5. Device according to claim 1, characterized in that the drive means exit constituted by an electric motor.
The present invention relates to a protection device, in particular for a motor vehicle.
A protective cover for a motor vehicle is known which is placed on the vehicle to protect it, in summer, against overheating due to the sun's rays and, in winter, against frost and snow, and which is fixed by cords. The fitting of such a cover can be done by a single person, provided that there is enough space around the vehicle. Its removal and folding, especially when it is frosted or covered with snow, requires two people. Finally, if it is stored in the trunk of the vehicle, it considerably reduces the useful volume.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks and to provide a protection device which is always at hand and can be stored automatically.
This device comprises a cover, one end of which is provided with a gripping bar and the other of which is fixed to a hollow rotary shaft housed in a tube, the rotary shaft being connected to drive means which allow the automatic removal of the cover from the tube.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the device which is the subject of the invention for protecting a motor vehicle parked outdoors.
Fig. 1 is a view of the motor vehicle fitted with the protection device with, in dotted lines, the cover in place,
fig. 2 is a view of the unrolled cover, its tube and its gripping bar,
fig. 3 is a section through the tube in which the winding shaft is housed, the cover being unrolled,
fig. 4 is a view of the spring receiving housing, the latter being relaxed,
fig. 5 is a section through one end of the tube, and
fig. 6 is a view of the tube showing the slot through which the cover passes.
The protection device shown in fig. 1 is intended to protect a motor vehicle 1 from bad weather and comprises a tube 2 removably mounted at the rear of the vehicle and under the latter. The tube 2 contains a rotary hollow shaft 3 on which is wrapped a cover 4 which is retained on the latter by one of its longitudinal ends (fig. 2 and 3). The other longitudinal end is provided with a gripping bar 5 intended to be hung on the front of the vehicle 1, for example under the bumper.
The cover 4 is made of a strip of flexible and resistant plastic material and carries, practically mid-length and on each side, rectangular tabs 6 provided, at their free ends, with flexible magnetic strips 7 which allow, by pressing against the body, protect the vehicle windows. The length of the legs 6 corresponds to the half-width of the cover 4 so that, when the latter is stored, the two legs 6 can be folded towards one another and the flexible magnetic strips 7 overlap and act as means of restraint.
The cover 4 exits through a longitudinal slot 8 from the tube 2. The edges of said slot are covered with tubes 9 (fig. 3, 6) made of plastic, tubes which, on the one hand, protect the cover 4 from the sharp edges of the tube 2 and, on the other hand, prevent mud and rain from entering the interior of tube 2, thanks to the bar 5 which is pressed against the flanges 9 and provides sealing.
Furthermore, elastic staples 10 are fixed near the ends of the longitudinal slot 8 to firmly hold the gripping bar 5.
The tube 2 contains the shaft 3 on which the cover 4 is wound and has a longitudinal groove 1 1 (fig. 3) in which is housed a rod 12 around which is welded one of the ends of the cover 4 and which is retained, by its ends, in rings 13 (fig. 5). Each ring 13 is assembled in rotation to the shaft 3 and to its pin 14. The latter extends towards the outside of the hollow shaft 3 and passes through an intermediate wall 15 serving as a bearing for said pin 14 and to the shaft hollow 3. Each end of the pins 14 is provided with a square 16 which receives a socket 17 on which is fixed the internal end of a spiral spring 18. The other end of the spring 18 is riveted on the internal wall of a housing 19.
The latter carries eyelets 20 which allow, on the one hand, to fix the housing 19 on the intermediate wall 15 by means of screws 21 and, on the other hand, to re-tension the spring 18 in case it has become slack, by moving the housing 19 against the force of the spring 18. The two ends of the tube 2 are closed by covers 22.
Instead of using spiral springs 18, provision could be made for helical springs housed in the hollow shaft 3 or an electric motor driven by the vehicle battery.
To protect the motor vehicle 1 from the weather, grab the bar 5, remove the staples 10, pull the cover 4 over the vehicle, hang the bar 5 at the front of the latter, fold the tabs 6 and apply the magnetic strips 7 against the body. By pulling the cover 4 out of the tube 2, the springs 18 are armed and allow, when the cover 4 is removed after having folded the tabs one on the other, to automatically store it in the tube 2.
It is clear that the device described can be mounted at the front instead of the rear of the motor vehicle. In addition, it can be used to protect fishing or pleasure boats.
