Abstract
本发明的目的在于提供液晶显示装置(尤其是水平取向模式的液晶显示装置)、与该液晶显示装置的制造方法,该液晶显示装置即使为窄边框,密封材料也难以从上下基板剥离。本发明的液晶显示装置具备:上下基板;在该上下基板之间、包含液晶分子的液晶层及封入该液晶层的密封材料;以及取向控制层,其在该上下基板与该液晶层之间,对液晶分子进行取向控制;该上下基板与该密封材料直接接触;该取向控制层包含具有源自偏振光吸收性单体的结构的聚合物,所述偏振光吸收性单体具有偏振光吸收性骨架、和至少两个反应性官能基;该偏振光吸收性骨架含有桂皮酰基骨架。

技术领域
本发明关于液晶显示装置、及液晶显示装置的制造方法。
背景技术
近年来,液晶显示装置等的薄型显示装置迅速地普及,不仅电视用途,在电子书、数码相框、产业机器(Industrial Appliance)、个人计算机(PC)、平板PC、智能手机用途等也被广泛使用。在这些用途中,各种性能被要求,且各式各样的液晶显示模式正持续被开发中。
作为液晶显示模式,可举出IPS(In-Plane Switching)模式、FFS(Fringe FieldSwitching)模式等的、使液晶分子在无施加电压时相对于基板的主面大致水平的方向取向(定向)的模式(以下,也称为水平取向模式)。此外,也可举出VA(Vertical Alignment)模式等的、使液晶分子在无施加电压时相对于基板的主面大致垂直的方向取向的模式(以下,也称为垂直取向模式)。为了实现如此的液晶分子的取向控制,被提案有利用取向膜者(例如,参照专利文献1)。相对于此,也被提案有利用了代替现有的取向膜的方法者(例如,参照专利文献2及3)。

发明内容
本发明所要解决的课题
所述专利文献1揭示有:在IPS模式中,为了使取向长期间稳定,在取向膜材料中添加多官能单体,在形成取向膜后,使单体重合而形成高分子。然而,在所述专利文献1中记载的发明,未能解决以下问题:包含使取向膜成膜的工序,尤其是适用于窄边框的液晶面板的情形,取向膜的成膜装置的成膜精度上,由于形成取向膜与密封材料粘合的部分,因而在取向膜与密封材料的界面,密封材料会从取向膜剥离。
使用图9在以下说明关于利用现有的取向膜的一般的液晶面板。图9是表示现有的一般的液晶面板的剖面示意图。如图9所示,液晶面板700具备下侧基板710、与下侧基板710相对向的上侧基板720、配置在两基板间的液晶层730、以及密封材料S。密封材料S将下侧基板710和上侧基板720粘合。密封材料S也一并具有将被夹在玻璃基板之间的液晶保持在面板内的功能。下侧基板710、上侧基板720分别具有使液晶分子在液晶层侧的玻璃基板711、721上取向于已定的方向的取向膜717、727。
在此,取向膜717被夹在下侧基板710的玻璃基板711与密封材料S之间,取向膜727被夹在上侧基板720的玻璃基板721与密封材料S之间。下侧基板710及上侧基板720各自通常具有玻璃基板711、721等的支承基板,在这些支承基板上,根据液晶显示模式而适当地配置各种电极、绝缘膜、滤光器层等。例如在图9中,虽然示出了上侧基板720具有滤光器层CF,但是其他的部件并未图示。现有的取向膜717、727通常是使在取向膜材料中所含有的可聚合性单体聚合而形成者,例如可举出聚酰亚胺等的高分子系的取向膜。
然而,在如此的玻璃基板711与密封材料S之间夹着取向膜717且在玻璃基板721与密封材料S之间夹着取向膜727的一般的液晶面板,施加有外力、温度、湿度等的负载时,会有密封材料从取向膜剥离的情况。近年来的窄边框化(图9所示的边框区域Rf的狭小化)的液晶面板成为更容易发生此剥离者。这是因为,取向膜与密封材料的粘合强度原本就弱,且随着窄边框化,使密封材料的宽度(厚度)变细,从而使得取向膜与密封材料的粘合面积变得更小,粘合强度更弱。此外,取向膜被配置至液晶面板的缘部,当接触外部环境时,使液晶面板外部的水蒸气等容易通过取向膜渗入到液晶面板内,使得在液晶面板容易产生显示不良。