The present invention relates to a length measuring device comprising a frame on which are mounted measuring stops intended to come into contact with the object to be measured and at least one of which is arranged to be movable in a measuring direction and of which at least one comprises a probe mounted to slide in the direction of measurement in or on a support and urged towards a rest position by a return device intended to determine a measurement force by means of an actuating member.
There are known such devices or measuring benches in which the probe can be moved against the restoring force generally constituted by one or two springs. In these devices, it is usually not possible to vary the restoring force. In addition, there are no means to act on the function linking the magnitude of the restoring force to the relative movement between the movable probe and its support.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks, and to create a measuring device in which the measuring force or pressure can be adjusted precisely and linked to the movement of the probe by a predetermined function. It also aims to create a measuring device of a simple, robust construction and a moderate cost price, while allowing great measurement accuracy.
The measuring device according to the present invention is characterized for this purpose by the fact that the return device comprises a first lever pivotally mounted on the support and cooperating on the one hand with the actuating member and on the other hand with a second lever pivotally mounted on the support and arranged to cooperate with the probe, and by the fact that one of the levers comprises a cam follower urged against a cam profile provided on the other lever, this profile of cam having a shape such that the measuring force is linked by a substantially predetermined function to the movement of the probe relative to the support and by the fact that it comprises means intended to adjust the position of the actuating member relative to the first lever.
By these characteristics, it is possible to obtain a precise measurement force and an easy and rapid adjustment of this measurement force, while allowing a very wide range of measurement force. The invention also makes it possible to provide an exact relation or function linking the measurement force to the relative displacement between the probe and its support.
By changing the lever fitted with the cam profile, this function can also be modified according to the requirements of the measurement application. The device is furthermore of a simple and robust design, and allows a moderate cost price.
According to an advantageous embodiment, the shape of the cam profile is chosen so as to obtain a substantially constant measuring force when the probe is moved within predetermined limits relative to the support.
Thus, the shape of the cam profile makes it possible to compensate for the non-linearities of a given actuating member and other variations, for example those linked to the length of the lever arms.
According to a preferred embodiment, the cam profile comprises a hollow in a middle position determining said rest position and two convex branches in the form of bosses substantially symmetrical with respect to the middle position.
Such an arrangement ensures precise and symmetrical measurements in two opposite directions, for example for interior and exterior measurements.
The actuating member can be constituted by a spring or by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder.
Favorably, the actuating member is mounted on the support in a sliding manner in a direction parallel to the measurement direction and acting on the first lever in a direction substantially perpendicular to the measurement direction, in that the first lever is in the rest position substantially parallel to the measurement direction, while the second lever is in this rest position substantially perpendicular to the measurement direction and comprises an opening in which slides a rod secured to the probe.
This arrangement ensures a robust and compact construction and a moderate cost price.
Other advantages emerge from the characteristics expressed in the dependent claims and from the description setting out the invention below in more detail with the aid of drawings which schematically represent by way of example an embodiment and a variant.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the measuring apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apparatus illustrated in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a detail on a larger scale of FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a variant of the detail of FIG. 4.
In the illustrated embodiment, the device according to the invention comprises a frame 1 equipped with a fixed stop 2, the position of which can be adjusted linearly on the frame and which carries a fixed probe 3. A non-locking member illustrated allows to fix the fixed stop 2 on the frame 1.
The apparatus also comprises a transport carriage 5 provided with a linear drive system along the frame 1 controlled by means of a crank 6 and a precision adjustment button 7. In the upper part 8 of this carriage 5 a measuring probe 10 is slidably mounted. Its rear part forms a slide 11 arranged on the carriage 5 which in fact constitutes the support for the measuring probe 10.
The slide 11 is integral with a connecting rod 12 by which the feeler 10 is connected to a return device 14 intended to determine a pressure or measuring force and the features of which are illustrated in FIG. 3.
This return device 14 comprises an actuating member 15, a first lever 16 and a second lever 17. The actuating member 15 is here constituted by a coil spring 23 housed perpendicular to the direction of measurement x in a cylinder 24 of a block 18 and acting on an actuating rod 19. The block 18 is mounted on a rack 20 which can be moved in a direction parallel to the measurement direction x by means of a thumb wheel 21. A stop 22 limits the movement of the rack 20. By virtue of the displacement of the block 18, the measuring force can be continuously adjusted and constitutes a function of the angle of rotation of the knob 21.
The first lever 16 comprises a pivot axis 25, a first arm 26 intended to cooperate with the actuating rod 19 and a second arm 27 carrying a caster 28 as a cam follower. The two arms 26, 27 are oriented in parallel to the measuring direction x in the rest position.
The second lever 17 has a pivot axis 30, a first arm 31 with a cam profile 32 intended to cooperate with the caster 28 and a second arm 33 with an opening 34 in which is slidably engaged without play the end of the connecting rod 12 carrying a roller 35. The two arms of the second lever 17 are oriented perpendicular to the measurement direction x in the rest position.
The cam profile 32 has a shape such that the pressure or measuring force is linked to the movement of the probe 10 substantially according to a predetermined function; in particular, this shape can be chosen so as to obtain a substantially constant measuring force, when the probe is moved within predetermined limits which can be visualized by lines 40 applied to the slide 11 moving with respect to a solid mark 41 of carriage 5 (fig. 2).
The cam profile 32 preferably includes for this purpose a recess 45 in a central position to determine the rest position and two convex boss-shaped branches 46 substantially symmetrical with respect to the central position. These bosses 46 are shaped so as to compensate for the non-linearities of the return spring 23 and the variations in the length of the lever arm resulting from the sliding of the connecting rod 12 in the opening 34 of the second lever 17 when the latter is rotated.
The shape of the cam profile 32 with these two bosses 46 makes it possible to carry out measurements in two opposite directions with a substantially constant measuring force or pressure whatever the movement of the probe 10 within the predetermined limits.
To perform the length measurement, the device is provided with a sensor 47, fixed on the frame 1 and arranged opposite a rule provided on the slide 11 (fig. 2). This sensor 47 can operate according to any physical, capacitive, inductive, optical, etc. principle. To be able to obtain as large a measurement range as possible, the ruler has a long length. The upper part 8 of the carriage for this purpose comprises an extension 9.
The variant illustrated in FIG. 4 differs from the embodiment described above by the actuating member 15 which here consists of a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 50 connected to a source of pressurized fluid acting on a piston 51 housed in the cylinder 50. When the fluid is compressed air, one can, for example, provide a small tolerance in diameter between the piston 51 and the cylinder 50, of the order of 1 to 2 hundredths of a millimeter, so as to obtain a low leakage of compressed air and consequently a constant measuring force, independent of the position of the probe relative to its support.
It is understood that the embodiment and the variant described above are in no way limiting and that they can receive any desirable modifications within the framework as defined by claim 1. In particular, the movable probe with its return device 14 could be mounted on the fixed stop 2. The carriage 5 could then be provided with a fixed probe.
Instead of a rack, other means for adjusting the position of the actuating member 15 relative to the lever 16 may be provided, for example in the form of a member sliding on rails integral with the carriage 5. The cam profile could have a different shape, for example suitable for measurements made in one direction of measurement or for measurements with increasing measuring force with the relative displacement between the slide and the carriage according to a predetermined function, for example increasing linear.
The cam profile could also be provided on the lever 16 and cooperating with a cam follower of the lever 17.
