Abstract

The convertible vehicle comprises a retractable roof consisting of a first rigid element (10) in the form of a shell, capable of pivoting about a horizontal spindle (11) carried by the bodywork and of a second plane rigid element (12) articulated to the element (10). This roof may be retracted into a space provided behind the seats by causing the element (10) to pivot backwards and by folding the element (12) down against the element (10) until the assembly is entirely contained inside the space. <IMAGE>

   REVENDICATIONS
 1. Véhicule décapotable dont le toit est escamotable dans une enceinte située   derriére    les sièges, caractérisé par le fait que ledit toit comprend un élément rigide (10) susceptible de pivoter autour d'un axe   horizontal ( 11 )    supporté par la carrosserie entre une   premiére    position pour laquelle le toit est fermé et une seconde position pour laquelle il est escamoté dans ladite enceinte.



   2. Véhicule selon la revendication   I, caractérisé    par le fait que ledit élément rigide (10) est monté sur ledit   axe (11) par    l'entremise de deux bras articulés (13).



   3. Véhicule selon la revendication 1, caractérisé par le fait qu'il comprend un second élément rigide (12) articulé au premier élément   rigide ( 10).   



   4. Véhicule selon la revendication 3, caractérisé par le fait que le second élément rigide (12) est articulé au premier élément rigide (10) par l'entremise du bras (13).



   5. Véhicule selon la revendication 1, caractérisé par le fait qu'il comprend un second élément rigide (16) coulissant sur le premier (10).



   6. Véhicule selon la revendication 1, caractérisé par le fait que le toit comprend un élément souple (14).



   7. Véhicule selon la revendication 1, caractérisé par le fait que ledit axe de   pivotement (11)    peut se déplacer dans des   glissiéres    (17).



   8. Véhicule selon les revendications 2 et 6.



   Les véhicules décapotables comportent soit un toit souple, dit softtop, susceptible d'être plié dans une enceinte, soit un toit amovible rigide, dit hardtop, sorte de coquille métallique ou plastique, qui est fixée amoviblement sur la carrosserie.



   Le softtop est généralement constitué par une toile imperméable montée sur une armature pliante. Son étanchéité n'est   guére    maintenue   aprés    un certain temps d'utilisation et sa toile n'est pas à même d'assurer une isolation thermique et phonique suffisante.



   Le softtop est en outre trés fragile et doit être souvent remplacé.



  De plus, il est le siège de vibrations très intenses et il se déforme sous l'effet des filets d'air s'écoulant sur sa face externe. Ces   phénoménes    engendrent, à partir d'une certaine vitesse du véhicule, une augmentation sensible de la traînée du véhicule et de la consommation du carburant. Quant au hardtop, sa mise en place est difficile et ne peut être faite par l'automobiliste seul, notamment à cause de son poids et de ses dimensions. De plus son prix est relativement élevé.



   Pour remédier à ces divers inconvénients, on a proposé des toits rigides s'escamotant dans le coffre à bagages par coulissement sur des rails. Ces toits ne sont cependant réalisables que pour des spiders dans lesquels l'habitacle et le coffre présentent des longueurs sensiblement égales. Par ailleurs les mécanismes de manoeuvre de ces toits sont compliqués et peu fiables.



   L'invention a pour objet un véhicule décapotable qui ne présente aucun des inconvénients susmentionnés. Elle n'est limitée à aucun type de véhicule en particulier. elle s'applique aussi bien à des voitures à deux qu'à quatre places.



   Le véhicule décapotable selon la présente invention, dont le toit est destiné à être escamoté dans une enceinte située derrière les sièges, est caractérisé par le fait que ledit toit comprend un élément rigide susceptible de pivoter autour d'un axe horizontal supporté par la carrosserie entre une première position pour laquelle le toit est fermé et une seconde position pour laquelle le toit est escamoté dans ladite enceinte.



   Le dessin ci-annexé représente, à titre d'exemple, plusieurs formes d'exécution de l'invention.



   Les fig. 1 à 4 sont des vues de profil d'un cabriolet deux places.



   Les fig. 5 à 8 sont des vues schématiques illustrant la cinématique du toit.



   Les fig. 9 a 12 sont des vues de profil d'un autre cabriolet deux places.

   La voiture à deux places représentée aux fig.   I    à 8 est équipée d'un toit escamotable constitué par un premier élément rigide 10, en forme de coquille, pivotant autour d'un axe horizontal 11 et par un second élément rigide 12, de forme sensiblement plane, articulé à l'élément 10.



