技术领域
本发明涉及一种等离子显示设备及其驱动方法。
背景技术
等离子显示板(PDP)是使用气体放电产生的等离子体来显示字符或图像的平板显示器。该等离子显示板根据其尺寸而包括以矩阵图案排列的多于几十到几百万的像素。
图1图示了形成帧的子场的传统安排。在图1中,一帧被划分为8个子场SF1到SF8。
如图1所示,等离子显示设备由一帧的多个子场驱动,并具有相应的亮度加权值。每个子场具有寻址周期A1到A8、以及维持周期S1到S8。
在这8个子场SF1到SF8之间,放电单元在一些子场中被导通。这些子场的权重之和确定要导通的放电单元的灰度等级。如图1所示,子场SF1到SF8按照权重的递增次序排列或按照权重的递减次序排列。
寻址周期A1到A8用于选择导通/关断单元(即要导通或关断的单元)。维持周期S1到S8用于引起用于在寻址单元上实际显示图像的放电。这里,维持周期S1到S8的长度对应于子场SF1到SF8的权重,并且在图1中,假设维持周期S1到S8的长度分别为1T、2T、4T、8T、16T、32T、64T、和128T。另外,在寻址周期A1到A8之前,可提供用于初始化该放电单元的复位周期(未示出)。
一般来说,在全国电视系统委员会(NTSC)方案中,一帧的时间为16.67ms(=1/60秒),因为显示设备以60Hz的频率工作,而在逐行倒相(PAL)方案中,一帧的时间为20ms(=1/50秒),因为显示设备以50Hz的频率工作。
因为在PAL方案中一帧的时间相对长,所以当子场安排如图1所示时,人眼能识别一帧,并将因此察觉到图像闪烁。换言之,PAL方案中可能发生闪烁现象。在图1中,由于识别为最亮的最大权重值的子场被安排在一帧的末尾,所以人能察觉到每20ms的图像变化。然而,由于人眼可识别该时间间隔,所以实际看到所显示的图像是闪烁的。
在寻址周期中,由于具有固定宽度的扫描脉冲被依次施加到所有扫描电极,所以需要为寻址周期分配固定时间。然而,因为一帧的时间是有限的,所以寻址周期的时间减少,并因此可能不正确地执行寻址操作。
发明内容
根据本发明,提供了一种等离子显示设备及其驱动方法,用于降低PAL方案中的闪烁,并用于允许稳定的寻址放电。
根据本发明实施例的一种等离子显示板的示范驱动方法通过被划分为具有相应权重值的多个子场的帧而驱动该等离子显示板。这里,该等离子显示板包括多个第一电极、多个第二电极、以及沿着与第一电极和第二电极交叉的方向形成的多个第三电极,并具有低于第一频率的第二频率的垂直同步信号。该方法包括以下步骤。

根据本发明提及的壁电荷指的是在与放电单元的电极靠近的壁(例如介电层)上形成和积累的电荷。尽管壁电荷实际上没有接触电极,但是之后仍将该壁电荷描述为“形成”或“积累”在电极上。壁电压指的是通过壁电荷在单元壁上形成的电位差。

现在参考图2,将详细描述根据本发明第一示范实施例的等离子显示设备的结构。该等离子显示设备包括PDP 100、控制器200、寻址电极驱动器300、扫描电极驱动器400、和维持电极驱动器500。