作为用以解决如此的问题的构成,如图10所示,在具有下侧基板810、与下侧基板810相对向的上侧基板820、以及配置在两基板间的液晶层830的液晶显示装置中,作为不在玻璃基板811与密封材料S之间配置取向膜817、又不在玻璃基板821与密封材料S之间配置取向膜827者,想出使取向膜817、827与密封材料S不粘合。然而,在窄边框化的液晶面板中以如此的方式控制取向膜的位置的情形下,由于取向膜的成膜(印刷)装置的成膜精度于目前并不充分,因而在具备具有玻璃基板911的下侧基板910、具有玻璃基板921的上侧基板920、以及配置在两基板间的液晶层930的液晶显示装置中,形成有取向膜917、927与密封材料S粘合的部分(例如图11)。
因这些的理由,在窄边框化的液晶面板中,导致密封材料的与上侧基板/下侧基板的粘合强度降低,又难以防止外部环境的水蒸气渗入液晶面板等。
相对于此,如所述专利文献2、3中记载的发明,在利用了代替现有的取向膜的方法的情形下,由于不使用现有的取向膜,因此能够避免在取向膜与密封材料的界面产生剥离的问题。然而,于此情形,尚无法实现水平取向模式及垂直取向模式的两者。
所述专利文献2揭示有不使用现有的取向膜而在塑料基板上制造经垂直取向的液晶薄膜的方法。然而,所述专利文献2中记载的发明,是以实现垂直取向模式为目的,并不能实现水平取向模式的液晶显示装置。又,所述专利文献2记载的发明为液晶薄膜用,且液晶性化合物只由单体构成。因此,液晶薄膜制造后,不可能施加电压进行驱动,无法作为液晶显示用而被使用。
所述专利文献3揭示有:不具有现有的取向膜,且通过使在液晶层中添加的具有垂直取向基的聚合性单体聚合来形成垂直取向单体层。然而,所述专利文献3记载的发明,是以实现垂直取向模式的液晶显示装置为目的,并不能实现水平取向模式的液晶显示装置。
本发明是有鉴于所述现状而完成的,其目的在于提供一种液晶显示装置(尤其是水平取向模式的液晶显示装置)、以及该液晶显示装置的制造方法,所述液晶显示装置即使为窄边框,密封材料也难以从上下基板剥离。
用于解决课题的方法
本发明者们在针对即使为窄边框的液晶显示装置也能使密封材料难以从上下基板剥离、且不只可适用于垂直取向模式的液晶显示装置也能适用于水平取向模式的液晶显示装置的方法进行了各种研究下,发现到:在具备上下基板、和配置在上下基板间的液晶层以及密封材料的液晶显示装置中,通过对在液晶层中添加的偏振光吸收性单体照射紫外光而聚合的方法,可在上下基板各自的液晶层侧的面形成聚合物层,以及,通过对该聚合物层施加取向调节力,可代替现有的取向膜。通过如此的构成,由于并无取向控制层夹在基板与密封材料之间的情况,因此能够避免液晶显示装置中的上述剥离的问题,此外,能够减轻来自外部环境的水份渗入且抑制显示不良的产生。针对该取向控制层进一步进行了深入研究的结果,发现到:通过使偏振光吸收性单体成为具有含有桂皮酰基(cinnamoyl)的偏振光吸收性骨架、和至少两个反应性官能基者,满足偏振光吸收性单体所需的难以兼容的条件,即,容易溶解于液晶层中,且容易相分离。此外,使多官能的偏振光吸收性单体聚合,由此能够形成网眼状结构的单体,且能够形成难以溶解于液晶中、且对来自外部的冲击等难以变形的稳定的取向控制层。再者,所述的取向控制层,也可适用于所谓的水平取向模式及垂直取向模式的、所需的预倾角大不相同的两种模式的任一者中。由此,想出可完全地解决上述课题的内容,并达成本发明。
即,本发明的一方式也可以是一种液晶显示装置,具备:上下基板;在该上下基板之间、包含液晶分子的液晶层及封入该液晶层的密封材料;以及取向控制层,其在该上下基板及该液晶层之间,对液晶分子进行取向控制;该上下基板与该密封材料直接接触;该取向控制层包含具有源自偏振光吸收性单体的结构的聚合物,所述偏振光吸收性单体具有偏振光吸收性骨架、和至少两个反应性官能基;该偏振光吸收性骨架含有桂皮酰基骨架。本说明书中,具有源自具有偏振光吸收性骨架和至少两个反应性官能基的偏振光吸收性单体的结构的聚合物,是指具有该至少两个反应性官能基进行反应而形成的结构的聚合物的意思,例如为作为反应性官能基的反应性不饱和键为单键并与其他的单体键合而成的结构。此外,上下基板是结合了实施方式中的“上侧基板”与“下侧基板”的两者。
