Description

Process for the production of grinding and polishing media. The invention relates to a process for the production of grinding and polishing bodies from a mixture of any fiber materials, such as e.g. Wood, pulp or cotton fibers, and abrasives, e.g. Emery, corundum, iron luster, quartz sand, flint, glass, etc., in a ground condition.

The method consists in that the above-mentioned mixture of fibrous materials and abrasives is pressed into bodies of any shape with the addition of a binding agent, which depends on the intended use of the grinding and polishing bodies. The product sold under the name "Serikose" serves as a binding agent, which according to the manufacturer is ethyl cellulose, is obtained by ethylation of cellulose and dissolves with strong acetic acid or aqueous rhodan salt. A suitable solution is obtained if Sericosis is stirred with twice the amount of rhodancalcium and 5-6 times the amount of water.

When using this solution, it is advisable to work through the previously moistened fiber to dissolve the fibers with acetic acid before adding the binding agent, as the solution solidifies immediately on contact with water. The solution gives the grinding respectively. Polishing bodies have a soft, rubber-like texture, which greatly improves their ability to be sanded and polished. Even so, the bodies remain firm and closed so that they wear out little. Furthermore, the binder has the advantage that the abrasives glued together with it do not fall apart in water, so they can also be used for wet sanding. It is advisable to add cellulose exantoic acid ester, as this has the effect that parts of the abrasives that have not accepted sericosis, for example, are resized.

A usable grinding and polishing article is obtained if, for example, the process is carried out in the following manner: Dry wood pulp is slurried in any amount of water and stirred with a stirrer until the fibers have completely separated from one another. The excess water is allowed to drain through a sieve until the fabric has only 50% water. The fabric is then impregnated with 7-grade acetic acid in a mixer.

Then the above-mentioned sericose solution is added and the whole thing worked through, at the same time adding dust emery in any appropriate amount and finally cellulose exantogenate in an amount which is about 1/10 of the weight of the wood pulp. About 5-20% sericose solution is added to 100 parts by weight of the wood emery mixture. The fiber and emery mix is pressed into the usual molds when wet under a pressure of about 50 kg / sq.
