Description
The invention relates to a method for keeping internal or external surfaces at risk of contamination, wherein a protective layer is applied to the surfaces to be treated, if necessary after basic cleaning, and the dirt is removed after contamination, which is characterized in that a film-forming composition in the form of a solution or dispersion which contains a film former which, after drying, forms a water-soluble, water-insoluble, water-insoluble but swellable, water-insoluble or water-insoluble but water-swellable protective layer, applied to the surface to be treated and left to dry and the surface thus obtained, provided with a protective layer, is treated after cleaning for cleaning with a film-forming composition or with water or an aqueous medium, at least part of the protective layer being left.
The film-forming composition is applied to the surface to be treated, preferably in the form of an aqueous solution or dispersion which may contain organic solvents in the medium. It can also be used in the form of a solution or dispersion in an organic solvent. Some examples are: aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, alcohols, pyrrolidones and / or ethers. When choosing the solution or Dispersants must be compatible with both the film former and the surface to be treated. Which type of composition is preferred depends on the solubility or dispersion properties of the film formers used. The use of film-forming compositions with organic solvents is preferred in the formation of water-insoluble protective layers.
Preference is given to film-forming compositions which form a moisture-containing and / or moisture-absorbing film after application.
With the measure of subjecting the surface provided with a protective layer to a cleaning treatment with the film-forming composition after being soiled, the protective layer surface, ie. H. in one operation, a partial removal of the protective layer together with the dirt - the dirt largely sticks to the application device for the film former - and new application of the film former composition is effected.
This creates a connection between the original, i.e. H. the existing protective layer and the newly applied film-forming composition, and a uniform protective layer is formed.
As an intermediate measure, the exposed side of the protective layer can be cleaned with a neutral, alkaline or acidic aqueous medium, which can contain surface-active agents and / or organic solvents, before the cleaning treatment of the soiled protective layer with film-forming composition. Such cleaning is recommended if the contamination is very heavy or if you want to save on the film former composition used for cleaning.
The advantage that can be achieved with the method according to the invention, apart from the saving of one work step already mentioned, is that the surface at risk of contamination is permanently coated with a protective layer, which here acts as a separating layer between surface and dirt. This permanent protective layer ensures that the surface to be treated is protected and kept clean better than with the previously known methods.
The method according to the invention can be applied to practically all types of surfaces. Some examples of this are glass, ceramics, metals, plastics, concrete, wood, carpets, fabrics.
The choice of film formers depends on whether the surface to be protected is an inside or outside surface.
So with inner surfaces to be protected, e.g. B. tiled walls, floors, floor coverings, windows, the film formers, which form a water-soluble protective layer after drying, the preference given to protect external surfaces, for. B. exterior windows, house facades, means of transport, on the other hand, the film formers, which after drying a difficult to insoluble and / or swellable in water, d. The choice of film formers also depends on the desired degree of water influenceability of the protective layer obtained after the film formers have dried. Available film makers to select those that are best suited for the intended purpose: use on exterior or interior surfaces.
Einige Beispiele für geeignete Filmbildner sind: Celluloseäther, Alginate, Polyacrylate, Polyvinylalkohol, Polyvinylpyr-rolidon, Dextrine, Silicate, Gummiarabicum, Tragant, Dime-thylhydantoin-Formaldehyd-Kondensate, Harnstoff-Formal-dehyd-Kondensate und deren Derivate, Sulfitablaugen, Oxyli-gnin, Polymethylvinyläther-Maleinsäureanhydrid, Schellack, Polyester, Phenolharze, Polyamide, Copolymerisate von Vinyl-acetat, Ketonharze, Siliconharze, Melaminharze, Kautschukharze, oxydierende Harze allein oder im Gemisch. Some examples of suitable film formers are: cellulose ethers, alginates, polyacrylates, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, dextrins, silicates, gum arabic, tragacanth, dimethylhydantoin-formaldehyde condensates, urea-formaldehyde condensates and their derivatives, sulfite liquors, oxyli- Gnin, polymethyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride, shellac, polyester, phenolic resins, polyamides, copolymers of vinyl acetate, ketone resins, silicone resins, melamine resins, rubber resins, oxidizing resins alone or in a mixture.
