技术领域
本文讨论的实施方式涉及光器件及光通信装置。
背景技术
一般来说,诸如光调制器之类的光器件可包含具有形成于芯片表面上的光波导的光调制器芯片。光调制器芯片包括布置在光波导上的信号电极。当电压被施加到信号电极时,在光波导中产生在垂直于光调制器芯片的表面的方向上的电场。电场的产生改变了光波导的折射率,这也改变了传播通过光波导的光的相位,使得可以调制光。即,光调制器芯片的光波导可以形成例如马赫-曾德尔(Mach-Zehnder)干涉仪,并且可以输出IQ信号,该IQ信号例如通过平行布置的多个光波导之间的光束的相位差来经历XY偏振复用。
当光调制器芯片执行高速调制时,具有数十GHz的频带的高速信号被输入到沿着光波导布置的信号电极。因此,信号电极有时采用能够获得宽带传输特性的共面结构。也就是说,信号电极和在信号电极的两侧上的一对接地电极有时被布置在光波导上方。
另一方面,光波导有时通过从基板的表面扩散诸如钛之类的金属而形成在与信号电极对准的位置处。另外,有时在与信号电极对准的位置处形成使用铌酸锂(LN)结晶的薄膜的薄膜光波导。与扩散金属的扩散光波导相比,薄膜光波导可以增强光的约束,导致电场的施加效率的改善以及驱动电压的降低。
图8是示出薄膜光波导的特定示例的截面图。如图8所示,由二氧化硅(SiO2)形成的缓冲层20层叠在LN基板10上,并且薄膜LN基板30层叠在缓冲层20上。向上突出的光波导1形成在薄膜LN基板30的中央。此外,薄膜LN基板30和光波导1被缓冲层40覆盖,并且具有共面结构的信号电极被布置在缓冲层40的表面上。也就是说,信号电极2S被布置在与光波导1对准的位置处,其中一对接地电极2G被布置在信号电极2S的两侧上。
利用这样的薄膜光波导,可以通过向信号电极2S施加电压以产生电场并改变光波导1的折射率来调制光波导1中传播的光。此外,由于薄膜LN基板30和光波导1层叠在缓冲层20上,所以光能够被可靠地约束在光波导1中,使得可以减小施加到信号电极2S的驱动电压。

此外,薄膜光波导很可能具有增加的光传播损耗,导致光插入损耗的增加。鉴于此,可以想到使用具有微带结构的信号电极代替具有共面结构的信号电极。具有微带结构的信号电极将进一步增加电场施加效率,使得能够增强光波导的每单位长度的调制效率,从而导致信号电极的长度减小。因此,可以减少光波导中的光的插入损耗。
另一方面,使用具有微带结构的信号电极包括调制频带窄的问题。具体地,在具有微带结构的信号电极中,由信号电极发射的微波的有效折射率(等效折射率)较小,因此,微波的速度高于在光波导中传播的光的速度。结果,调制效率降低,特别是在高频带中,从而使调制频带变窄。
因此,本发明的实施方式的一个方面的目的是提供一种能够实现加宽的调制频带的光器件和光通信装置。
发明内容
根据实施方式的一个方面,一种光器件包括:具有接地电位的接地电极;由层叠在所述接地电极上的薄膜基板形成的薄膜光波导;信号电极,所述信号电极隔着所述薄膜光波导布置在面向所述接地电极的位置处,并且发射高频信号;以及介电体,所述介电体覆盖所述信号电极的暴露表面的至少一部分。

[a]第一实施方式
图1是示出根据第一实施方式的光通信装置100的配置的框图。图1所示的光通信装置100包括数字信号处理器(DSP)110、光源120、光调制器130和光接收电路140。
DSP 110是执行数字信号处理的电气组件。具体地,DSP 110执行诸如传输数据的编码的处理,生成包括传输数据的电信号并将电信号输出到光调制器130。此外,DSP 110从光接收电路140获取包括接收到的数据的电信号,执行诸如电信号的解码的处理,并且获得所接收的数据。
光源120包括例如激光二极管,并产生具有预定波长的光,并将光提供给光调制器130和光接收电路140。
