The subject of the present invention is, firstly, a slender piece, in particular used as a post made of a thermoplastic material but also the method of making it, and in particular a device for molding or extruding such a piece and finally the manufacturing process for this particular device.
Plastic materials, and in particular thermoplastics, have many advantages compared to conventional materials used for the manufacture of posts, such as wood, concrete and metals, in particular steel.
The wooden poles used in particular for the creation of barriers in farming installations, along railway tracks, etc. are subject to attack by bacteria, mold and fungi which cause wood to rot. Concrete posts used for similar purposes are subject to surface damage during transport and installation, which leads to their reinforcements rusting and the disintegration of concrete surfaces. The steel posts obviously rust which leads to significant maintenance costs.
A plastic post has none of these disadvantages and is lighter than concrete or steel posts. However, a conventional plastic post is heavier than an equivalent wooden post.
One of the aims of the present invention is the production of a post made of synthetic material, of equivalent resistance, but lighter than a wooden post. Another goal is to limit the cost of such a plastic post to be competitive with traditional wooden, metal or concrete posts.
The objects of the present invention are distinguished by the characteristics described and claimed in the following.
The accompanying drawing illustrates schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of a post according to the invention as well as the mold used for its manufacture.
Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view of a plastic post according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of a profile used for the production of a mold according to the invention.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of a mold for the production of plastic posts according to the invention.
Plastic materials are more expensive than wood, concrete or metal. Even reclaimed plastic, after collection, washing, densification and molding, hardly compete with wood in Europe and America, with equal weight and volume.
The main characteristics which determine the value of a post are its rigidity, its stiffness, as well as its resistance to bad weather, term including in its broad sense the degradations due to the activity of bacteria and fungi.
The wooden posts have generally circular or square sections, the concrete posts are generally of square section.
On the other hand, a plastic post can have any section due to the flexibility of existing molding methods. This allows the realization of plastic posts which are not simply practical and usable from the point of view of their adequate rigidity and their good weather resistance, but which moreover, thanks to an adequate form limiting the volume of material are sufficiently good market to compete with wooden poles.
The plastic post, generally made of thermoplastic material, made of recycled plastic, has in cross section the shape illustrated in FIG. 1.
The shape of this section of the post 1 is inscribed in an equilateral triangle whose sides 2 have a length X. The vertices of the three branches 3 of the section of the post 1 are limited by arcs of circles 4 with a radius equal to 0 , 5.X whose center 0 is confused with the intersection of the bisectors b1, b2, b3 of the angles of the equilateral triangle.
Between the intersection of these arcs of circles 4 with the sides 2 of the equilateral triangle and the quarter of the width of each side 2 of the equilateral triangle counted from each of its vertices 5 the section of the post 1 has rectilinear portions 6 combined with sides 2 of the equilateral triangle.
The ends of the rectilinear portions 6 located on the same side 2 of the equilateral triangle are connected by an arc of a circle 7 with a radius equal to 0.35.X whose center C is on the bisector b intersecting the corresponding side 2 of the triangle, outside of said equilateral triangle.
The shape of the cross section of the post according to the invention is thus delimited by the arcs of circles 4 and 7 as well as by the rectilinear portions 6. Roundings of 5 mm are provided along the connections of the various curvilinear and rectilinear portions of this section.
Such a post 1 having a cross section inscribed in an equilateral triangle, having the truncated vertices and concave portions on each face, occupies an area of approximately 40% of that of a circle passing through the vertices 4 of the branches or lobes 3 The rigidity of a post having such a section is approximately 66% of that of the circular section passing through the vertices 4 of the lobes 3. As the manufacturing price, in particular for a transfer molding process is proportional to the surface of the section of the product, the advantage of this section with three branches or lobes described is apparent.
A piece, or post, having a section as described above can be easily produced by a transfer molding process using a machine, for example of the ET / 1 type manufactured by ART Engineering SA in Brakel, Belgium, and marketed by Advanced Recycling Technology SA in Lausanne. Such a part can also be molded on so-called "Superwood" machines sold by Superwood International Ltd. at Dublin. These machines are particularly suitable and designed to work and be fed with chips or granules of contaminated residues of thermoplastic materials.
