The present invention has for its object to find a forceps-like instrument for removing foreign bodies from the throat of a victim exposed to suffocation, the gripping ends of which are designed so that they can grip any foreign body that may have entered the throat. The risk of injury to the throat or throat and associated organs should be particularly low when using the instrument. To solve this problem, an instrument according to the definition of claim 1 is proposed. Particular advantageous embodiments of this instrument are the subject of the remaining claims.

Position when gripping the foreign body is indicated by chain lines.
Wie aus der Fig. 2 hervorgeht, The forceps-like instrument has a pair of handle arms 10, 10 which merge into a front curved arm part 12. Each arm part 12 has a rear straight section 14 which merges into the handle arm 10 at the location of an articulated connection between the two arms, which is formed by a pin 16. As can be seen from FIG. 2,
lässt sich das zangenartige Instrument scherenartig öffnen und schliessen. the pliers-like instrument can be opened and closed like scissors.
Each arm part 12 has a curve section 18 which runs along an arc angle of more than 90 ° on a circular arc. For the adult instrument size, the length of the circular arc is 100 ° 30 '. The pliers-like instrument is made of stainless steel wire with a diameter of 4 mm and each handle arm has a length of 89 mm. Each straight arm section 14 has a length of 41 mm and the radius of curvature of each curved arm part 18 is 60 mm. The boundaries of the curved section 18 are indicated by radius lines 20, 22 and the intermediate angle 24 is 100 ° 30 '. The exact mass was determined after careful and extensive examinations on a number of corpses, in the gullet of which foreign bodies were artificially inserted.
The child size of the instrument corresponds to the illustration in FIG. 3 is similarly designed with the difference that the radius of curvature of the bent arm sections 18 'is only 36.5 mm and the gripping disks 28' are somewhat smaller.
The outer end of each arm section 18 has a short straight part 26 and a gripping disk 28 formed in one piece. On its outside, the disk 28 is slightly convexly curved, so that a profile is obtained which minimizes the possibility of tissue damage when touching the instrument. The inside of each disc 28 is concave at 30, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 5. The surfaces 30 facing the foreign body to be gripped are provided with a series of parallel ribs or grooves 32, so that a secure gripping of the foreign body to be removed is ensured, in particular if this, e.g. with balls, smooth and hard.
The use of the instrument is explained in more detail below with reference to FIG. 6.
When food or other objects are deliberately devoured, they easily reach the esophagus E along the pharynx P and then the stomach (not shown), since the epiglottis EP closes the trachea T. However, if there is a risk of suffocation, the Epiglottis EP has failed to seal the trachea, and the entwined object or foreign body usually attaches to the vocal cords V in the enlarged upper end of the trachea or larynx L or continues to pass through the trachea the lungs.
Erdnüsse oder Erdnussstücke, so gelangt es über die Stimmbändern hinaus If the object is small enough, e.g. Peanuts or pieces of peanut, so it goes beyond the vocal cords

Die Entfernung des Objektes erfolgt dann normalerweise mit Hilfe eines Bronchoscopes. through the trachea to one or both bronchial tubes and then settles in a bronchiole in one of the lungs. An immediately life-threatening situation does not occur since sufficient air can reach the remaining part of the lung as well as the other lung. The object is then usually removed using a bronchoscope.
A critical emergency occurs when the object picked up by the throat is large enough to get stuck in the trachea or in the region of the vocal cords V without reaching a lung. In such a position of the foreign body, any air flow to and from the lungs is prevented. The result is irreversible brain damage or the patient can die within a short time if the object is not removed and the possibility of free breathing is restored.
An instrument according to the invention is only intended to be used as a last resort in an emergency after all other usual measures have been tried without success. In addition, the instrument should only be used by doctors or other specially selected people, as there is always a risk of injury to the pharynx and associated organs, e.g. the vocal cords, is given when a foreign body has settled in the throat. However, the instrument according to the invention has no sharp edges or protrusions that could pierce or cut through sensitive tissue of the throat, such as e.g. B. the soft palate, the epiglottis or the vocal cords, either when inserting or removing the instrument.
If the measures mentioned above to free the throat are not successful, the instrument according to the invention is used as follows: first the victim is placed on the back, his mouth is opened and the rescuer leads the left index finger into the mouth via the tongue into the throat . The tongue is then pulled to open the throat or throat further, making it easier to insert the instrument. The instrument is then taken in the right hand and opened as shown in FIG. 2. The instrument then slides slightly backward into the throat, with a disc 28 sliding along one side of the epiglottis E to minimize the possibility of tissue injury. Usually the foreign body can be felt, and the instrument is then closed around the foreign body and held securely when it is pulled out of the throat. If spontaneous breathing does not occur, the usual methods of resuscitation should be used immediately. A cardiac massage should also be started in the event of cardiac arrest.
The two instrument sizes, i.e. for adults and children, are packaged in suitable dimensions and sold together in a set to be kept in restaurants, schools, at home or in other places where such emergency situations can occur.