参考图3,将更详细地描述根据本发明第一示范实施例的PAL方案中的子场安排。一帧被划分为第一和第二组,并且具有相对较大权重值的子场被扩散到这两个所划分的组中。换言之,控制器200将具有最大权重值的两个子场扩散并分配到所划分的两组中。在图3中,子场SF1、SF3、SF5、SF7和SF9被分配到第一组,而子场SF2、SF4、SF6、SF8和SF10被分配到第二组。第一组和第二组中的每个子场具有可相比(comparable)的寻址周期Ap1。由于PAL方案具有比NTSC方案长3.33ms的一帧时间,所以可分配更多的子场,如图3所示。
此外,因为具有较大权重值的子场被扩散到两组中,所以呈现给人眼的图像每10ms发生改变。该时间间隔几乎不被人眼察觉,并因此减轻了闪烁现象。
一般来说,通过在两个电极之间施加电压而进行的放电在施加该电压之后有延迟地发生。在寻址周期中,应该在扫描脉冲和寻址脉冲的宽度内进行寻址放电。换言之,该寻址放电受放电延迟时间影响。
然而,当如图3所示安排子场时,距离前一子场的时间距离变得相对较长。所以,由前一子场的维持放电形成的点火微粒(priming particle)随着时间的过去而熄灭,并且在下一子场中,由于寻址放电的延迟而使得几乎不发生寻址放电。在具有低权重值的子场中(即子场SF1和子场SF2),由于维持放电的小尺寸而使得维持放电所形成的点火微粒不充足。随后,寻址放电的延迟变得更大,并且寻址放电几乎不发生。其后,参考图4和图5,将更详细地描述用于稳定寻址放电的示范实施例。
图4图示了根据本发明第二示范实施例的PAL方案中的子场安排。
在PAL方案中,一帧的时间是20ms,其比NTSC方案中的一帧时间多3.33ms。如图4所示,根据本发明的第二示范实施例,该残留时间3.33ms被分配到寻址周期。换言之,根据第二示范实施例的寻址周期Ap2变得比图3所示根据第一示范实施例的寻址周期Ap1长。由此,较长的寻址周期允许寻址脉冲宽度较长,并所以可降低寻址放电延迟。
图5图示了图4所示子场的驱动波形。
如图5所示,在复位周期的上升周期期间,扫描电极Y的电压从Vs增加到Vset,同时将维持电极X保持为0V。然后,在扫描电极Y和寻址电极A之间以及扫描电极Y和维持电极X之间发生弱复位放电。因此,在扫描电极Y上形成负(-)壁电荷,而在维持电极X和寻址电极A上形成正(+)壁电荷。
在复位周期的下降周期期间,扫描电极Y的电压从Vs逐渐减小到负电压Vnf,同时将寻址电极A保持为Ve。在扫描电极Y的电压的减小的时候,在扫描电极Y和维持电极X之间以及扫描电极Y和寻址电极A之间发生弱放电。因此,在扫描电极Y上形成的负(-)壁电荷以及在维持电极X和寻址电极A上形成的正(+)壁电荷被消除,并且放电单元被初始化。
接下来,在寻址周期中,具有电压VscL的扫描脉冲和具有电压Va的寻址脉冲被分别施加到扫描电极Y和寻址电极A,以便选择要导通的单元。没有被选择的扫描电极Y被以比电压VscL高的电压VscH偏置,并且参考电压被施加到要导通的单元的寻址电极。然后,由于寻址电压Va和扫描电压VscL之间的差以及在寻址电极A和扫描电极Y中形成的壁电压,而使得发生寻址放电。因此,在扫描电极Y上形成正(+)壁电荷,而在维持电极X上形成负(-)壁电荷。在寻址电极A上也形成负(-)壁电荷。这里,扫描脉冲宽度T1可以更长,并且可以在寻址脉冲宽度内执行寻址放电。所以,可稳定地执行寻址放电。
随后,在维持周期中,具有相反相位的高电平电压(图5中的Vs)和低电平电压(图5中的0V)的维持放电脉冲被施加到扫描电极Y和维持电极X。更详细地,当电压Vs被施加到扫描电极Y时,0V被施加到维持电极X,并且当电压Vs被施加到维持电极X时,0V被施加到扫描电极Y。由于通过寻址周期中的寻址放电而在扫描电极Y和维持电极X之间形成壁电压,所以由该壁电压和电压Vs而在扫描电极Y和维持电极X之间发生放电。
其后,维持放电脉冲按照与对应于子场的权重值的数目一样的频率被施加到扫描电极Y和维持电极X。
根据本发明的示范实施例,当在PAL方案中驱动等离子显示设备时,可降低闪烁,并可执行稳定的寻址操作。
尽管已结合当前被认为是实际示范实施例的实施例而描述了本发明,但是应理解,本发明不限于所公开的实施例,相反,本发明意欲覆盖在所附权利要求的精神和范围内包括的各种变化和等价配置。

Claims (6)

1. 一种等离子显示器的驱动方法,该等离子显示器具有多个第一电极、多个第二电极、以及沿着与第一电极和第二电极交叉的方向形成的多个第三电极,并具有低于第一频率的第二频率的垂直同步信号,该方法通过将一帧划分为具有相应权重值的多个子场而驱动等离子显示板,该方法包括,在寻址周期中:
依次施加扫描脉冲到第一电极;和
向扫描脉冲施加到的第一电极上形成的多个放电单元中的要导通的放电单元的第三电极施加寻址脉冲,
其中根据第一频率的一帧时间和根据第二频率的一帧时间之间的差的至少一部分被分配到寻址脉冲宽度。
2. 根据权利要求1的驱动方法,其中该第一频率是全国电视系统委员会(NTSC)格式的垂直同步频率,该第二频率是逐行倒相(PAL)格式的垂直同步频率。
3. 根据权利要求2的驱动方法,其中一帧被划分为至少第一组和第二组,并且其中多个子场按照权重值大小的顺序被交替分发到第一组和第二组。
4. 一种等离子显示设备,包括:
等离子显示板,其具有多个第一电极、多个第二电极、以及沿着与第一电极和第二电极交叉的方向形成的多个第三电极;
控制器,用于将一帧划分为具有复位周期、寻址周期、维持周期的多个子场,并且在低于第一频率的第二频率的非固有垂直同步信号中,将根据第一频率的一帧时间和根据第二频率的一帧时间之间的差的至少一部分分配到以下寻址脉冲宽度,该寻址脉冲在寻址周期中被施加到要选择的放电单元的第三电极;
驱动电路,用于在寻址周期中分别向要选择的放电单元的第一电极和第三电极施加扫描脉冲和寻址脉冲。
5. 根据权利要求4的等离子显示设备,其中该第一频率是全国电视系统委员会(NTSC)格式的垂直同步频率,该第二频率是逐行倒相(PAL)格式的垂直同步频率。
6. 根据权利要求5的等离子显示设备,其中该控制器将一帧划分为第一组和第二组,并且按照权重值大小的顺序而将多个子场交替分发到所述第一组和第二组。