本发明的另一方式也可以是一种液晶显示装置的制造方法,包含:工序(1),在使用密封材料粘合的一对基板之间,形成包含液晶分子及偏振光吸收性单体的液晶层;工序(2),对该液晶层照射偏振光,使该偏振光吸收性单体二聚化而从该液晶层相分离,在该一对基板与该液晶层之间形成层;工序(3),若将包含于该液晶层中的液晶分子的、向列相与各向同性相之间的相变温度设为TN-I,则在该液晶层的温度已成为TN-I以上的状态下对该层照射偏振光,形成对液晶分子进行取向控制的取向控制层;该偏振光吸收性单体具有偏振光吸收性骨架、和至少两个的反应性官能基;该偏振光吸收性骨架含有桂皮酰基骨架。
本发明的液晶显示装置,即使为窄边框,密封材料也难以从上下基板剥离,具有稳定的取向控制层,此外,也能够实现水平取向模式的液晶显示装置。本发明的液晶显示装置的制造方法,是能够简便地制造本发明的液晶显示装置的方法,适合于工业化大量生产本发明的液晶显示装置时。

具体实施方式
虽然在以下揭示实施方式,针对本发明参照附图更详细地进行说明,但是本发明并不只限定于这些实施方式。此外,各实施方式的构成,在不脱离本发明的要旨的范围内可以适当地组合,也可以变更。
本说明书中,偏振光吸收性单体是指在分子中包含偏振光吸收性官能基的单体。本发明涉及的偏振光吸收性单体,由于含有桂皮酰基骨架,因此溶解于液晶中,且通过对液晶层照射偏振紫外光以进行二聚化而从液晶层相分离,以特定的条件经二聚化者具有在基板上堆积的特性。作为所述特定的条件,可举出例如温度变化、向无机化合物的吸附。此外,偏振光吸收性官能基是指在被照射紫外光及/或可见光波长区域所含有的特定波长的偏振光时吸收偏振光的官能基。
此外,将使液晶分子在无施加电压时相对于基板的主面大致水平的方向取向的模式,也称为水平取向模式。大致水平是指例如液晶分子的预倾角相对于基板的主面为0°以上且5°以下。将使液晶分子在无施加电压时相对于基板的主面大致垂直的方向取向的模式,也称为垂直取向模式。大致垂直是指例如液晶分子的预倾角相对于基板的主面为85°以上且90°以下。此外,室温是指15°以上且30°以下的温度。在预倾角的测定中,使用中央精机社制的晶体旋转法(型号:OMS–AF2)。
以下的实施方式,虽然主要说明关于实现水平取向模式的情况,但是本发明也可适用于实现垂直取向模式的情况。
(实施方式一)
图1是表示实施方式一的液晶显示装置的剖面示意图。如图1所示,液晶显示装置1具备:下侧基板10、与下侧基板10相对向的上侧基板20、配置在两基板之间的液晶层30及密封材料S、以及取向控制层19、29。取向控制层19配置在下侧基板10的玻璃基板11与液晶层30之间。取向控制层29配置在上侧基板20的玻璃基板21与液晶层30之间。密封材料S于之间不夹取向控制层19、29,而与下侧基板10的玻璃基板11、以及上侧基板20的玻璃基板21直接接触。密封材料与基板直接接触是指密封材料于之间不夹取向控制层,而与基板所具备的玻璃基板或TFT阵列、滤光器直接接触。液晶显示装置也可以进一步在下侧基板10及上侧基板20的与液晶层30侧相反侧具有一对偏振光板。
下侧基板10具有作为支撑基板的玻璃基板11、适当地配置在玻璃基板11上的薄膜晶体管元件等(TFT阵列基板13),进一步在覆盖TFT阵列基板13的绝缘膜上的一部分,于相同层或不同层具有像素电极15p及共通电极(未图示)。在此,在相同层具有像素电极及共通电极是表示像素电极及共通电极在这些的液晶层30侧及/或与液晶层30侧相反侧中与共通的部件(例如,液晶层30、绝缘膜等)接触。作为像素电极及共通电极的材料,可合适地使用ITO(Indium Tin Oxide:铟锡氧化物)或IZO(Indium Zinc Oxide:铟锌氧化物)。上侧基板20不具有电极,而具有作为支撑基板的玻璃基板21、适当地配置在玻璃基板21上的滤光器层CF等(也可以在相同层包含黑矩阵BM)。此外,下侧基板10及上侧基板20不具有现有的取向膜(例如图9中的取向膜717、727)。
