Dispositif thermoionique.
Thermionic device. In thermionic vacuum tubes, as well as in other apparatus using two or more electrodes, one of these is heated and becomes a productive source of electrons, while another electrode, constituting the anode or the electrode. plate, usually remains cold. Under the action of the intensity of the electric field, the electrons coming from the heated electrode move towards the anode, and acquire a high speed. They therefore strike the plate, which, subjected to a veritable bombardment of electrons, heats up.
This fact limits the efficiency and the duration of the apparatus, since excessive heating of the plate produces the formation of gas, and can even lead to the destruction of this plate, which renders the tube unusable.
The object of the invention is a thermionic device comprising two electrodes, a heated cathode and an anode, enclosed in an empty container of air, characterized in that the anode has the shape of a tube communicating with the atmosphere and to allow passage to a refrigerant fluid, cooling the anode. Figs. 1 and 3 show, by way of example, in perspective two embodiments of the invention, certain parts being sectioned. Fig. 2 is a section through the apparatus shown in FIG. 1, following line 2'-2 '. The same figures denote similar parts of the various figures.
According to fig. 1, a glass vessel 1, empty of air, contains three electrodes, a filament 2, a grid 3, and an anode 4, as thermionic devices are ordinarily formed. The anode 4 has the shape of a helical tube extending outside the vessel by its two ends 5 and 6, one of which serves as an inlet for the refrigerant, which after having passed through the tube to the inside of the vase comes out the other end. According to the drawing, the two ends of the anode pass through the vessel at its base, but this arrangement is obviously not obligatory, as the vessel can be arranged in any other way. For example, one of the ends can pass through the wall of the vase at its upper part, while the other end crosses it at its lower part.
This arrangement allows any refrigerant to be introduced inside the hollow anode. The excessive heating of the anode subjected to the bombardment of the electrons coming from the cathode, is thus avoided.
The tube 4 and its ends fi and 6 can be formed of a single metal, as indicated, but since the lower part of the tube, and mainly the part near its ends, plays a very important role. unimportant from the point of view of the functions which the tube fulfills as an electrode, these ends can be considered as serving only as a passage for the refrigerant fluid, and they can be constructed from a material different from that constituting the tube itself. This material, which may be glass, then simply constitutes a passage for the fluid intended to cool the metal part of the tube. The grid 3 is shown in the form of a metallic conductor wound in a helix in the space limited by the anode tube.
The filament is made up of a series of wires connected in parallel, forming a cylindrical network placed in the center of the two helices. However, the filament and the grid can be constructed in other forms. Fig. 2, which is a plan view of the vase shown in FIG. 1, sectioned along the line shows the arrangement of the three electrodes relative to each other. In the case shown in the drawing, the filament and the grid are supported by glass columns 7 and 8 fixed to the base of the tube. As for the anode, it can be constructed sufficiently strong to maintain itself inside the vessel, given its attachment to the wall thereof.
Fig. 3 shows another embodiment of the invention, in which the hollow anode 4, arranged in a sinusoidal shape, is located in a plane placed directly below the grid 3. The ends 5 and 6 of the anode extend through the base of the vessel so that, as in the case of fig. 1, a refrigerant can be easily introduced inside the tube in order to maintain at a determined temperature the anode subjected to the bombardment of the electrons coming from the filament 2. The two other electrodes, the filament and the grid, are of a suitable type and are supported in some way.
In fig. 3, the anode is shown as supporting itself, while the filament and the grid are held respectively by glass columns 9 and 10.
Among the various agents which can be employed as refrigerant fluid for cooling the anode, it has been found that water and oil are two particularly advantageous bodies and the cooling of the anode thus achieved has made it possible to considerably increase the efficiency of thermionic tubes.