In such machines, known commercially under the name of "KLOBBIE machines", name of their inventor Edouard Klobbie, and which are described in US Pat. No. 4,187,352, the plastic material is plasticized and extruded by an adiabatic extruder ( in which the plasticization temperature is obtained by the friction of the plastic against the extrusion screw and the walls of the extrusion chamber). Hollow molds, the length of which in centimeters is generally between three and fifty times the value of the area of their section in square centimeters, are mounted in a barrel or carousel with a horizontal axis in a plane parallel to that of the screw d extrusion, so that the molds can be presented successively to the nozzle or flange of the extruder for filling.
The closing pressure is produced by a pneumatic cylinder coaxial with the screw of the extruder when the mold is filled.
When the mold has been cooled by the rotation of the barrel in a cold water tank, compressed air is used to blow the molded part out of the mold into a suitable receptacle. In this way, if a suitable mold is available, posts having a section as illustrated in FIG. 1 can be molded in lengths up to four meters and dimensions or X, the length of the sides of the circumscribed equilateral triangle, corresponds to twelve centimeters.
Thus, as we have just seen, the manufacture by extrusion-molding (flow-molding), a well-known and mastered technique, of the posts previously described, is easy provided that an adequate mold is available.
The production of such a mold is precisely another object of the present invention. Indeed, a difficulty lies in the manufacture of a mold adapted to the production of the section poles described because there are no tools allowing the machining of the hollow or empty sections required, and that the design and the production of such tools with known techniques impose high prices for the manufacture of these molds. This is why the present invention also proposes to solve the problems associated with the manufacture of a mold suitable for molding the posts described.
The manufacture of such a mold according to the invention boils down to extruding an aluminum profile 8 by known techniques, profile having in cross section the shape illustrated in FIG. 2.
This profile has a cylindrical outer surface 9 circumscribed to the equilateral triangle of side 2 of a length X, the axis of this surface 9 is therefore the intersection 0 of the bisectors b1, b2, b3. The internal surface of this profile is formed in its middle part by a cylindrical surface 10 of radius equal to 0.35 X, corresponding to the portion 7 on one side of the post 1, extended on either side by plane surfaces 11.11 min located in the plane containing a side 2 of the equilateral triangle. Finally, this internal surface also includes portions in an arc of a circle or cylindrical 12.12 min corresponding to half of the arcs of circles 4 forming the vertices of the lobes 3 of the post 1.
These 12.12 min portions end on the corresponding bisectors b of the equilateral triangle and are connected to the external cylindrical surface 9 by planar surfaces 13.13 min along said bisectors b.
An aluminum profile with the section described above and illustrated in fig. 2, is easily extruded by the usual techniques. The parts 10, 11, 11 min and 12, 12 min of its internal surface correspond exactly to the external surface of the post 1 comprised between two bisectors b.
Three identical profiles 8 made to the desired length are then assembled, their surfaces 13, 13 min being in contact, and threaded into a steel tube 14 (fig. 3) whose internal diameter corresponds to the diameter of the external surface 9 of the profiles 8. The three sections 8 are bonded together along their surfaces 13, 13 min in contact, and optionally to the tube 14, using a heat-resistant synthetic adhesive. Certain epoxy type adhesives sold by Ciba-Geigy under the registered trademark "Araldite" can be used for this purpose.
The steel tube 14 is provided with end flanges of suitable shape to correspond to the mold-carrying discs of the barrel of the molding machine to be used. No modification of the molding machine or molding process is necessary.
The mold thus produced, thanks to its original design and manufacturing process, is easy to manufacture and therefore inexpensive since it requires no machining.
It is obvious that the mold described, its manufacturing process remaining the same, can be modified in that the number of profiles 8 mounted inside the tube 14 can be equal to two or more than three, and that the internal surface of each of these sections 8 corresponds to the shape of a surface of a slender object to be molded.
When the profiles 8 are fixed to the tube 14 in which they are mounted, the tool thus produced can be used as a continuous extrusion die for a plastic profile having the cross-section of the surface left free between said profiles 8.
The mold or the die described can be produced using several identical sections 8 mounted in a tube 14 or alternatively using several sections of different sections from each other as long as their external surfaces 9 and those 13 , 13 min which are in contact with each other remain identical.