在实施方式一的液晶显示装置,与现有的液晶显示装置不同,取向膜与密封材料粘合的部分实质上不存在,密封材料直接接触基板。因此,能够提高密封材料与基板的粘合强度,且能够实现即使为窄边框,密封材料也难以从上下基板剥离的液晶显示装置。此外,实施方式一的液晶显示装置,由于取向控制层不与外部环境接触,因此也不会有水份等从与外部环境接触的取向膜剖面渗入的情况。
取向控制层19、29是对液晶分子进行取向控制者,是被添加到液晶层30中的、具有偏振光吸收性骨架与至少两个反应性官能基的偏振光吸收性单体从液晶层30相分离、聚合而形成者。根据取向控制层19、29,能够实现水平取向模式。
对于上述偏振光吸收性单体(以下,也简称为单体)被要求对液晶的溶解性。
单体对液晶的溶解度,大大地被核(core)部(中心部分)的结构影响。一般被使用于光取向膜的单体的核部具有光反应基,通过光反应进行取向。除了通过偏振光光反应来诱发分子取向的偶氮苯基之外,作为具有光交联性者,可使用肉桂酸基、查耳酮(Chalcone)基、香豆素(Coumarin)基、蒽(Anthracene)基等。但是,具有偶氮系的光官能基的单体几乎不溶解于液晶。又在导致二聚化的材料系中,蒽系在液晶中的溶解度低,且仅0.1质量%程度以下的量溶解于液晶中。另一方面,具有桂皮酰基骨架(–C6H5–CH=CH–CO–)的材料与液晶的相溶性佳。
在具有桂皮酰基骨架的化合物中,以下述式表示的肉桂酸具有一个苯环,若使该苯环键合两个以上的反应性官能基,则能够成为本发明涉及的单体。

其中,查耳酮基骨架具有两个苯环,易于多官能化。在所述单体为具有查耳酮基骨架的二官能系单体的情况,优选为查耳酮基骨架的两个苯环分别键合反应性官能基。
本发明的单体具有偏振光吸收性骨架、和至少两个反应性官能基。优选为:单体的核部为偏振光吸收性骨架,该核部与至少两个反应性官能基直接键合。
(单体的核部)
单体的核部优选为偏振光吸收性骨架。
为了形成通过偏振光容易使液晶分子取向的取向控制层,作为核部的偏振光吸收性骨架含有桂皮酰基骨架。偏振光吸收性骨架优选为查耳酮基骨架。通过查耳酮基骨架的苯环,所述单体成为刚性结构。
由于核部必须为溶解于液晶者,所以无法使用在光取向膜被使用的偶氮系者。
(间隔物部)
所述单体聚合后,形成取向控制层。所谓对液晶分子进行取向控制,是与液晶分子之间的相互作用强,液晶分子因电场的影响而移动时,施加应力以使取向控制层变形。在此,核部与反应性官能基之间存在间隔物(例如,烷基间隔物),若该间隔物长,则取向控制层容易变形。在本发明中,优选为所述单体不具有所述间隔物。例如,优选为单体具有苯环与(甲基)丙烯酸酯基等的反应性官能基直接键合而成的结构。另外,(甲基)丙烯酸酯基是指丙烯酸酯基、甲基丙烯酸酯基或这两者的意思。
(反应性官能基)
所述单体,在只具有一个反应性官能基的情况,当使该单体聚合时,形成碳–碳键一维地连续的直线状的容易变形的聚合物。此外,只具有一个反应性官能基的单体,会有使液晶的电压保持率降低之虞。
在本发明,如所述,由于所述偏振光吸收性单体具有至少两个的反应性官能基,所以使该偏振光吸收性单体聚合时,形成网眼状结构的聚合物,获得难以溶解于液晶且即使对来自外部的冲击等也难以变形的稳定的取向控制层。
反应性官能基优选为具有反应性的不饱和键,更优选为例如(甲基)丙烯酸酯基。例如,所述的单体,优选为具有两个(甲基)丙烯酸酯基。
作为所述单体,优选为具有查耳酮基骨架,构成查耳酮基骨架的苯环直接与甲基丙烯酸甲酯及/或丙烯酸等的反应官能基键合。将其聚合而成者适合作为取向控制层。例如,尤其优选为下述式表示的2–甲基丙烯酸4–{3–[4–(2–甲基–丙烯酰氧基)–苯基]–丙烯酰基}–苯基酯。此单体是构成查耳酮基骨架的两个苯环分别与甲基丙烯酸甲酯基键合而成的结构。