The proportions in which the film formers are used in the film formation composition can vary within wide ranges. They depend on the type of film former (s) used and amount to 0.5 to 80% by weight - based on the composition.
The properties of the protective layer obtained after the film formers have dried on, such as water solubility, water swellability, moisture content - which can also be controlled via hygroscopicity - can be adjusted by additives to the intended use in each case, elasticity, plasticity, transparency and / or adhesive strength .
Some examples of additives that may be included in the film-forming composition are:
zur Verbesserung der Plastizität oder der Haftfestigkeit der Schutzschicht: Alkohole, Glykole, Glykoläther, Pyrrolidon, zur Veränderung der Verlaufeigenschaften der Filmbildnerkomposition sowie der Quellfähigkeit und der Trocknungsgeschwindigkeit der Schutzschicht: Tenside und Lösungsmittel, zur Erhöhung der Wasserfestigkeit einer Schutzschicht auf der Basis von insbesondere Celluloseäthern, Alginaten, Dextrinen: Aldehyde, Aldehyd-abspaltende Stoffe, Maleinsäureanhydrid, Melaminharze, Ameisensäure, Pyrrolidon, Chromsalze, Zinksalze, to improve the plasticity or the adhesive strength of the protective layer: alcohols, glycols, glycol ether, pyrrolidone, to change the flow properties of the film-forming composition and the swellability and drying speed of the protective layer: surfactants and solvents, to increase the water resistance of a protective layer based on cellulose ethers in particular, Alginates, dextrins: aldehydes, aldehyde-releasing substances, maleic anhydride, melamine resins, formic acid, pyrrolidone, chromium salts, zinc salts,

The choice of the film-forming composition used for cleaning the protective layer, as well as the aqueous media suitable for the intermediate cleaning, also depends on the choice of film-forming agent or its degree of water solubility or water swellability.
While essentially the same film-forming composition is used for cleaning the protective layer as for the formation of the protective layer, the method of the invention also opens up the possibility of changing the film-forming composition, e.g. B. to subsequently modify the solubility properties of the protective layer. The prerequisite is that the film-forming composition used for cleaning the protective layer is compatible with the protective layer to be cleaned.
This variant of the method can be particularly important when it comes to keeping external surfaces clean, in particular house facades, metal window frames, advertising surfaces. Such external surfaces, which are usually not completely resistant to the exhaust gases, dirt and grease or oil particles contained in the city air, can - if necessary after thorough cleaning - first by treating them with a film-forming composition that dries to form a water-insoluble, possibly swellable protective layer. protected against atmospheric influences including the dirt contained in the air. This water-insoluble protective layer can then be modified in water solubility by a cleaning surface treatment with a film-forming composition which dissolves the protective layer and forms a well-adhering film with it in such a way that it becomes accessible for intermediate cleaning with aqueous acidic or alkaline media without the Protective layer is completely removed.
If the protective layer is made water-soluble on its free outer surface or in a weakly acidic environment, e.g. B. the exhaust gas containing city air, water-soluble salts can form, intermediate cleaning can be largely saved, since to a certain extent self-cleaning occurs when it rains. It is only necessary to carry out a cleaning surface treatment with the film-forming composition for the base layer or with the film-forming composition for the surface layer at a relatively large distance, as required.
15 An example of film-forming compositions which form a water-soluble protective layer after drying in a weakly acidic environment contains phenolic resins.
The choice of the film formers also depends on the choice of the aqueous media used for the intermediate cleaning of the protective layer. If the protective layer is soluble or dispersible in water, which should be the case in particular with the protective layers applied to inner surfaces, the intermediate cleaning is expediently carried out with water, to which — if necessary — the usual detergents, etc. may be added. If the protective layer is sparingly to insoluble in water, the intermediate cleaning - in adaptation to the special solubility properties of the protective layer to be surface-cleaned - is carried out with an aqueous medium containing the usual detergents, surfactants and organic solvents, which is more common Is made alkaline, e.g. B. with alkalis, ammonia, amines, or which is acidified in the usual way, treated.
