Abstract

A liquid-crystal material (11) is placed between two substrates (13, 17) which each bear an electrode pattern (14, 19). A magnesium fluoride coating (16, 21) is deposited on the electrodes (14, 19) and the substrates (13, 17) and is scored by scratching along a preferred direction of alignment of the molecules of the material (11). A leaktight glass seal (22), formed at an elevated temperature, isolates the material (11). This field-effect liquid-crystal display device may be subjected to elevated temperatures during mounting, enabling a leaktight joint to be formed and guaranteeing a long life for the device. <IMAGE>