光调制器130通过使用从DSP 110输出的电信号来调制从光源120提供的光,并且将所获得的光传输信号发送到光纤。如下文将描述的,光调制器130包括薄膜光波导和具有微带结构的信号电极。当从光源120提供的光传播通过薄膜光波导时,光调制器130通过输入到信号电极的电信号调制光,并生成光传输信号。下面将详细描述光调制器130的配置。
光接收电路140接收来自光纤的光信号,并使用从光源120提供的光对接收到的光信号进行解调。光接收电路140然后将接收到的光信号转换成电信号,并将所获得的电信号输出到DSP 110。
图2是示出光调制器130的配置的示意性平面图。图2中所示的光调制器130包括光调制器芯片131、光波导基板132、射频(RF)终端器133和偏振束组合器(PBC)134。
光调制器芯片131是在输入侧连接到来自光源120的光纤而在输出侧连接到用于发出传输信号的光纤的半导体芯片。光波导基板132、RF终端器133和PBC 134安装在光调制器芯片131上。
光波导基板132包括薄膜光波导201和信号电极202。当从光源120供应的光传播通过薄膜光波导201时,光波导基板132通过从信号电极202施加的电场来调制光。
薄膜光波导201是例如通过使用薄膜LN基板形成的光波导,并且从光调制器芯片131的输入侧重复地分支以构成具有多个平行光波导的马赫-曾德尔干涉仪。传播通过薄膜光波导201之后的调制光被输出到PBC 134。
信号电极202是设置在与薄膜光波导201对准的位置处的具有微带结构的传输路径,并且与从DSP 110输出的电信号相对应地将电场施加到薄膜光波导201。信号电极202的端子连接到RF终端器133。此外,信号电极202的暴露表面的至少一部分被介电体覆盖,导致由信号电极202发射的微波的有效折射率(等效折射率)的增加。这降低了由信号电极202发射的微波的速度,以便接近传播通过薄膜光波导201的光的速度。这使得能够抑制高频带中的调制效率的降低,从而导致加宽的调制频带的实现。
RF终端器133连接到光波导基板132上的信号电极202的端子,以防止由信号电极202发射的信号的不期望的反射。
布置在光波导基板132的输出侧上的PBC 134用于组合已经传播通过薄膜光波导201的调制光的偏振束。也就是说,PBC 134将从光波导基板132输出的一组光束分别组合为例如水平偏振波和垂直偏振波。

如图3所示,关于薄膜光波导201和信号电极202的部分,提供了层叠在LN基板210上的具有微带结构的接地电极220,并且夹在缓冲层230和250之间的薄膜LN基板240层叠在接地电极220上。
LN基板210例如是由铌酸锂(LN)形成的厚度为大约几百微米的基板。接地电极220是由诸如铜之类的金属形成的具有接地电位并且具有例如0.5μm至5μm的厚度的电极。缓冲层230是由具有高折射率的透明材料(诸如二氧化硅(SiO2)或二氧化钛(TiO2))形成的厚度为1μm至10μm的层。类似地,缓冲层250是由SiO2、TiO2等形成并且具有0.2μm至3μm的厚度的层。
具有0.5μm至3μm的厚度的薄膜LN基板240夹在缓冲层230和250之间。此外,向上突出的薄膜光波导201形成在薄膜LN基板240的中央。例如,用作薄膜光波导201的突起的宽度大约为1μm至8μm。薄膜LN基板240和薄膜光波导201被缓冲层250覆盖,并且信号电极202被布置在缓冲层250的表面上。也就是说,信号电极202隔着薄膜光波导201面向接地电极220,并且构成具有微带结构的传输路径。
信号电极202由诸如铜之类的金属形成,并且具有2μm至10μm的宽度和1μm至20μm的高度。通过由信号电极202发送与从DSP 110输出的电信号相对应的高频信号,产生在从信号电极202到接地电极220的方向上的电场。该电场被施加到薄膜光波导201。这改变了薄膜光波导201的折射率,使得可以调制传播通过薄膜光波导201的光。
