Description
The present invention relates to a saw wire made of synthetic high polymers and abrasive abrasive grains.
One of the oldest forms of the saw is the thread saw, in which a spun yarn is provided with a slurry of sand in the water. Such saws are widely used in appropriately mechanized form in stone and marble quarries. Instead of spun yarns made from the natural fibers flax or cotton, steel wire ropes of a few mm in diameter are mostly used here. The slurry of the emery sand in the water naturally gets into all the machine parts of the saw and leads to severe abrasion and frequent machine malfunctions.
Attempts are therefore being made to increasingly equip such saws with saw wires that carry the abrasive material embedded directly on their surface. In DE-PS 916 143 e.g. Steel wires with an electrogalvanically fastened diamond grains are proposed, in DOS 2142 002 further embodiments for monofilament and multifilament carriers for abrasive material are described.
In addition to coarse saws for quarries, thread saws are also used in the semiconductor industry and in optics, mainly for brittle materials, such as is described in DOS 2 359 859. Here too, preference is given to steel wires with an abrasive material, e.g. Diamond, as used e.g. are described in the brochure of Laser Technology Inc. from 1972.
Such diamond studded steel wires are complex to manufacture, the expensive diamond grains detach from the carrier during sawing and are lost.
The present invention overcomes the disadvantages of metal wires through saw wires made of synthetic high polymers and abrasive abrasive grains, characterized in that the saw wire is formed as a monofilament from a synthetic high polymer with an incorporated addition of 0.3 to 10 percent by weight abrasive grains.
Linear polyesters are preferably used as synthetic high polymers, particularly preferably polyethylene terephthalate without or only with little modification additives and a specific viscosity of more than 0.7 in the saw wire. (The specific viscosity is measured on a 1% by weight solution of the polyester of a phenol-tetrachloroethane mixture in a weight ratio of 3: 2 at 25 ° C.)
Boron carbide and other carbides are preferred as abrasive grains, but diamond is also used for special purposes.
The preferred concentration for boron carbide has been found to be 3-7 percent by weight, based on the polymer, and the grain size of the abrasive grains is preferably 0.1 to 0.4 times the saw wire diameter.
The diameter of the monofilaments is preferably 0.1 to 3 mm.
Surprisingly, the sawing effect of saws with abrasive grain does not increase with the concentration of the grains on the surface, but there are optimal values gained from experience for the various sawing problems. The mechanical properties of the monofilament naturally deteriorate with increasing concentration of the abrasive grains in the volume.
The grain size of the abrasive grains is usually chosen to be as large as possible, but must also be adapted to the special sawing problem and the saw wire diameter used.
A larger diameter of the saw wire results in a higher mechanical strength but also an increase in the sawing work, since more sawdust is removed. With high-quality saw material, the loss of material may make it necessary to use the thinnest wire possible.
Fig. 2 zeigt einen handelsüblichen Stahldraht 2 mit Schleifkornbesatz 3. Figures 1 and 2 show schematic cross sections through saw wires with comparable sawing action, i.e. same surface finish with abrasive grain. 1 corresponds to a saw wire according to the invention, which consists of the polymer 1 and the abrasive grain 3. 2 shows a commercially available steel wire 2 with abrasive grain trimmings 3.
A great advantage of the saw wire according to the invention lies in its simple manufacture; the abrasive grains can e.g. in polycondensation or spinning, as suggested in U.S. Patent 3,522,342. This application describes the manufacture of abrasive bristles for emery discs.
Surprisingly, it has been found that the sawing power of a saw wire according to the invention made of polyethylene terephthalate with an addition of 6 percent by weight of boron carbide exceeded that of a commercially available diamond-studded steel wire.
Even more surprising is the long service life of the saw wire according to the invention, which is evident from the examples.
In contrast to steel wire, the sawing effect of the saw wire according to the invention is not lost in that the abrasive grains come off, but rather that the abrasive grains are pressed into the monofilament. However, a large part of the abrasive grain remains accessible for reprocessing and can be used again and again. This advantage is particularly important for high-quality abrasive grains such as diamond.
The mechanical efficiency of the saw wires according to the invention was also surprising, neither elongation was observed nor a splicing of the monofilament by the sawing work. The longitudinal strength decreased by 30% compared to a pure polyethylene terephthalate monofilament with 3% by weight boron carbide additive, and around 50% with 6% by weight, but was sufficiently good for use as saw wire, so that no attempt to saw had to be stopped prematurely due to mechanical damage.
The surprisingly low friction coefficient of the saw wire according to the invention, which leads to low heat development, is also interesting for some areas of application

Lange, Melliand Textilbe-richte 56 [1975] S. 348-352,530-535 und 610-612). leads when sawing. The coefficient of friction of a saw wire according to the invention made of polyethylene terephthalate with 6 percent by weight boron carbide with a grain size of about 60 p. and a wire diameter of about 0.35 mm was only 0.39 against steel (definition see Lange, Melliand Textile Reports 56 [1975] pp. 348-352, 530-535 and 610-612).
The saw wire according to the invention thus has at least the same sawing effect and service life as a steel wire with abrasive grain, but can be more easily adapted to the special sawing problem due to its simple manufacture. With the saw wire according to the invention, the abrasive grains can be refurbished and used again.
beim bekannten Stahldraht geht der Schleifkornbesatz dagegen durch das Sägen verloren. in the known steel wire, however, the abrasive grain is lost through sawing.

Die mittlere Korngrösse lag bei 62 u.