   Ce toit s'escamote intégralement, de la manière illustrée, en occupant un volume minimal, dans une enceinte prévue derrière les sièges. Au cours du mouvement d'escamotage, l'élément plan 12 est rabattu contre l'élément 10 en effectuant un mouvement de translation horizontal.



   Dans la voiture à deux places représentée aux fig. 9 à 17, le toit escamotable est également constitué par deux parties rigides 10 et 12 analogues à celles de la première forme d'exécution. Toutefois, l'axe de pivotement 11 est situé en arrière de l'ensemble et l'élément plan
 12 est articulé à l'élément en forme de coquille par l'entremise de deux bras 13.



   La voiture a quatre places représentée aux fig. 18 à 26 est équipée d'un toit escamotable constitué par un élément rigide plan 10 articulé par l'intermédiaire de deux bras 13 à un axe de pivotement 11 et par une capote souple 14. L'escamotage est obtenu en pliant la capote 14 et en rabattant vers l'arrière la partie rigide 10 et les deux bras 13.



   Ce toit présente l'avantage de pouvoir être décapoté partiellement ou intégralement, comme illustrés respectivement aux fig. 19 et 21 du dessin. Pour faciliter les   manoeuvres,    on utilisera avantageusement des ressorts de compensation tels qu'illustrés aux fig. 27 à 30.



   Dans la voiture représentée aux fig. 31 à 34, le toit est réalisé au moyen de deux éléments rigides 10 et 12 sensiblement plans, de façon qu'il occupe en position escamotée un volume extrêmement réduit.



   Le toit escamotable de la voiture à deux places, représentée schématiquement aux fig. 35 à 38, ne comprend qu'un seul élément rigide 10, en forme de coquille, articulé autour d'un axe 11. La particularité de cette forme d'exécution réside dans le fait que l'axe 11 peut se déplacer dans une glissière 17, ce qui permet de réduire la longueur de l'enceinte dans laquelle l'élément 10 est escamoté.



   La voiture à deux places représentée schématiquement aux fig. 39 à 43 comprend un toit constitué par un élément rigide 10, susceptible de pivoter autour d'un axe horizontal   il,    et un élément rigide 16 monté de façon   coulissanle    sur l'élément 10. Pour escamoter le toit, on fait glisser l'élément 16 sur l'élément 10, comme illustré aux fig. 40 à 42, puis on fait pivoter l'ensemble autour de l'axe   11 jusqu'à    ce qu'il soit entièrement contenu dans l'enceinte prévue à cet effet derrière les sièges.



   Les principaux avantages des véhicules décrits sont les suivants:
 1) En conduite fermée, le toit n'est le siège d'aucune déformation ou vibration.



   2) Le véhicule peut. dans la plupart des cas, être décapoté partiellement.  



   3) Les porte-objets (skis, bagages. surfs, bicyclettes, etc.)



  peuvent être montés sur les gouttières sans gêner ou empêcher l'ouverture ou la fermeture du toit.



   4) Compte tenu du déplacement quasi horizontal de la partie avant du toit, il est possible de manoeuvrer le toit pendant la marche du véhicule.



   5) L'enceinte, dans laquelle le toit est escamoté, est automatiquement fermée par un des éléments rigides.



   6) Les divers mouvements du toit peuvent être commandés par des moteurs réducteurs électriques ou par des vérins hydrauliques ou pneumatiques. L'invention n'est évidemment pas limitée aux formes d'exécution représentées au dessin.



   En particulier le toit escamotable pourrait être constitué par plus de deux éléments rigides.

   CLAIMS
 1. Convertible vehicle whose roof is retractable in an enclosure located behind the seats, characterized in that said roof comprises a rigid element (10) capable of pivoting about a horizontal axis (11) supported by the bodywork between a first position for which the roof is closed and a second position for which it is retracted into said enclosure.



   2. Vehicle according to claim I, characterized in that said rigid element (10) is mounted on said axis (11) by means of two articulated arms (13).



   3. Vehicle according to claim 1, characterized in that it comprises a second rigid element (12) articulated to the first rigid element (10).



   4. Vehicle according to claim 3, characterized in that the second rigid element (12) is articulated to the first rigid element (10) through the arm (13).



   5. Vehicle according to claim 1, characterized in that it comprises a second rigid element (16) sliding on the first (10).



   6. Vehicle according to claim 1, characterized in that the roof comprises a flexible element (14).



   7. Vehicle according to claim 1, characterized in that said pivot axis (11) can move in slides (17).



   8. Vehicle according to claims 2 and 6.



   Convertible vehicles have either a flexible roof, known as a softtop, capable of being folded in an enclosure, or a rigid removable roof, known as hardtop, a sort of metal or plastic shell, which is removably attached to the bodywork.



