Abstract
The method uses a road infrastructure formed by pairs of magnetic barriers and a detector associated with electronic circuits provided on the vehicle. A tachometric pick-up provides a train of pulses whose frequency is a function of the instantaneous speed of the vehicle. The pulses of this train appearing between two validated pulses coming from a pair of magnetic barriers are counted. The time taken for the vehicle to cross this pair of barriers is measured. The distance separating the barriers is deduced therefrom and from this information, and a reference time, the permitted limit speed is determined and displayed in the vehicle. The installation comprises pairs of magnetic barriers embedded in the roadway and on the vehicle, a detector (2, 6) supplying pulses when the barriers are crossed, a tachometric pick-up (9) providing speed pulses, a device (8) for counting the speed pulses, a device (8) for measuring the time between two pulses from the magnetic barriers, a device (8) for calculating corresponding distance information, a device (8) for converting this distance into a permitted limit speed, and a device (14, 15) for displaying this speed, which allows the driver to be informed continuously of the permitted limit speed on his current route (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
