Compound jaw fixing device. The object of the present invention is a fixing device with compound jaws.
The appended drawing represents an embodiment of the object of the invention, given by way of example.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a parallel vice; fig. 2 is a section through the axis of the control screw, and FIG. 3 is an end view of the rear part of this embodiment.
The vice shown comprises a fixed part 1, intended to be visc., ÉC on the workbench, by means of bolts passing through holes 2 and 3, and a movable part 4 sliding on part 1 in a slide 5 at the tail dovetail.
The two parts 1 and 4 are connected by the control screw 6 fixed in the movable part 4 and housed in part in a socket 7, connected to the fixed part 1 so as to be able to turn in a bearing provided for this purpose. In the rear end of the sleeve 7 is fixed a nut 8 engaged on the screw 6. By turning the sleeve 7, by means of the rod 9, in one direction or the other, we move aside or approach the part 4 of the head of the screw 6. The two parts 1 and 4 each comprise a series of elements formed of plates 10 respectively 10 'placed one beside the other to form two jaws com- posed. The plates of each jaw have horizontal slides 11, traversed by bolts 12 with clamping nuts 13 making it possible to secure the plates of each jaw to one another.
On the other hand, each plate is provided with a resilient adaptation device comprising a cell 14 in which is engaged .a coil spring 15 fixed to a pin 16 adjoining part 1 respectively 4, which are arranged to form each a kind of box in which the plates 10 respectively 10 'can move horizontally.
When it comes to clamping an object of any contour between the two parts 1 and 4 of the vice with a view to its shaping, these two parts are moved apart from one another by rotating the socket 7 in the direction of loosening the nut 8 placed on the control screw 6. The object is introduced between the two jaws and the nut 8 is tightened on the screw 6 so that the different plates 10 respectively 10 'match exactly the shape of the object. The relative position of one with respect to the other plates of each jaw. is obtained by the pressure of the springs 15. At this moment, the nuts 13 are tightened to immobilize the plates 10 respectively 10 'on the bolts 12 and the jaws will have the same configuration as the contour of the object clamped between the plates.
When the jaws have conformed to the shape of the object, the latter is fixed by tightening the sleeve 7 on the screw 6.
After use, the jaws are loosened, the nuts 13 are released and the plates 10 respectively 10 'return to their original position under the action of the springs 15.
The vice with compound jaws is particularly suitable for clamping objects with a curvilinear or irregular profile because of the possibility of adapting the elements of the jaws to their contour. It is also suitable for working a series of parts with the same profile, the adaptation of the elements of the jaws having to be done only once for the whole series.
The device can also be used for fixing irregularly shaped workpieces, for example on planing, milling, grinding machines etc. The shape of the springs may differ from that shown; they can be for example plates, scream combs etc., the kind differing according to the size of the vice and the use for which it is intended.
