The present invention relates to an installation for the manufacture of a multilayer material and material thus obtained.
Multilayer materials are found in many different fields and in particular in the field of packaging. One of the commonly used materials is corrugated cardboard. As a reminder, the corrugated cardboard is produced by covering a sheet, previously corrugated by passing between two fluted cylinders, with two cover sheets which are glued to the tips of the corrugations of the central sheet.
In the packaging industry, corrugated cardboard finds its main use as a particularly resistant protective packaging while being associated with environmental respect linked to its relatively easy recycling.
Another use of relatively thin corrugated cardboard is found in packaging that is more attractive to certain products. In this case, this corrugated cardboard should be printed. This printing operation is made possible due to the progress made in flexographic printing techniques which today make it possible to obtain quality prints in several colors.
However, the printing of a corrugated cardboard may have an unacceptable appearance, that is to say that this printing will have lines corresponding to each peak of the corrugations since during the printing operation, the corrugated cardboard will be slightly crushed. The different resistance between the top of the peaks and the part separating two consecutive peaks is the main cause of the appearance of these lines during the printing operation.
The production of corrugated cardboard is carried out by means of a complex machine such as a corrugator which comprises a paper feed station, in the form of reels, for a corrugation station, a feed station. of paper, in the form of reels, for a first cover sheet, a paper feeding station, in the form of reels, for a possible second cover sheet, a sizing device for depositing glue on the ridges of corrugations, a pressing station for bonding the second cover sheet to the ridges of the corrugated sheet, devices for longitudinal and transverse cutting of the corrugated sheet and a station for receiving the corrugated sheets cut to the desired format .
As a general rule, all the operations carried out on the different sheets that make up the corrugated cardboard are carried out at high temperature, around three hundred degrees, and often in a humid atmosphere.
In addition to its poor printability, the corrugated cardboard has poor mechanical strength in the direction which is parallel to the corrugations and it is very often "tiled", that is to say that it is curved and therefore difficult to process. whether in printing machines or in cutting machines. The creation of the corrugations requires a large amount of paper and the bonding of the cover sheets on the ridges of the corrugations also requires a significant contribution of glue.
The solutions currently proposed for manufacturing a multilayer material have all the aforementioned drawbacks, essentially linked to the configuration of known materials.
The object of the present invention is to remedy, at least in part, the drawbacks presented by a multilayer material of the type such as that described above.
To this end, the subject of the invention is an installation for the manufacture of a multilayer material as defined by claim 1 and the material thus obtained as defined by claims 5 to 8.
By its design, the installation allows in particular great flexibility of use and an adaptation to the manufacture of a multilayer material which allows the reduction of its unit weight while having rigidity in at least two directions as well as excellent printability.
Several other particularities and important advantages of this installation and of the material obtained will appear during the description which follows as well as with the aid of the appended drawings which illustrate, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of the installation and the material obtained.

Fig. 1 is a schematic view of an installation for manufacturing a first multilayer material 13. In this figure, we have omitted to represent, for reasons of simplification of the drawing, the paper feed stations which are in themselves good known to machine builders. These paper feeding stations generally include a reel holder equipped with a device for driving and braking the paper reels associated with a device for connecting a new reel to the balance of a reel at the end of the unwinding of so that continuity of the paper supply is ensured for the following parts of the installation.
The installation of fig. 1 comprises a station 1 for forming a structured strip 2. This station 1 is constituted by a cassette 3 composed of two lateral frames 4, 5 between which are mounted two upper 6 and lower 7 cylindrical tools intended to deform, essentially on one of its faces, a strip of paper 8 coming from a first paper feeding station (not shown). The lower cylindrical tool 7 is preferably connected to a vacuum supply source so that the structured strip 2, deformed on one of its faces at the point of engagement between the upper cylindrical tool 6 and l 'Lower cylindrical tool 7, is held by suction against a part of the circumference thereof.
An example of a tool allowing the deformation of the structured strip on one of its faces will be described in relation to FIG. 9. The asperities of the structured strip 2 located in the area of the suction circumference of the cylindrical tool 7 are provided with adhesive by means of a sizing unit 9 comprising a sizing roller 10 dipping in a reservoir 11. The quantity of adhesive applied to the asperities of the structured strip 2 is controlled using a wiping roller 12. To obtain a first multilayer material 13, a second strip of paper 14 coming from a second station the paper feed (not shown), similar to the first feed station mentioned above, is applied to the top of the glued edges of the structured strip 2 using a pressure cylinder 15.
The strip of the first multilayer material 13 then passes around a deflection cylinder 16 before being brought into a long cutting station 17. This long cutting station 17, known per se, comprises two lateral frames 18 and 19 between which circular cutting tools 20 and 21 are mounted. Circular cutting tools 20, also known, consist of circular blades arranged, in an adjustable manner, in the width of the longitudinal cutting station 17, so that that it is possible to obtain strips of first multilayer material 13 of different widths. The cutting of the edges of the strip of first multilayer material 13 is also carried out in this station.