如上述苯环直接与甲基丙烯酸酯或丙烯酸酯键合的分子结构,当照射紫外光时引起光弗赖斯重排(Fries rearrangement)而产生游离基(radical)。通过该游离基开始聚合,由如后述在基板表面堆积的二聚体形成聚合物层。形成聚合物层的聚合物由于分子量大,且为三维性的网眼状结构,因此难以溶解于液晶,在液晶面板即使有来自外部的冲击等也与现有的取向膜同样地稳定,可使液晶分子稳定地取向。
因此,实施方式一的液晶显示装置,是在基板上形成有稳定的取向控制层者,是已解决了由小分子构成的取向控制层的不稳定状态者。
接着,说明关于实施方式一的液晶显示装置的制造方法。
在实施方式一的液晶显示装置的制造方法,优选为使用具有桂皮酰基骨架的二官能系单体作为单体,在构成液晶层的液晶混合物全体100质量%中,混合有0.1~10质量%程度的该单体。若该混合量未达0.1质量%,则在液晶层与基板的界面整面不形成取向控制层,液晶分子的取向控制无法充分地进行。若该混合量超过10质量%,则在经过后置工序之后,在液晶层内残留偏振光吸收性单体的可能性变高,会对可靠性等造成影响。例如,会有析出单体而使液晶面板的显示性能受损之虞。
较优选为该混合量为0.3质量%以上,更优选为1质量%以上。此外,该混合量较优选为5质量%以下。
关于基板,与现有的液晶面板相同,某一方的基板可使用滤光器,另一方的基板可使用具有可通过TFT等的开关元件控制像素电极的电位的结构者。但是,如现有的液晶面板的制造方法那样在基板不涂敷取向膜。
将用以形成密封材料的试剂,涂敷在与某一方的基板的液晶面板对应的区域的外周后,以使该基板与另一方的基板彼此相对向的方式粘合。由此,形成以密封材料密封的空间位于内部的一对基板。使该一对基板的被密封空间成为真空状态后,将用于在该空间注入包含所述单体的液晶混合物的注入口浸入至该液晶混合物,以注入该液晶混合物。
另外,也可以代替如上述方式注入液晶混合物,而在某一方的基板上滴下液晶及所述单体,其后,在真空腔内粘合该基板与另一方的基板。
另外,作为密封材料,可使用热硬化型、紫外光硬化型、或者热硬化及紫外光硬化两用型者。
液晶的注入(或滴下)后,在液晶层的温度为室温(例如20℃)以上、TN-I+5℃以下之间照射偏振紫外光,使已添加的单体二聚化,从液晶层相分离,在基板上堆积而形成二聚物层。另外,将液晶分子的向列相(nematic phase)与各向同性相之间的相变温度(℃)设为TN-I(也称为NI点)。此二聚物层,可作为使液晶分子在已定的方向水平取向的取向控制层而发挥功能。再者,对二聚物层照射偏振紫外光,使二聚物聚合而形成取向控制层。在使与液晶分子的相互作用变小,且以取向控制层变得容易进行取向的方式加热至液晶成为各向同性相的状态(加热至液晶分子的、向列相与各向同性相之间的相变温度TN-I以上的状态)下,对二聚物层照射偏振紫外光。另外,偏振紫外光的照射,自未配置有滤光器的下侧基板进行。其后,当在室温冷却时,液晶分子通过取向控制层而进行取向。在对二聚物层照射偏振紫外光时的液晶层的温度,优选为所使用的液晶材料的TN-I以上。此外,该温度优选为TN-I+5℃以下。此外,即便液晶面板的温度提高至TN-I以上且TN-I+5℃以下的范围,也不会有二聚物层溶解于液晶的情况。其原因为,通过偏振紫外光的照射,在层内形成网眼状结构的聚合物,而不会溶解在液晶层中。
作为液晶,可使用具有正的介电各向异性(dielectric anisotropy)者、或具有负的介电各向异性的任一者。此外,液晶分子的TN-I并无特别限制,虽然可以使用具有任意的TN-I的液晶,但是在照射偏振紫外光时,有时会将液晶层加热至TN-I以上的温度,因此优选为TN-I较密封材料的玻璃转化点低。
聚合物形成后,使液晶面板的温度下降至室温,适当地配置偏振光板、背光等的部件。其结果,可以获得一种横向电场方式的液晶显示装置,所述横向电场方式的液晶显示装置是使液晶分子在无施加电压时在相对于下侧基板以及上侧基板的主面大致水平的方向取向。