In the case of protective layers which swell in water, the swellability can be accelerated by mechanical treatment with brushes under the supply of water.
As already indicated above, the method of the invention can be successfully applied to both cleaning external surfaces and internal surfaces. 40 The exterior surfaces include all surfaces that are exposed to the weather and the dirt and pollutants contained in the air. Some examples of this are: House facades, e.g. B. of metal, anodized aluminum, window metal frame, outer surfaces 45 of windows, shop windows, advertising space, outer surfaces of means of transport, such as railways, trams, motor vehicles, such as passenger cars, trucks, buses, airplanes, ships, traffic signs, animal cages.
The proportions in which these additives are added to the film-forming composition can vary within a wide range. They depend on the type and the amount of the desired effect with the addition. They are 0.01 to 15, preferably 0.05 to 10, in particular 0.05 to 7% by weight, based on the film-forming composition.
It has furthermore been found that additives which are added to the film-forming composition can also give the protective layer obtained after the drying up, activities in relation to the respective dirt, both in relation to the dirt which is deposited on the surface after the coating has, as well as compared to that which comes from the uncoated surface, provided that the film-forming composition is applied to a contaminated surface.
The proportions in which these additives are used can vary within a wide range. They depend on the additive and the desired effect. They are usually 0.5 to 25, preferably 0.5 to 12, in particular 0.5 to 15% by weight, based on the film-forming composition.
Is the dirt in question z. B. whirled up soil, metal oxides, i.e. dirt that plays a major role in transportation, especially in rail vehicles, and is sensitive to acid, or if the dirt is also the acid-sensitive calcium deposits in food-producing companies, then it has to be considered Proven to add acidic additives to the film-forming compositions. Some examples of these are: acidic phosphoric acid esters, optionally halogenated acetic acid, citronic acid, formic acid, glycolic acid, gluconic acid, oxalic acid, boric acid, phosphonic acid, phosphoric acid, phosphorous acid, hypophosphorous acid, benzoic acid.
Such acidic additives contained in protective layers act - as was found - for. B. in rail vehicles, such as railroad locomotives and railroad cars, already during vehicle use, i.e. between cleaning treatments, on the dirt, so that when cleaning the dirty protective layer with the film-forming composition acid-sensitive dirt, such as metal oxides (rust), with significantly less acid is removed more easily and completely than is the case with the previously known cleaning methods.
In the previously known methods, for. B. the rail vehicles between two uses for external cleaning with hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid and / or oxalic acid.
However, this acid washing has the following disadvantages: For reasons of corrosion, hydrochloric acid must not be used on locomotives and cars with stainless steel or aluminum cladding. But also in the remaining areas, e.g. B. in window frames, is with corrosion, for. B. to be expected by rusting. Phosphoric acid has only a weak cleaning effect, tends to form aluminum and calcium phosphates, which lead to efflorescence both on the wagon wall and on the bogies, and must be used even in the case of light soiling in high concentrations. The use of oxalic acid is questionable for reasons of occupational safety. In addition, all three acids must be neutralized in the sewage treatment plants, with their salts, the chlorides, phosphates, oxalates, remaining in the wastewater. In addition, the surfactants contained in the cleaners lead to the re-emulsification of the oil contained in the dirty water.
Apart from this, fats and the protein derived from mosquitoes as well as lubricating greases and lubricating oils are difficult to remove from acidic cleaners.
Alkaline cleaning agents are more suitable for this, however, they lead to severe signs of corrosion on window frames, in particular made of aluminum or aluminum alloys, and lead to changes in the paints - including the two-component paints. In addition, they cannot be used to remove the metal oxides that occur to a considerable extent in rail vehicles. The alkaline cleaning agents must also be neutralized in the sewage treatment plants, which is associated with the undesirable salt formation. In addition, when using alkaline cleaning agents, especially those containing ammonia, protective masks have to be used.
The combination of acidic cleaner with alkaline cleaner required for complete cleaning according to the previously known methods not only requires a lot of work, but also leads - over time - to damage to the material to be cleaned and to impairment of concrete surfaces, pipes, tanks and sewage treatment plants. In addition, the cleaning of metal oxides, in particular rust, achieved in this way is unsatisfactory.