The circular cutting tool 21 for its part generally consists of a counter tool having adjustable sleeves, in the width of the longitudinal cutting station 17, said sleeves having circular grooves that can be placed opposite the circular blades of the circular cutting tools 20. It should be noted that in certain longitudinal cutters, the circular cutting tool 21 may be in the form of an anvil cylinder coated, for example with a material such as polyurethane. The strip of first multilayer material 13 is then introduced into a cross cutter 22 comprising two lateral frames 23 and 24. This cross cutter 22 is also well known to machine builders.
It is composed of, among other things, an upper rotary tool 25 provided with a knife, most often of helical shape, and a lower anvil cylinder 26 which can either be made of steel or be covered with polyurethane. In known manner, the upper rotary cutting tool is driven so as to be able to make cuts of different lengths from the strip of first multilayer material 13, this according to the different formats desired. Leaving the longitudinal cutting station 22, the sheets 27 of first multilayer material 13 are transported by a belt conveyor 28 to a stacking station 29, represented schematically here by a device comprising a lowering member for stack 30 capable of forming a stack 31.
Fig. 2 is a schematic view of an installation for manufacturing a second multilayer material 40. The installation shown in this figure does not differ from that shown in FIG. 1 as by the addition of an insertion station 32 of a cover strip 33 on the multilayer material 35 to constitute the second multilayer material 40. Consequently, the members common to the two embodiments will bear the same reference numbers .
In this figure, it has also been omitted, for reasons of simplification of the drawing, to represent the paper feed stations which are in themselves well known to machine builders. As a reminder, it will be recalled that these paper feeding stations generally comprise a reel holder equipped with a device for driving and braking the paper reels associated with a device for connecting a new reel to the balance of a reel at the end of the unwinding so that the continuity of the paper supply is ensured for the following organs of the installation.
The installation of fig. 2 also comprises a station 1 for forming a strip structured on its two faces 34. This training station 1 is constituted by a cassette 3 composed of two lateral frames 4, 5 between which are mounted two upper 6 and lower cylindrical tools 7 intended to deform, on its two faces, a strip of paper 8 coming from a first paper feeding station (not shown). The lower cylindrical tool 7 is preferably connected to a vacuum supply source so that the structured strip 34 deformed at the point of engagement between the upper cylindrical tool 6 and the lower cylindrical tool 7 is maintained, by suction, against part of the circumference thereof.
An example of a tool allowing the deformation of the structured strip on its two faces will be described in relation to FIG. 10. The asperities of one of the faces of the structured strip 34 located in the area of the suction circumference of the cylindrical tool 7 are provided with adhesive by means of a sizing unit 9 comprising a sizing glue roller 10 in a reservoir 11. The quantity of adhesive applied to the roughness of one of the faces of the structured strip 34 is controlled using a wiping roller 12. This gluing unit 9 can indifferently use an adhesive based starch or vinyl glue.
To obtain a multilayer material 35, a second strip of paper 14 coming from a second paper feeding station (not shown), similar to the first feeding station mentioned above, is applied to the top of the asperities glued on one of the faces of the structured strip 34 using a pressure cylinder 15. The strip of multilayer material 35 then passes around a return cylinder 16 before being brought into a station insertion 32 of a cover strip 33 from a third paper feed station (not shown), similar to the first and the second feed station mentioned above.
The asperities of the other face of the structured strip 34 are glued by means of a gluing unit 36 of construction similar to the gluing unit 9 described in relation to FIG. 1. This gluing unit can also use either a starch-based glue or a vinyl glue. The glue roller 38 of this gluing unit 36 deposits glue on the asperities of the other side of the structured strip 34 in line with the return cylinder 16. The asperities glued on the other side of the strip of multilayer material 35 are then covered by the cover strip 33 by means of the laminating cylinder 39 to obtain the second multilayer material 40. This multilayer material 40 is then led to a pressing device 41 consisting of a table 42 and a member presser comprising a series of rollers 43.
It should be noted that some of these pressing devices 41 may include a conveyor belt instead of a table 42.
The strip of the second multilayer material 40 is then brought into a longitudinal cutting station 17 similar to that described in relation to FIG. 1. As a reminder, this longitudinal cutting station 17, known per se, comprises two lateral frames 18 and 19 between which are mounted circular cutting tools 20 and 21. The circular cutting tools 20, also known, are made up circular blades arranged, in an adjustable manner, in the width of the longitudinal cutting station 17, so that it is possible to obtain strips of first multilayer material 13 of different widths. The cutting of the edges of the strip of second multilayer material 40 is also carried out in this station.
