The present invention relates to a retractable armrest seat, the embodiment of which makes the armrest easily removable without having to disassemble or loosen any member beforehand. In addition, the armrest of the invention, when used on seats with reclining backrest, has its curvature modified and adapted to the inclination of the backrest without there being any need to provide several sections of armrest hinged together, as is the case with armrests known up to now.
According to the invention, the seat with retractable armrest is characterized in that both the seat and the back support laterally a retaining pin of one end of a flexible elastic blade maintained in compression between the two said axes so that 'it soars by defining either a convex curvature or a concave curvature depending on whether it is brought into one or the other of the two configurations by acting on it by pushing or pulling.
Various other characteristics of the invention will also emerge from the detailed description which follows.
An embodiment of the object of the invention is shown, by way of nonlimiting example, in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a schematic side elevation of a seat applying the invention, and
fig. 2 is a very enlarged schematic perspective illustrating an embodiment detail.
In the drawing, 1 designates the seat of a seat and 2 the backrest. The seat and the backrest are connected by an articulation mechanism 3, the axis of which is designated by 4. A control mechanism with handle or button or of another embodiment known in the art is normally provided for pivoting the folder 2 in relation to the seat. The mechanisms of this kind being well known in the art and their constitution not falling within the scope of the invention, they are not described in more detail in the following.
The seat i and the backrest 2 are connected by at least one armrest 5 constituted by a flexible blade, the ends of which are connected to axes 6 and 7 respectively carried by the seat and the backrest. As illustrated in fig. 2, the above axes are advantageously designed to define a groove 8 in which is engaged the corresponding end of the flexible blade forming the armrest. A washer or other stop 9 is provided at the end of the axis to prevent the blade 5 from escaping. It may be advantageous to provide a second washer 10 to form a spacer between the internal edge of the blade and the padding of the backrest and the seat.
The depth of the groove 8 of each axis is selected so that the blade 5 constituting the armrest cannot escape and the length of this blade is greater than the distance separating the axis 6 from the axis 7, so that said blade 5 is bandaged in the manner of an arc so that it flames.
It results from the conditions set out in the above that the blade 5 has a curvature which, on the one hand, is attractive and, on the other hand, corresponds to the shape which an armrest must have in order to be comfortable when the forearm and possibly the wrists, even the palms of the hands.
If it is desired that the curvature has a particular shape, this can be obtained by acting either on the thickness of certain parts of the blade, or on its width, one of the ends, for example that disposed in the vicinity of the axis 6, which can in particular be more flexible. The blade 5 can be covered by any padding in fabric or plastic when it is desired that its appearance corresponds to that of the covering of the seat and the backrest or that it contributes to the variable flexibility of the blade.
As illustrated in the drawing, when the backrest 2 is in the raised position corresponding to the most frequent use position,
The armrest 5 occupies the position in which it is shown in solid lines. When the user wishes to retract the armrest, for example to leave the seat, it suffices for him to exert pressure on the top of the armrest, which has the effect of causing him to become stiff and then causing him to bend suddenly. opposite direction to occupy the position illustrated in 5a.
When the backrest 2 is gradually folded down to occupy positions 21, 22 the axis 7 is displaced correlatively and, consequently, the armrest occupies positions 51, 52, ---, for which it gradually disappears, it that is to say, it has a configuration which constantly adapts to the respective positions of the backrest and the seat. The length of the armrest and the position of the axes 6, 7 are obviously determined so that the armrest remains in a slightly compressed state when the backrest is brought in the extension of the seat.
The constituent blade of the armrest can either be made of metal or plastic, in particular resin reinforced with glass fibers or similar material.
The method of fixing the ends of the armrest may be different from that shown. It is possible in particular to use pins 6, 7 of cylindrical shape and to thread on each of them a split socket receiving the ends of the blade which constitutes the armrest.