Compared to this previously known cleaning method, the method of the invention is characterized by a simpler procedure - for removing the acid-sensitive dirt, such as rust, etc.; only a cleaning treatment with a film-forming composition or with an aqueous medium is required, provided the protective layer is thick enough so that it is not completely removed, by a significantly lower wastewater load and by a reliable protection of the surfaces exposed to the pollution caused by the Measure, subjecting only the surface of the protective layer to a cleaning treatment is permanently protected.
In addition, by combining the additives mentioned above, the effect of the additives on the dirt can be adapted to the respective conditions. So it has proven to be advantageous to one of the more difficult evaporating acids, for. B. acidic phosphoric acid ester to combine with the easily evaporating formic acid. The very active formic acid exerts - until it evaporates - an initial effect on the acid-sensitive dirt. B. part of the metal oxides in soluble formates and thus facilitates the attack and the effect z. B the slower evaporating acidic phosphoric acid ester. Instead of formic acid, other rapidly evaporating acids which form soluble salts with metal oxides can also be used.
In order for the additives to have their full effect on the dirt, the protective layer should contain moisture that either originates from the manufacture or can be subsequently absorbed from the air.
If the method according to the invention is to be used to keep surfaces clean which are primarily exposed to contamination by substances with a basic reaction, such as fats, protein substances, etc., it has proven expedient to add additives with activities to fats, protein substances, lubricating oils, etc. to the film-forming compositions to add. Some examples of such, usually basic additives are: alkali metal hydroxides, alkanolamines, phosphates, silicates and / or gluconates, carboxylic acid salts, carboxylic acid amides.
Diese Zusätze werden vorzugsweise Filmbildnerkomposi- These additives are preferably film-forming compositions.

Film-forming compositions which may contain these additives can be used to particular advantage for keeping reflective, high-gloss or transparent surfaces, e.g. B. use window panes. Are z. B. the window panes - after a basic cleaning - provided with a protective layer, a cleaning surface treatment of the protective layer with the film-forming composition is sufficient for cleaning the window panes or - if the protective layer still has a sufficient thickness - with water to get clear panes. The annoying dry rubbing of the panes is eliminated. This is achieved in that the cleaning treatment with the film-forming solution or with water in the form of z. B. dust particles on the surface of dirt in the object used to apply the cleaning liquid, for. B. wipe, brush, sponge, etc., gets stuck, and the dirt remaining in the form of fats and oils and fingerprints on the protective layer - as long as it does not also stick to the applicator - into the solution caused by the cleaning treatment with the film-forming composition or water until the protective layer is softened and becomes invisible when the protective layer dries.
The method according to the invention can also be successfully used to keep toilets and wet rooms, such as bathrooms, clean. In this case, film-forming compositions are also used on interior surfaces, which form a protective layer that is difficult to insoluble in water but swellable in water when dried. If you add disinfectants and / or microbiocides to the film-forming composition, you can e.g. B. in this way counteract the athlete's foot commonly found in baths: Trichophyton mentagrophytes, since the protective layer at least swells when touched with wet feet, so that the disinfectant can be effective. The suitable disinfectants and / or microbiocides should - in order to have the longest possible effect - have the lowest possible vapor pressure under the prevailing conditions. Other additives for wet rooms are: complexing agents, chelates, sequestering agents that work against water hardness.
Analogously, when using the method according to the invention in the sanitary, medical and paramedical field, e.g. B. intensive care units, operating theaters, using film-forming compositions containing microbiocides and / or disinfectants, the permanent sterility necessary for these areas can be achieved.
If the inventive method for keeping metal surfaces clean, eg. B. those made of iron and aluminum are used, which - apart from the usual pollution from the outside - are subject to self-oxidation favored by the pollutants in the air, film-forming compositions containing nitric acid, nitrous acid or salts of these acids are used as additives.
When using film-forming compositions which are cellulose ethers or cationic resins, e.g. B. phenolic resins, contain and react acidic or are acidified, to keep aluminum or iron surfaces clean, effective corrosion protection can be achieved with the application of the protective layer without further addition.