As for the circular cutting tool 21, it generally consists of a counter tool having adjustable sleeves, arranged in the width of the longitudinal cutting station 17, said sleeves having circular grooves that can be placed opposite the circular blades. circular cutting tools 20. It should be noted that in certain longitudinal cutters, the circular cutting tool 21 may be in the form of an anvil cylinder coated, for example with a material such as polyurethane . The strip of second multilayer material 40 is then introduced into a cross cutter 22 comprising two lateral frames 23 and 24. This cross cutter 22 is also well known to machine builders.
It is composed of, among other things, an upper rotary tool 25 provided with a knife, most often of helical shape, and a lower anvil cylinder 26 which can either be made of steel or be covered with polyurethane. In known manner, the upper rotary cutting tool is driven so as to be able to make cuts of different lengths from the strip of second multilayer material 40, this according to the different formats desired. At the exit from the longitudinal cutting station 22, the sheets 44 of second multilayer material 40 are transported by a belt conveyor 28 to a stacking station 29, represented diagrammatically here by a device comprising a lowering member for stack 30 capable of forming a stack 31.
The stacking stations are also well known to machine manufacturers and will therefore not be described in detail in this presentation. Preferably, the paper web 8 to be deformed will be moistened accordingly in the same manner as is done in machines for making corrugated cardboard.

Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view of the material 34 of FIG. 4 structured on its two faces 48 and 49.
Figs. 7a to 7c represent the aspects which can be given to the structure of materials 2 and 34.
Fig. 8 is a view showing a box 50 produced with the multilayer material 13 obtained with the installation of FIG. 1. This box 50 is the very example of the use of a multilayer material 13 for an aesthetic purpose aimed at promoting a product. Use for advertising purposes is also possible. Obviously, such results cannot be obtained using a multilayer material of the corrugated cardboard type.
Fig. 9 is a partial section view of a tool 51 used to produce a material 2 structured on one of its faces 48. This tool 51 is composed of an upper honeycomb cylinder 52 and a lower honeycomb cylinder 53. The cells of the two cylinders interpenetrate to deform the strip of paper 8 so as to obtain a strip of structured material 2 on only one of its faces 48. The lower honeycomb cylinder 53 is arranged so as to maintain the strip of material texture 2 at the bottom of the cells of part of its circumference, this using the channels 54 connecting each cell to the hollowed-out central part of the cylinder 53 itself connected to a source of vacuum (not shown).
To obtain a strip of structured material 2 having a small structure thickness, it is not necessary for the tool 51 to be brought to a high temperature. In the case of structural thicknesses of larger dimensions, it will be necessary to provide a heating of the tool 51 to a temperature of the order of 300 DEG centigrade. For very small structure thicknesses, on the order of 0.2 to 0.6 millimeters, a simpler tool 51 can be produced using only a lower honeycomb cylinder 53 connected to a powerful vacuum source so that the action of the vacuum on the strip of paper 8 at the bottom of the cells causes the desired deformation to obtain the strip of structured material 2.
The production of the upper and lower honeycomb cylinders can advantageously be carried out for example by an electro-erosion process.
Fig. 10 is a sectional view of a tool 55 used to produce a structured material 34 on its two faces 48 and 49. This tool 55 is composed of an upper honeycomb cylinder 56 and a lower honeycomb cylinder 57. The cells of the two cylinders interpenetrate to deform the strip of paper 8 so as to obtain a strip of structured material 34 on its two faces 48 and 49. The lower honeycomb cylinder 57 is arranged so as to maintain the strip of textured material 34 at the bottom of the cells of part of its circumference, this by means of the channels 58 connecting each cell to the hollowed-out central part of the cylinder 57 itself connected to a source of vacuum (not shown).
To obtain a strip of structured material 34 having a small structure thickness, it is not necessary for the tool 55 to be brought to a high temperature. In the case of structure thicknesses of larger dimensions, it will be necessary to provide a heating of the tool 55 to a temperature of the order of 300 DEG centigrade. For very small structure thicknesses, of the order of 0.2 to 0.6 millimeters, it is possible, as for tool 51 in FIG. 9, make a simpler tool 55 using only a lower honeycomb cylinder 57 connected to a powerful vacuum source such that the action of the vacuum on the paper strip 8 at the bottom of the cells causes the desired deformation to obtain the strip of structured material 34.
The production of the upper and lower honeycomb cylinders can advantageously be carried out for example by an electro-erosion process.
The installation for the manufacture of a multilayer material described above makes it possible inter alia to obtain, in the case of the choice of the use of a strip structured on its two faces with a particular decorative pattern, like those shown by way of example in FIGS. 7a to 7c, a filigree multilayer material, which opens the choice for a wide variety of uses for this material, whether for decorative or other purposes.