信号电极202的暴露的侧表面和顶表面被介电膜260覆盖。介电膜260可通过使用其上沉积SiO2、TiO2、氧化铝(Al2O3)、五氧化二钽(Ta2O5)等的膜或氮氧化硅膜(SiON膜)等来制造。当使用这些介电材料形成介电膜260时,例如可以通过使用溅射方法来执行沉积。例如,介电膜260的厚度约为0.4μm至5μm。
通过用介电膜260覆盖信号电极202的暴露的表面,增加了由信号电极202发射的微波的有效折射率。可以通过改变介电膜260的厚度将有效折射率的大小调整到所需要的大小。此外,微波的速度随着有效折射率的增加而减小,接近传播通过薄膜光波导201的光的速度。这导致抑制高频带中的调制效率的降低,从而导致加宽的调制频带的实现。
如上所述,根据本实施方式,薄膜光波导被布置在具有微带结构的信号电极与接地电极之间,并且信号电极被介电膜覆盖。这增加了由信号电极发射的微波的有效折射率并且降低了微波的速度,接近传播通过薄膜光波导的光的速度。这导致抑制高频带中的调制效率的降低,从而导致加宽的调制频带的实现。
如上所述,由于可以通过改变介电膜260的厚度来调整有效折射率的大小,因此可以以相对高的自由度来改变信号电极202的尺寸(宽度和高度)。
具体地,例如,如图4所示,信号电极202的宽度WS可以形成为大于薄膜光波导201的宽度WL。这进一步增强了将电场施加到薄膜光波导201的效率,使得可以降低驱动电压。此外,信号电极202的增加的宽度WS将增加信号电极202的横截面积并且降低电阻值,从而导致信号频带改进。
此外,例如,如图5所示,信号电极202可以具有其中高度HS大于宽度WS的横截面形状。这使得能够增加信号电极202的横截面积,同时抑制信号电极202的阻抗的减小并抑制高频带中的反射。
[b]第二实施方式
第二实施方式的特征在于,信号电极嵌入在介电层中,以便用介电层覆盖信号电极的侧表面。
根据第二实施方式的光通信装置和光调制器的配置类似于第一实施方式中的配置,因此将省略描述。在第二实施方式中,光波导基板132的配置不同于第一实施方式中的配置。
图6是示出根据第二实施方式的光波导基板132的配置的截面图。类似于图3,图6示出了图2中的线段A处的横截面。在图6中,与图3中的组件相同的组件由相同的附图标记表示,并且将省略其描述。
如图6所示,在第二实施方式中,介电层270层叠在缓冲层250上。介电层270与薄膜光波导201对准的位置被形成为开口,并且将信号电极202布置在开口处。因此,信号电极202的侧表面被介电层270覆盖,而信号电极202的顶表面被暴露。
可以通过使用其上沉积SiO2、TiO2、Al2O3、Ta2O5等的膜或SiON膜来制造介电层270。当使用这些介电材料形成介电层270时,例如可以通过使用溅射方法来执行沉积。当介电层270和缓冲层250由相同的材料形成时,不需要单独地提供介电层270和缓冲层250,并且可允许提供集成了介电层270和缓冲层250的介电层。
通过例如蚀刻或剥离以去除与薄膜光波导201对准的位置处的介电体来形成介电层270的开口。此外,例如,通过诸如铜之类的金属的气相沉积和电镀在介电层270的开口中形成信号电极202。该过程导致形成其侧表面被介电层270覆盖的信号电极202。这样的形成方法可以省略在信号电极202的侧表面或顶表面上形成介电膜的必要性,简化了光波导基板132的制造工艺。
通过用介电层270覆盖信号电极202的侧表面,由信号电极202发射的微波的有效折射率增加。通过改变介电层270在信号电极202的宽度方向上的厚度,可以将有效折射率的大小调整到所期望的大小。例如,可以通过蚀刻或剥离去除不必要的部分来改变介电层270在信号电极202的宽度方向上的厚度。另外,微波的速度将随着有效折射率的增加而减小,接近传播通过薄膜光波导201的光的速度。这导致抑制高频带中的调制效率的降低,从而导致加宽的调制频带的实现。
