,光线在穿透液晶层104后不会改变其偏振态,维持左旋偏振。这些光线继续朝胆固醇液晶层102行进,穿透反射单元102R、102G以及102B而被吸光层105吸收,显示装置300显示为暗态。

参照图5,其绘示根据本发明第四实施例的显示装置的横截面示意图。显示装置400与显示装置300不同在于,液晶层104设置于圆偏光片303以及电极层404E之间。圆偏光片303可以直接贴附于液晶层104上。显示装置400还可以包括设置于胆固醇液晶层102以及液晶层104之间的阻隔层407,但是本发明不以此为限,显示装置400可以不包括阻隔层407。
综上所述,本发明实施例提供的显示装置具备液晶层。根据不同的灰阶需求,对液晶层施加电压,改变囊封粒子中的液晶分子的定向,取代现有技艺中的显示装置对胆固醇液晶层施加驱动电压的方式,避免了各种现有技艺所存在的高临界电压、反应时间长、低电压维持率等问题。此外,根据本发明实施例所提供的显示装置还优化了囊封粒子的平均粒径大小,大幅提升显示装置的显示品质。
Claims (12)
1.一种显示装置,包括:
一基板;
一胆固醇液晶层,包括多个反射单元,所述反射单元排列于该基板上;
一圆偏光片,设置于该胆固醇液晶层上;
一液晶层,包括多个囊封粒子,所述囊封粒子中容置有液晶分子,且该液晶层设置于该胆固醇液晶层以及该圆偏光片之间;
一电极层,包括多个共电极及多个像素电极,且该电极层设置于该液晶层上,以驱动所述囊封粒子中的液晶分子;以及
一吸光层,其中该胆固醇液晶层设置于该液晶层以及该吸光层之间,
其中当该液晶层没有被施加驱动电压时,所述囊封粒子中的液晶分子的排列方向一致,
其中所述囊封粒子的平均粒径落在150nm至250nm之间的范围内,且所述囊封粒子的聚合物分散性指数小于1.2。
2.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中该吸光层设置于该基板以及该胆固醇液晶层之间。
3.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中该基板设置于该吸光层以及该胆固醇液晶层之间。
4.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中不同的反射单元中的胆固醇液晶的螺距不同。
5.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中该电极层设置于该圆偏光片以及该液晶层之间。
6.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中该液晶层设置于该圆偏光片以及该电极层之间。
7.如权利要求6所述的显示装置,还包括一阻隔层,设置于该胆固醇液晶层以及该液晶层之间。
8.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中所述囊封粒子中的液晶分子的介电系数落在10F/m至30F/m的范围内。
9.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中所述囊封粒子中的液晶分子的双折射率差值落在0.23至0.32的范围内。
10.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中该液晶层是借由高压均质乳化或SPG膜乳化制程制造。
11.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中该液晶层还包括完全碱化聚乙烯醇。
12.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中所述囊封粒子的粒子壁包括部分碱化聚乙烯醇。