根据以上,实施方式一的液晶显示装置,不仅可合适地使用作为垂直取向模式的液晶显示装置,也可合适地使用作为水平取向模式的液晶显示装置。在水平取向模式中,IPS模式、FFS模式等成为主流。实施方式一的液晶显示装置,除了能够实现IPS模式、FFS模式之外,也能够实现ECB(Electrically Controlled Birefringence)模式。在以下,更详细地说明关于水平取向模式的液晶显示装置的电极结构。
图2是表示IPS模式的液晶显示装置的像素结构的例子的平面示意图。图3是表示对应于图2中的线段A1–A2的部分的剖面的剖面示意图。图4是表示对应于图2中的线段B1–B2的部分的剖面的剖面示意图。
在图2所示的IPS模式的液晶显示装置,在下侧基板中,设置源极总线SL及栅极总线GL,像素电极115p及共通电极115c设置在不同的层。另外,也可以代替像素电极及共通电极设置在不同的层,而设置在相同的层。此外,栅极总线GL与共通电极115c设置在相同层。像素电极115p与共通电极115c被图案化,在图2中构成一对梳齿电极。如图3所示,IPS模式的液晶显示装置,具有:下侧基板110、与下侧基板110相对向的上侧基板120、以及配置在两基板间的液晶层130。下侧基板110具有玻璃基板111及取向控制层119;上侧基板120具有玻璃基板121、滤光器层CF及取向控制层129。此外,像素电极115p设置在与共通电极115c不同的层。此外,如图4所示,IPS模式的液晶显示装置,具有源极电极SE、漏极电极DE及半导体层SC。
图5是表示FFS模式的液晶显示装置的像素结构的例子的平面示意图。图6是表示FFS模式的液晶显示装置的例子的剖面示意图。如图5及图6所示,FFS模式的液晶显示装置具有下侧基板210、与下侧基板210相对向的上侧基板220、以及配置在两基板间的液晶层230。下侧基板210具有玻璃基板211、栅极电极GE、半导体层SC、漏极电极DE、源极电极SE、共通电极215c、像素电极215p及取向控制层219;上侧基板220具有玻璃基板211、滤光器层CF及取向控制层229。在实现FFS模式的情形时,作为下侧基板210,只要使用在不同的层具有像素电极及共通电极的基板即可。于该情形,在像素电极215p与共通电极215c之间配置绝缘膜(未图示)。共通电极215c也可以未被图案化。
(实施方式二)
图7是表示实施方式二的液晶显示装置的剖面示意图。
实施方式一涉及在上侧基板设有滤光器及黑矩阵的液晶显示装置。由于滤光器使紫外光几乎不透过,黑矩阵也使紫外光不透过,因此用于单体聚合的紫外光照射是自未配置有滤光器的下侧基板(阵列基板)侧进行。
在下侧基板,由构成TFT阵列的金属构成的布线等造成的遮光区域多。因此,在利用紫外光照射进行的液晶中的单体聚合需要时间。此外,由于遮光部难以形成取向控制层,因此若遮光的宽度广而无法产生取向控制层的区域产生时,恐有显示区域(像素电极上)的液晶分子产生取向不良的情况。
因此,在实施方式二中,将滤光器CF设置在下侧基板310。实施方式二的液晶显示装置,如图7所示,具有下侧基板310、与下侧基板310相对向的上侧基板320、配置在两基板间的液晶层330,下侧基板310及上侧基板320分别具有玻璃基板311及321。在下侧基板310的TFT阵列基板313上形成滤光器CF,在滤光器CF上形成像素电极315p。
实施方式二的上侧基板320,没有遮蔽紫外光的结构物。因此,可从上侧基板320侧很有效率地进行用于使液晶中的单体聚合的紫外光照射。此外,因为没有成为阴影的部分,所以容易在基板全体形成取向控制层。
实施方式二的液晶显示装置及其制造方法,除了代替将滤光器CF设置在上侧基板320而将其设置在下侧基板310,可从上侧基板320侧进行用以使液晶中的单体聚合的紫外光照射以外,与实施方式一相同。即便是如上述将滤光器设置在下侧基板310的液晶显示装置中,通过取向控制层319、329不仅能实现垂直取向模式,也能实现水平取向模式。
