Abstract

The present invention discloses a grease composition comprising a polyalphaolefin and a thickener which is a fatty acid calcium salt. The composition is suitable for use at the seal-metal interface in a sealed bearing.

Description

Grease composition
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a grease composition and to the use of said grease composition for sealing bearings.
Background
Sealed bearings are used in many different types of machines. The seal prevents the ingress of dirt and water which could damage the bearing and impair the function of the machine. Typical seal materials include acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) and Fluoroelastomers (FKM). Grease is provided at the seal contact points to extend the life of the seal. There is significant friction at the seal-metal interface, which can lead to heat generation and efficiency loss. The present inventors sought to provide a grease composition that can be used to reduce the friction at the seal-metal interface and thereby improve the efficiency of sealing bearings.
Disclosure of Invention
The present inventors have unexpectedly discovered that the combination of a low viscosity polyalphaolefin base oil with a calcium thickener can provide a grease that specifically produces low friction at the seal-metal interface. Accordingly, the present invention provides a grease composition comprising from 40 wt% to 90 wt% of a first base oil component which is a polyalphaolefin and has a dynamic viscosity at 100 ℃ of between 1mm2S to 5mm2(ii)/s, wherein weight percentages are based on the weight of the grease composition; and comprises thatC13-C21A thickener of a fatty acid calcium salt.
In another aspect, the invention provides the use of a grease composition for sealing at a seal-metal interface in a bearing, wherein the grease composition comprises a base oil and a thickener, wherein the base oil comprises from 40 wt% to 90 wt% of a first base oil which is a polyalphaolefin and has a dynamic viscosity at 100 ℃ of between 1mm2S to 5mm2(ii)/s, wherein the weight percentages are by weight of the grease composition; and contains is C13-C21A thickener of a fatty acid calcium salt.
Detailed Description
The grease composition comprises from 40 wt% to 90 wt% of a first base oil component which is a polyalphaolefin and has a dynamic viscosity at 100 ℃ of between 1mm2S to 5mm2Is between/s. The grease composition may comprise other base oils, but preferably the first base oil component comprises at least 50 wt.%, and preferably at least 80 wt.% of the total base oil (based on the total weight of base oils in the grease composition).
The thickener in the grease composition is C13-C21Fatty acid calcium salts, and preferably hydrogenated castor oil fatty acid calcium salts. The amount of thickener is preferably from 2 to 18 wt.%, more preferably from 2 to 14 wt.%, based on the weight of the grease composition.
The grease composition of the present invention may further comprise antioxidants, rust inhibitors, oiliness agents, extreme pressure additives, anti-wear agents, solid lubricants, metal deactivators, polymers, detergents, and other additives.
Antioxidants include, for example, 2, 6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol, 2, 6-di-tert-butyl-P-cresol, P' -dioctyldiphenylamine, N-phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine and phenothiazine.
Rust inhibitors include paraffin oxides, metal carboxylates, metal sulfonates, carboxylic esters, sulfonic esters, succinic esters, sorbitan esters, and various amine salts.
Oiliness agents, extreme pressure additives, and antiwear agents include, for example, zinc sulfurized dialkyldithiophosphate, zinc sulfurized diaryldithiophosphate, zinc sulfurized dialkyldithiocarbamate, zinc sulfurized diaryldithiocarbamate, molybdenum sulfurized dialkyldithiophosphate, molybdenum sulfurized diaryldithiophosphate, molybdenum sulfurized dialkyldithiocarbamate, molybdenum sulfurized diaryldithiocarbamate, organomolybdenum complex, sulfurized olefin, triphenyl phosphate, triphenyl phosphorothioate, tricresyl phosphate, other phosphate esters, and sulfurized fats and oils.
The solid lubricant includes, for example, molybdenum disulfide, graphite, boron nitride, melamine cyanurate, PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), tungsten disulfide, mica, graphite fluoride, and the like.
Metal deactivators include, for example, N' -disalicylidene-1, 2-diaminopropane, benzotriazole, benzimidazole, benzothiazole, and thiadiazole.
The grease composition may be manufactured using standard grease manufacturing routes.
The grease composition of the present invention is suitable for use at the seal-metal interface in a sealed bearing. The seal is suitably made of a material such as acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), hydrotreated acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (HNBR), or Fluoroelastomer (FKM). The bearing will contain a lubricant and the grease composition of the present invention should be applied in such a way that the grease composition of the present invention is not contaminated by the lubricant.
Examples of the invention
The invention is explained in further detail below with the aid of examples and comparative examples, without the invention being restricted in any way by these examples.
Greases were prepared by adding base oil and fatty acid to a kettle, heating to 85-90 ℃ (at 3 ℃/min) and stirring at 100 rpm. Calcium hydroxide in powder form was added followed by water. The kettle was closed and heated to 135 deg.C (at 2 deg.C/min). The contents were stirred at 100rpm and the wall temperature limit of the kettle was set to 140 ℃. After about 40 minutes after 135 ℃ had been reached, the kettle was vented. Additional base oil was heated to 80 ℃ and then added to the kettle by a pump. The contents were stirred at 150rpm for 5 minutes and the product temperature was maintained between 130 ℃ and 135 ℃. A nitrogen line was connected to the kettle and the contents were exposed to a nitrogen flow for 15 minutes, thereby dehydrating the sample. The contents were allowed to cool to 100 deg.C (at 2 deg.C/min) with stirring at 100 rpm. The additives are added at 80 ℃ or lower, diluted with additional base oil. After addition of the additive, the contents were stirred at 100rpm for 1 minute. The contents were then cooled to 50-60 deg.C (controlled by wall temperature setting: 20 deg.C at 5 deg.C/min and stirring at 100 rpm). Degassing was started at 70 ℃ using-150 mbar vacuum for 10 minutes and stirring at 50 rpm. The product was homogenized at 1X 300 bar.
All formulations are summarized in table 1 below, with amounts given as weight percentages based on the total weight of the formulation.
TABLE 1
Figure BDA0001373163690000041
PAO 2.0 is a polyalphaolefin and has a viscosity of 2.0cSt at 100 ℃. XHVI 3.0 and XHVI 4.0 are base oils prepared by the Fischer-Tropsch process and obtained from Shell (Shell). The viscosity of XHVI 3.0 at 100 ℃ is 3.0cSt and the viscosity of XHVI 4.0 at 100 ℃ is 4.0 cSt. HCOFA is hydrogenated castor oil fatty acid. In each of the examples and comparative examples, the additive package was the same.
Grease was applied to the NBR seal. The sealed bearing was run for 24 hours, and then the friction force was measured.
The results are given in table 2:
TABLE 2
Friction horizontal (Ncm)
Example 1 1.88
Comparative example 1 3.06
Comparative example 2 3.12
The grease composition of the present invention, wherein the base oil is a polyalphaolefin, exhibits significantly reduced friction compared to the grease composition of the comparative example, wherein the base oil has a similar viscosity but is made by the fischer-tropsch process.
