Abstract

A paper material comprising a base support made of a mixture of cellulosic fibers containing at least one polymeric substance suitable for producing a mixture having fibrous mechanical strength and an inorganic filler, said base support having at least one surface treated with at least one surface binder and at least one coating applied on said treated surface, said coating comprising at least a pearlescent pigment of high light resistance.

Description

Pearlescent metallic effect paper material with high light resistance and related manufacturing method
Description
The present invention relates to paper materials (paper/card) and related methods of manufacture.
In the paper industry, new papers with specific properties and finishes are constantly sought, especially papers designed for packaging, realization of illustrative materials, quality printing, etc.
However, it is not uncommon for special effects to be achieved which are detrimental to other properties of the paper, such as printability.
The technical task of the present invention is to provide a paper material which has a different optical effect than conventional paper materials, while also being printable with a high print quality.
This technical task is solved by a paper material comprising a base support made of a mixture of cellulose fibers comprising at least one polymeric substance suitable for producing a mixture having a fibrous mechanical strength and an inorganic filler, said base support having at least one surface treated with at least one surface binder and at least one coating applied on said treated surface, characterized in that said coating comprises at least a pearlescent pigment with high light resistance.
The invention also discloses a process for making a paper material comprising the steps of:
-preparing an aqueous pulp of cellulosic fibres comprising at least one polymeric substance suitable for producing a mixture having a fibrous mechanical strength, and an inorganic filler;
-removing water from the pulp so as to form a base support for the paper material;
-treating at least one surface of the base carrier with at least one surface adhesive;
-smoothing the treated surface of the base carrier;
-applying a coating layer comprising at least a highly light-resistant pearlescent pigment to the smoothed surface.
In a preferred embodiment, the pearlescent pigment is a borosilicate or aluminosilicate, and in particular mica.
In a preferred embodiment, the pearlescent pigment is a transparent borosilicate or aluminosilicate coated with a metal oxide such as iron oxide, titanium oxide or tin oxide.
In a preferred embodiment, the pearlescent pigments are of various colors, particle sizes, and shapes.
In a preferred embodiment, the coating comprises one or more binder polymers and/or waxes in a mixture with said pearlescent pigment.
In a preferred embodiment, the coating comprises one or more binder polymers and/or waxes in a mixture with said pearlescent pigment and with magnetic or diamagnetic metal pigments.
In a preferred embodiment, the metallic pigment has various colors, particle sizes, and shapes.
In a preferred embodiment, the metallic effect pigments of the coating are those typically used in exterior grade paints.
Thus, the coating comprises pearlescent pigments, and optionally metallic pigments as well as pearlescent pigments.
Furthermore, the coating may comprise organic and inorganic pigments in addition to pearlescent and metallic pigments.
Organic or inorganic pigments, which may be colored, may also be present, contained in the base carrier.
Thus, the present invention provides highly light-resistant pearlescent paper material (paper/card) due to specially designed pulp and specific surface coating treatment.
The paper material of the present invention also proves to be perfectly printable with high print quality and enables it to achieve specific graphic effects that are difficult to achieve with conventionally coated papers.
In particular, the paper material of the invention comprises a base support made of a mixture of cellulosic fibres and which comprises at least one polymeric substance suitable for producing a mixture having fibrous mechanical strength (when dry or wet), and an inorganic filler suitable for imparting good processability characteristics to the material.
The base support has applied to it at least one surface (side) treated with at least one surface binder, so that the paper material has a pearlescent effect with various colors due to the combined effect of the composition of the base support and the surface treatment. Obviously, both sides of the basic carrier can be treated in the same way.
Preferably, the polymeric substance contained in the base support comprises one or more rosin-based and/or alkyl ketone based dimers and/or acetyl succinic acid-based and/or epichlorohydrin-based resins and/or modified starches; and the inorganic filler is a mineral filler comprising one or more substances selected from the group consisting of carbonate, kaolin, talc and mixtures thereof.
Surface adhesives are, for example, adhesives based on starch and/or on polyvinyl alcohol and/or polymers of acrylic, polyurethane and/or styrene-butadiene.
As mentioned above, the paper material according to the invention is provided with a coating, which is applied on the treated surface, and it is obvious that the paper material can have both a treated surface and a surface provided with a coating.
In particular, the coating is formed from one or more binder polymers (e.g., polyurethane and/or silicone, and/or acrylic, styrene-butadiene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, etc. based polymers) and/or waxes in the form of a mixture with dyes and pigments, e.g., pearlescent pigments having various colors, particle sizes and shapes, and having characteristics that are stable to exposure to the ultraviolet components of sunlight.
The amount of polymer per side is preferably between 5% and 100% by weight with respect to the pigment; the paper basis weight of the paper material is about 90g/m2And about 450g/m2To (c) to (d); the amount of coating spread on each side was about 5g/m2And about 20g/m2In the meantime.
The coating may be pigmented and/or spread onto the pigmented base support; preference is given to using coloring pastes and organic or inorganic pigments.
According to another aspect of the invention, the paper material described above is achieved using the following process.
The base carrier is first realized using substantially known paper forming techniques, for example on a continuous machine for making paper.
In substance, an aqueous pulp is prepared, comprising a mixture of cellulose fibres and comprising a polymeric substance (rosin-based and/or alkyl ketone-based and/or acetyl succinic acid-based and/or epichlorohydrin-based resins, and/or modified starches) and an inorganic filler (carbonate, kaolin, talc, etc.).
Subsequently, water is removed from the pulp to form a base support for the paper material.
Thereafter, a step of surface-treating one or both sides of the base support with an aqueous solution of a surface-adhesive, for example consisting of an aqueous solution of 10% by weight of starch, and/or of 5% by weight of an acrylic adhesive, or similar adhesive, is carried out.
After the surface treatment with the binder, the method then comprises a smoothing step of the base support, wherein the base support is smoothed until the Bendtsen ISO 2494 roughness value is less than about 450ml/min, preferably less than about 400ml/min, and about 350ml/min, before the application step of the aforementioned coating.
Preferably, the application of the coating is performed by spreading with an air knife or smooth blade, rotary offset, rotary engraving and flexographic techniques.
Then, a step of drying the coating is carried out in an infrared and/or hot air oven at a temperature ranging from about 100 ℃ to about 180 ℃ and in an oven time ranging between 0.5 minutes and 4 minutes.
Finally, the method comprises a step of mechanically treating the surface provided with the coating, in particular a smoothing and/or embossing step.
It should still be understood that modifications and variations can be made in view of the paper materials and associated methods of manufacture disclosed and illustrated herein without departing from the scope of the present invention as defined in the appended claims.