   The softtop generally consists of a waterproof canvas mounted on a folding frame. Its tightness is hardly maintained after a certain time of use and its fabric is not able to ensure sufficient thermal and sound insulation.



   The softtop is also very fragile and must be replaced often.



  In addition, it is the seat of very intense vibrations and it deforms under the effect of the air streams flowing on its outer face. These phenomena generate, from a certain vehicle speed, a significant increase in vehicle drag and fuel consumption. As for the hardtop, its installation is difficult and cannot be done by the motorist alone, in particular because of its weight and dimensions. In addition, its price is relatively high.



   To overcome these various drawbacks, rigid roofs have been proposed which retract into the luggage compartment by sliding on rails. These roofs are however only achievable for spiders in which the passenger compartment and the boot have substantially equal lengths. Furthermore, the operating mechanisms of these roofs are complicated and unreliable.



   The subject of the invention is a convertible vehicle which does not have any of the above-mentioned drawbacks. It is not limited to any particular type of vehicle. it applies to both two and four-seater cars.



   The convertible vehicle according to the present invention, the roof of which is intended to be retracted into an enclosure situated behind the seats, is characterized in that the said roof comprises a rigid element capable of pivoting around a horizontal axis supported by the bodywork between a first position for which the roof is closed and a second position for which the roof is retracted into said enclosure.



   The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, several embodiments of the invention.



   Figs. 1 to 4 are side views of a two-seat convertible.



   Figs. 5 to 8 are schematic views illustrating the kinematics of the roof.



   Figs. 9 to 12 are side views of another two-seat convertible.

   The two-seater car shown in fig. I to 8 is equipped with a retractable roof constituted by a first rigid element 10, in the form of a shell, pivoting about a horizontal axis 11 and by a second rigid element 12, of substantially planar shape, articulated to the element 10 .



   This roof retracts completely, as illustrated, occupying a minimum volume, in an enclosure provided behind the seats. During the retraction movement, the planar element 12 is folded against the element 10 by performing a horizontal translational movement.



   In the two-seater car shown in figs. 9 to 17, the retractable roof also consists of two rigid parts 10 and 12 similar to those of the first embodiment. However, the pivot axis 11 is located behind the assembly and the planar element
 12 is articulated to the shell-shaped element by means of two arms 13.



   The car has four seats shown in fig. 18 to 26 is equipped with a retractable roof constituted by a rigid planar element 10 articulated by means of two arms 13 to a pivot axis 11 and by a flexible hood 14. The retraction is obtained by folding the hood 14 and by folding back the rigid part 10 and the two arms 13.



   This roof has the advantage of being able to be partially or fully opened, as illustrated respectively in FIGS. 19 and 21 of the drawing. To facilitate the maneuvers, advantageously use compensating springs as illustrated in FIGS. 27 to 30.



   In the car shown in fig. 31 to 34, the roof is made by means of two rigid elements 10 and 12 substantially planar, so that it occupies in the retracted position an extremely reduced volume.



   The retractable roof of the two-seater car, shown diagrammatically in FIGS. 35 to 38, comprises only one rigid element 10, in the form of a shell, articulated around an axis 11. The particularity of this embodiment lies in the fact that the axis 11 can move in a slide 17, which makes it possible to reduce the length of the enclosure in which the element 10 is retracted.



   The two-seater car shown diagrammatically in FIGS. 39 to 43 comprises a roof constituted by a rigid element 10, capable of pivoting about a horizontal axis it, and a rigid element 16 mounted in a sliding manner on the element 10. To retract the roof, the element is slid 16 on the element 10, as illustrated in FIGS. 40 to 42, then the assembly is pivoted around the axis 11 until it is entirely contained in the enclosure provided for this purpose behind the seats.



   The main advantages of the vehicles described are as follows:
 1) In closed driving, the roof is not the seat of any deformation or vibration.



   2) The vehicle can. in most cases, be partially opened.



   3) Object holders (skis, luggage, surfboards, bicycles, etc.)



  can be mounted on gutters without interfering with or preventing the opening or closing of the roof.



   4) Given the almost horizontal displacement of the front part of the roof, it is possible to maneuver the roof while the vehicle is running.



   5) The enclosure, in which the roof is retracted, is automatically closed by one of the rigid elements.



   6) The various movements of the roof can be controlled by electric reduction motors or by hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders. The invention is obviously not limited to the embodiments shown in the drawing.



   In particular, the retractable roof could consist of more than two rigid elements.
