Fig. 1 eine Vorrichtung in schematischer Darstellung;
The invention relates to a device for applying reinforcement strips provided with a marking to the back of book blocks, the device having a marking device for continuously applying the marking on a paper web from which the reinforcement strips are cut.
It has proven to be very useful that the reinforcement strips of book blocks are provided with a transverse marking which makes it possible to recognize the correct position of the book block before attaching the cover. The problem with devices of the type mentioned is that the work cycle when the reinforcement strips are glued to the backs of the book blocks results in a constantly changing speed and a temporary standstill of the paper web of the reinforcement strips pulled off the paper roll.
It is already known to mark the reinforcement strips by means of a ballpoint refill. Here, however, there is the disadvantage that a readable, i.e. sufficiently strong marking cannot be written. The jagged surface of the crepe paper used for the reinforcement strips prevents a uniformly continuous marking from being writable. On the other hand, crepe paper must be used for the reinforcement strips, since the paper used here must have a rough surface for the necessary intensive glue absorption. The elastic crepe paper used also nestles very well in the back of a book block. When hardened, the reinforcement strip gives the book block the required strength.
In addition, from the constantly changing speed and the temporary standstill of the paper web of the reinforcement strips pulled off the paper roll, the disadvantage arises that devices which generate an intensive marking, such as e.g. a writing wick of an ink pen, are not suitable for application. Such a writing wick would apply markings of very different intensities depending on the feed speed. Since the ink flow is constant, the absorbent crepe paper used here would often even impermissibly impregnate the reinforcement strip. On the other hand, the intensity of the marking would be insufficient at high speeds.
In the devices of the type mentioned, there is also the problem that reinforcement strips must be processed in a wide variety of web widths. In this respect, it is also not possible to economically use paper rolls printed with markings beforehand in a printing press. The consequence of the difficulties described in connection with the marking of the reinforcement strips is that the correct positioning of the book blocks had previously to be checked visually.
The invention is based on the object of avoiding the disadvantages mentioned and of creating a possibility of applying reliably readable markings of uniform intensity and line width to reinforcement strips by means of a sensor.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the features of claim 1. Characterized in that the marking device is formed by a write head of an ink jet printer, that the write head is arranged on the paper web of the reinforcement strips, that a rotary encoder is arranged that detects the respective feed speed of the paper web, and that a control device is provided that the write head of the ink jet printer depending on the feed speed of the paper web, it has been achieved that a continuous marking of constant intensity is applied to the paper web.
It is advantageous if a sensor is arranged in the direction of travel of the paper web behind the write head of the inkjet printer, which monitors the marking and its intensity, such that the device is stopped when an insufficient marking is detected.
Within the scope of the invention it can also be provided that the writing head is arranged to be movable transversely to the direction of travel of the paper web and that the marking can be applied to the paper web transversely to the direction of travel, and that a sensor is arranged in the direction of movement behind the writing head of the ink jet printer, which detects the marking and monitored their intensity. In this case, the markings run in the longitudinal direction on the reinforcement strips. It is advantageous here if the control device controls the nozzles of the write head, which are arranged laterally offset in a manner known per se, as a function of the feed speed of the paper web, in such a way that markings which run exactly at right angles to the direction of travel can be applied. The marking device can also be formed by several writing heads.
In the drawing, an embodiment of the invention is shown and will be described in more detail below. Show it:
Figure 1 shows a device in a schematic representation.
Fig. 2 shows a book block provided with a reinforcing strip having a marking.
In the drawing, 1 denotes a device for attaching a reinforcing strip 2 to the back of book blocks 3. The device 1 has a paper roll 4, from which a paper web 5 runs into the device 1. A writing head 6 of an ink jet printer, not shown in the drawing, is arranged on the paper web. A continuous marking 7 is applied to the paper web 5 by means of the writing head 6. Alternatively, several write heads 6 can also be arranged, so that several tracks can then be written.
In the running direction of the paper web 5 indicated by an arrow in FIG. 1, a sensor 8 is arranged behind the write head 6. In addition, a rotary encoder 9 is arranged on the paper web 5, which detects the respective feed speed of the paper web 5. A control unit 10 is connected to the rotary encoder 9 via a line 11 and to the write head 6 via a line 12. In addition, the sensor 8 is connected to the control device 10 via a line 13. At the end of the paper web 5, a receptacle 14 is provided for the book block 3 to be provided with the reinforcement strip 2.
During the operation of the device 1, the paper web 5 is drawn off the paper roll 4 at a constantly changing speed in accordance with the work cycle when the reinforcement strips 2 are stuck in the receptacle 14 for the book blocks 3. The paper web 5, the respective feed speed of which is detected by means of the rotary encoder 9, passes under the write head 6 and is thereby provided with the continuous marking 7. By means of the control device 10, the write head 6, i.e. whose ink jet applied the mark 7, controlled in such a way that a mark 7, which is always constant in intensity, is generated on the paper web 5 regardless of the respective feed speed.
The control of the write head 6 takes place as a function of the respective feed rate determined by the rotary encoder 9, which is evaluated in the control unit 10. The write head 6 is preferably the write head 6 of an inkjet printer. As has been shown, a write head 6 of this type is surprisingly very well suited for generating a uniform marking that can be reliably read by a sensor.
After being applied, the mark 7 applied to the paper wall 5 passes under a sensor 8 which controls its correct intensity. If it is determined here by the sensor 8 that the mark 7 lies outside the permissible tolerance range, the paper web 5 is stopped immediately, so that reinforcement strips 2 provided with an illegible mark 7 are reliably prevented from being attached to the book blocks 3. Within the meaning of the invention, markings 7 naturally also encodings, such as Barcodes, understood. The application of such codes is of course within the scope of the invention. Alternatively, it is also possible to arrange the writing head 6 such that it can be moved transversely to the direction of travel of the paper web 5 and to apply markings transverse to the direction of travel, lying side by side, on the paper web 5.
In this case, the markings run on the reinforcement strips 2 in the longitudinal direction. Insofar as the control device 10 controls the laterally offset nozzles of the write head 6 as a function of the feed speed of the paper web 5, markings extending exactly at right angles to the running direction can be applied to them.
After passing the sensor 8, the paper web 5 arrives at the receptacle 14, in which the book blocks are glued with the reinforcement strips 2 provided with the marking 7. The markings 7 attached to the reinforcement strips 2 then serve to check the correct position of the book blocks 3 when the cover is subsequently attached. The uniform marking 7 produced according to the invention makes it possible here to check the correct position of the book blocks 3 by means of a sensor. The overall result is a very secure marking system that reliably avoids costly rejects.