(实施方式三)
图8是表示实施方式三的液晶显示装置的剖面示意图。
在实施方式三的液晶显示装置中,以防止来自滤光器的杂质透过为目的,在滤光器CF进行外涂层(overcoating)。由于在将密封材料直接粘合于基板时外涂层424与密封材料S的粘合力较弱,因此外涂层424不配置在密封材料S之下(例如,参照日本特开2010–8534号公报)。
如图8所示,实施方式三的液晶显示装置具有下侧基板410、与下侧基板410相对向的上侧基板420、以及配置在两基板间的液晶层430。下侧基板410具有玻璃基板411、TFT阵列基板413、像素电极415p及取向控制层419;上侧基板420具有玻璃基板421、滤光器层CF、外涂层424及取向控制层429。实施方式三的液晶显示装置,除了在滤光器层CF上配置有外涂层424以外,与实施方式一的液晶显示装置相同。实施方式三的液晶显示装置,在防止来自滤光器的杂质的透过、并且确保已窄边框化时的密封粘合强度上很有效。
也可以使用所述的各实施方式的液晶显示装置,来制造VA、垂直ECB、垂直TN模式等的垂直取向模式的液晶显示装置。也在如此的液晶显示装置中,由于密封材料在与上下基板之间不夹着现有的取向膜,而可直接与上侧基板及下侧基板接触,因此能够制造即使为窄边框也难以剥离的液晶显示装置。
(比较方式一)
在使用于光取向膜的材料系中,偶氮苯系被广为人知(例如,K.Ichimura,Y.Suzuki,and T.Seki,Langmuir,4.1214(1988))。
如所述的实施方式一,在使多官能单体溶解于液晶,使其光聚合而形成取向控制层,且使用该取向控制层使液晶取向的情况,例如想出以下述化学式表示的化合物。

为了溶解于液晶,优选为分子小,且较佳为核部与反应性官能基之间的烷基间隔物部短(或没有),以使聚合后的聚合物即使施加压力,形状也难以改变。因此,所述分子仅含一个偶氮苯,且成为在构成该偶氮苯的苯环直接键合有甲基丙烯酸酯基的形状。
虽尝试使所述化合物溶解于液晶,但是相对于液晶层全体仅未达0.05质量%程度的量溶解。因此,无法在使液晶分子取向的目的上使用。
[附记]
以下举出本发明的液晶显示装置的优选的方式的例子。各例子也可以在不脱离本发明的要旨的范围内适当地组合。
在本发明中,所述一对基板与所述密封材料,不经由现有的取向膜而直接接触。所述一对基板,不具有现有的取向膜,且作为构成与所述密封材料直接接触的所述一对基板的表层的部件,可举出支撑基板(例如,玻璃基板)、电极、绝缘膜等。从使粘合强度变更高的观点而言,优选为玻璃基板与密封材料直接接触的构成。
所述偏振光吸收性骨架优选为查耳酮基骨架。
所述反应性官能基优选为含有反应性的不饱和键,更优选为含有反应性的双键。该反应性的双键更优选为碳–碳双键。
所述反应性官能基优选为(甲基)丙烯酸酯基。
所述取向控制层优选为使液晶分子在无施加电压时相对于所述上下基板的主面大致水平的方向上取向。由此,能够实现水平取向模式的液晶显示装置。虽然本发明的液晶显示装置为水平取向模式的液晶显示装置,但是其为本发明优选的方式之一。水平取向模式例如可以是IPS模式、FFS模式、ECB模式。液晶的介电各向异性的正负可根据各个模式选择最适合者。
所述取向控制层也可以是使液晶分子在无施加电压时相对于所述一对基板的主面大致垂直的方向上取向者。由此,能够实现垂直取向模式的液晶显示装置。本发明的液晶显示装置为垂直取向模式的液晶显示装置,又也为本发明优选的方式之一。垂直取向模式例如也可以是垂直ECB模式、四域垂直ECB模式、TBA(Transverse Bent Alignment)模式、VA模式、MVA(Multi-domain Vertical Alignment)模式、或四域垂直TN(Twisted Nematic)模式。液晶的介电各向异性的正负可根据各个模式选择最适合者。
此外,所述偏振光吸收性单体可以是具有羧基(Carboxyl)、羟基(Hydroxyl)、或胺基(Amino)者,其中优选为具有羧基者。