如上所述,根据本实施方式,薄膜光波导被布置在微带结构的信号电极和接地电极之间,并且嵌入介电层中的信号电极的侧表面被介电层覆盖。这增加了由信号电极发射的微波的有效折射率并且降低了微波的速度,接近传播通过薄膜光波导的光的速度。这导致抑制高频带中的调制效率的降低,从而导致加宽的调制频带的实现。另外,可以容易地形成被介电体覆盖的信号电极。
在第二实施方式中,为了增加信号电极202的横截面积并减小电阻值,例如,如图7所示,附加电极203可以连接到信号电极202的顶表面。此时,附加电极203的宽度W2可形成为大于信号电极202的宽度W1,以有效地增加横截面积。也就是说,可形成附加电极203以从信号电极202的顶表面延伸到介电层270的顶表面。
通过在介电层270的顶表面上形成具有宽度W2的开口的抗蚀剂膜,并且例如在开口中沉积和电镀诸如铜之类的金属来制造附加电极203。此时,可以在与信号电极202不同的步骤中形成附加电极203。然而,还允许首先在介电层270中形成用于信号电极202的开口,并且此后在介电层270的顶表面上形成抗蚀剂膜以便执行气相沉积和电镀,从而同时制造电极,即,将信号电极202与附加电极203集成的电极。
尽管第二实施方式是信号电极202的高度和介电层270的厚度相同的示例性情况,但是信号电极202的高度和介电层270的厚度不一定相同。也就是说,例如,介电层270的厚度可以小于信号电极202的高度,并且信号电极202的侧表面的靠近缓冲层250的一部分可以被介电层270选择性地覆盖。从信号电极202产生的电场朝向接地电极220附近的下侧具有更高的强度。因此,通过由介电层270覆盖信号电极202的侧表面的靠近缓冲层250的下侧,可以有效地增加有效折射率。
根据本申请中公开的光器件和光通信装置的一个方面,存在实现加宽的调制频带的效果。
Claims (8)
1.一种光器件,该光器件包括:
接地电极,所述接地电极具有接地电位;
薄膜光波导,所述薄膜光波导由层叠在所述接地电极上的薄膜基板形成;
信号电极,所述信号电极隔着所述薄膜光波导布置在面向所述接地电极的位置处,并且发射高频信号;以及
介电体,所述介电体覆盖所述信号电极的暴露表面的至少一部分。
2.根据权利要求1所述的光器件,所述光器件还包括:
第一缓冲层,所述第一缓冲层层叠在所述接地电极和所述薄膜基板之间;以及
第二缓冲层,所述第二缓冲层层叠在所述薄膜基板上并且覆盖所述薄膜光波导,
其中,所述信号电极在与所述薄膜光波导对准的位置处布置在所述第二缓冲层的表面上。
3.根据权利要求1所述的光器件,其中,
所述信号电极的宽度大于所述薄膜光波导的宽度。
4.根据权利要求1所述的光器件,其中,
所述信号电极具有高度大于宽度的横截面形状。
5.根据权利要求1所述的光器件,其中,
所述介电体包括介电膜,该介电膜覆盖所述信号电极的侧表面和远离所述接地电极的一侧的表面。
6.根据权利要求1所述的光器件,其中,
所述介电体包括层叠在所述薄膜基板上的介电层,并且
所述信号电极在与所述薄膜光波导对准的位置处嵌入在所述介电层中。
7.根据权利要求1所述的光器件,其中,所述信号电极包括:
第一电极,所述第一电极具有覆盖有所述介电体的侧表面;以及
第二电极,所述第二电极连接到所述第一电极的远离所述接地电极的表面,并且比所述第一电极宽。
8.一种光通信装置,该光通信装置包括:
处理器,所述处理器对电信号执行信号处理;
光源,所述光源产生光;以及
光器件,所述光器件通过使用从所述处理器输出的电信号来调制从所述光源产生的光,
其中,所述光器件包括:
接地电极,所述接地电极具有接地电位;
薄膜光波导,所述薄膜光波导由层叠在所述接地电极上的薄膜基板形成;
信号电极,所述信号电极隔着所述薄膜光波导布置在面向所述接地电极的位置处,并且发射高频信号;以及
介电体,所述介电体覆盖所述信号电极的暴露表面的至少一部分。
