Description
Procedure for. Preparation of the sodium salt of benzylphthalamic acid. The sodium salt of benzylphthalamic acid has hitherto only been known in its aqueous solution. If one tries to obtain it by evaporating it, one obtains a more or less uncleaned preparation, since benzylphthalimide is easily formed again from this salt in aqueous solution, especially when heated.
According to the method of main patent no. 94948, the decomposition of the sodium salt of benzylphthalamic acid is countered during evaporation by adding a small amount of sodium hydroxide to the solution to be evaporated. It has now been found that the decomposition of the sodium salt of benzylphthalamic acid can also be avoided in this way. can if the aqueous solution is evaporated in a sufficiently high vacuum.
The sodium salt of benzylphthalamic acid which dissolves easily in moist air and which crystallizes in matted needles dissolves easily in water and dilute alcohol. It has the property of having a spasmolytic effect despite its solubility in water and is distinguished by its extremely low toxicity; therefore it should be used in therapy.
Example: 255 parts of benzylphthalamic acid (reports from the German Chemical Society 81, 1898, p. 2740) are mixed with water and converted into a neutral solution by gradually adding 144 parts of crystal soda. The filtered solution is evaporated to dryness in vacuo and the dry residue is recrystallized from absolute alcohol.