包含于所述液晶层中的液晶材料,可以是具有正的介电各向异性者。由此,由于在施加电压时液晶分子的长轴沿着电力线取向,因此取向控制变得更容易,能够实现进一步的高速响应性。
在以下,举出本发明的液晶显示装置的制造方法的优选的方式的例子。各例子也可在不脱离本发明的要旨的范围内适当地组合。
本发明也可以是一种液晶显示装置的制造方法,包含:工序(1),在使用密封材料粘合的一对基板之间,形成包含液晶分子及偏振光吸收性单体的液晶层;工序(2),对该液晶层照射偏振光,使该偏振光吸收性单体二聚化而从该液晶层相分离,在该一对基板与该液晶层之间形成层;以及工序(3),若将包含于该液晶层中的液晶分子的、向列相与各向同性相之间的相变温度设为TN-I,则在该液晶层的温度已成为TN-I以上的状态下对该层照射偏振光,形成对液晶分子进行取向控制的取向控制层;该偏振光吸收性单体具有偏振光吸收性骨架、和至少两个的反应性官能基;该偏振光吸收性骨架含有桂皮酰基骨架。
在本发明中,作为在所述工序(3)照射的偏振光,可合适地使用偏振紫外光,尤其可合适地使用直线偏振紫外光。此外,所述偏振光的照射条件可根据所述偏振光吸收性的单体的组成而适当地进行设定。
所述工序(3)也可以是在已使所述液晶层的温度成为TN-I以上且TN-I+5℃以下的状态下对所述层照射偏振光来进行。
所述工序(1)~(3)也可以是不改变所述液晶层的温度而以固定温度来进行。例如,优选为将所述工序(1)~(3)中的所述液晶层的温度以在TN-I以上且TN-I+5℃以下的温度范围内不改变的方式设为固定温度。由此,可简便地制造本发明的液晶显示装置。
所述工序(1)可以在已使所述液晶层的温度成为TN-I以上的状态下进行,所述工序(2)也可以是将所述液晶层的温度提高至TN-I以上未达TN-I来进行。由此,利用如下的效果,即,所述偏振光吸收性单体以TN-I以上的温度溶解于所述液晶材料,以未达TN-I的温度从所述液晶层相分离,从而能够合适地形成所述取向控制层。
所述工序(2)也可以是使所述偏振光吸收性单体吸附于构成所述一对基板的表层的无机化合物上来进行。由此,利用所述偏振光吸收性单体吸附于所述无机化合物的效果,能够合适地形成所述取向控制层。

Claims (4)
1.一种液晶显示装置,其特征在于,具备:
上下基板;
在该上下基板之间、包含液晶分子的液晶层及封入该液晶层的密封材料;以及
取向控制层,其在该上下基板及该液晶层之间,对液晶分子进行取向控制;
该上下基板与该密封材料直接接触;
该取向控制层包含具有源自偏振光吸收性单体的结构的聚合物,所述偏振光吸收性单体具有偏振光吸收性骨架、与至少两个反应性官能基;
该偏振光吸收性骨架含有桂皮酰基骨架,
该反应性官能基为(甲基)丙烯酸酯基,
该偏振光吸收性单体具有该(甲基)丙烯酸酯基直接键合在苯环上而成的结构,
所述取向控制层是将溶解于所述液晶层中的所述偏振光吸收性单体二聚化,将所述液晶层的温度设定至所述液晶分子的向列相与各向同性相之间的相变温度即TN-1以上,并对所述液晶层照射偏振光形成的层。
2.如权利要求1所述的液晶显示装置,其特征在于,该偏振光吸收性骨架为查耳酮基骨架。
3.如权利要求1或2所述的液晶显示装置,其特征在于,该取向控制层使液晶分子在无施加电压时相对于该上下基板的主面大致水平的方向上取向。
4.一种液晶显示装置的制造方法,其特征在于,包含:
工序(1),在使用密封材料粘合的一对基板之间,形成包含液晶分子及偏振光吸收性单体的液晶层;
工序(2),对该液晶层照射偏振光,使该偏振光吸收性单体二聚化而从该液晶层相分离,在该一对基板与该液晶层之间形成层;
工序(3),若将包含于该液晶层中的液晶分子的、向列相与各向同性相之间的相变温度设为TN-I,则在该液晶层的温度已成为TN-I以上的状态下对该层照射偏振光,形成对液晶分子进行取向控制的取向控制层;
该偏振光吸收性单体具有偏振光吸收性骨架、和至少两个反应性官能基;
该偏振光吸收性骨架含有桂皮酰基骨架。
