fig.
fig.
barreau 16 reste immobile (voir fig. 6).
The invention relates to an electrical circuit breaker comprising a molded case in which are housed a fixed contact, a movable contact and a movement control mechanism of said movable contact comprising an automatic release lever, an operating handle having a first stable position corresponding to a closed position of the contacts and a second stable position corresponding to an open position of the contacts, and a stopper locking device capable of limiting the movement of the handle when the contacts are in the closed position.
US Patent No. 3605052 describes a circuit breaker of the type mentioned, in which the limited displacement amplitude of the handle, authorized by the stopper, is sufficient to exert a breaking force on a toggle for controlling the movable contact, but insufficient for move the line of action of a return spring of the handle so as to urge it towards the open position. The position of the handle thus provides an indication of the position of the contacts. The authorized displacement amplitude corresponds to most of the handle travel and, in the event of play or excessive strain, the handle can be forced and padlocked into the open position even though the welded contacts are in the closed position.
This device does not provide a reliable indication of the position of the contacts, in particular of the soldering of the contacts.
Another circuit breaker, known from French patent N "2025422, is equipped with a device preventing resetting of the circuit breaker when the contacts are welded. The handle can be moved freely, but does not remain in the armed position if the contacts are not. Not open The indication provided by the position of the handle on the position of the contacts is equivocal, as the handle may be inadvertently padlocked in the open position while the contacts are soldered.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks and to allow the production of a circuit breaker whose position of the handle unequivocally reflects that of the contacts.
The circuit breaker according to the invention is characterized by the fact that it comprises a member for actuating said trip lever, associated with the handle, so as to cause automatic tripping at the start of the travel stroke of the handle from said first position. towards said second position, said stopper locking device being arranged to allow sufficient movement of the handle to cause said release.
The travel of the handle necessary for tripping is small and the arrangement may be such that the operating handle is locked in the closed position in the event of welding of the contacts and thus provides a positive indication of the malfunction of the circuit breaker. The locking of the handle instantly attracts the attention of the operator and also prevents any padlocking of the handle in the open position.
Locking is ensured by a stopper which can be associated with or, optionally, directly attached to the mobile circuit breaker assembly, so as to interfere with the movement path of the handle when the contacts are in the closed position.
Other advantages of the invention will emerge from the description which follows of various embodiments given by way of example and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

;
figs. 14 and 15 are schematic elevational views of a circuit breaker, respectively in the closed position and in the welded position, according to another variant embodiment.
In the figures, a fixed contact 10 of one pole of a multipole circuit breaker cooperates with a movable contact 12 carried by the end of a contact arm 14 integral with a bar 16. In the case of a three-pole circuit breaker , the other two poles are juxtaposed on either side of this first in planes parallel to that of FIG. 6. The three poles are identical, and each pair of contacts is associated with an arc extinguishing chamber (not shown). The assembly is housed in a molded insulating housing (not shown) having a passage opening for a lever or operating handle 18, and input and output terminals of the device. The handle 18 belongs to a control mechanism common to the three poles and advantageously associated with the central pole, the movement being transmitted to the other poles by the bar 16.
The control mechanism comprises a toggle with pivot axis 20, on which are articulated two rods 22, 24, one of which, 2 ?, has its opposite end articulated at 26 to the contact arm 14 and the other of which, 24 , is articulated on a trigger lever 28 at a point 30. A tension spring 32 is anchored to the axis 20 and, by the opposite end 34, to the operating handle 18. The tension spring 32 urges the opposite end 40 of handle 18, which is notched in a V, resting on a fixed pivot 42 forming a pivot point. The trigger lever 28 is pivotally mounted on a fixed axis 44 and comprises an arm terminating in a locking beak 46 capable of cooperating with a latch 48 mounted in free rotation on an axis 50 and having an arm 52 cooperating with a projection 54 of a trip bar 56 common to the three poles.
The trip bar 56 is controlled by thermal and electromagnetic trip units (not shown) and its pivoting in the trigonometric direction, in FIG. 8, erases the projection 54 and releases the hook 48 which pivots clockwise on the axis 50 under the action of a spring 58, by unlocking the release lever 28. Under the action of the spring 32. the release lever 28 pivots around the axis 44 by moving the articulation point 30 of the rod 24 to the left in FIG. 8, which causes the line dead center of the pins 26, 20, 30 of the toggle lever to be exceeded and the latter to break allowing the contact arm 14 to pivot and the contacts 10, 12 to open (see fig. . 10).
Such a circuit breaker is well known and, for example, described in the aforementioned French patent to which reference will advantageously be made for further details. It suffices to recall that the arming is carried out by a displacement of the operating handle 18 in the direction of rotation of the needles of a watch, the closing of the contacts being carried out by a reverse rotation towards the position illustrated in FIG. . 8.
The circuit breaker is equipped with a locking device 60 of the operating handle 18 comprising a stop 62 mounted to rotate on a fixed axis 64 and cooperating with a projection 66 of the handle 18. The axis 64 advantageously coincides with the axis 50 of articulation of the attachment 48. The stop 62 is biased in the active position by a spring 68 of the clothespin type resting on a member 70. The bar 16 carries, to the right of the stop 62, a cam 72 capable of to cooperate with a projection 74 of the stop 62 to move the latter against the spring 68 to an unlocking position of the handle 18. For a position of the bar 16, corresponding to the contacts 10, 12 closed, the stop 62 is in the active position and prevents movement of the operating handle 18 towards the open position. A limited dead stroke is permitted for the reasons set out below.
Upon opening of the contacts 10, 12 and a corresponding rotation of the bar 16, the cam 72 raises the stop 62, unlocking the handle 18 which can then be moved freely to the open position (see FIG. 11).
The circuit breaker is provided with a manual tripping device comprising an actuating rod 76 of which one of the ends 78 is articulated on the handle 18 and of which the opposite end 80 is capable of cooperating with a rocker arm 82 of which the opposite arm 84 in the form of a tooth engages in a toothed sector 86 integral with the trigger bar 56. A spring 88 urges the end 80 of the rod 76 resting on the rocker arm 82, the connection between the latter members 80, 82 being able to be broken after pivoting of the rocker arm 82, so as to allow continued movement of the handle 18 after release
caused by the rotation of the trip bar 56.
The circuit breaker illustrated in fig. I at 1 1 works from
as follows:
With the circuit breaker in the armed-closed position, shown in
fig. 4 and 8.1 manual opening is caused by movement
to the right in the figures of the handle 18. Such a movement,
authorized by the small withdrawal of the stop 62 and the dead travel
corresponding, is transmitted by the rod 76 to the rocker arm 82, which
rotates clockwise by causing, by
the gear 84, 86, the trigger bar 56 rotating in
opposite direction. The rotation of the trigger bar 56
causes the opening of contacts 10, 12 exactly the same
way that during an automatic trigger, for example
controlled by the thermal release.
The position of the different
circuit breaker elements after opening contacts 10, 12 is
shown in fig. 10 and 11, and it should be noted that the rotation
of the bar 16 caused the displacement of the stop 62
rusting the handle 18. The latter can then be moved
freely to the armed-open position, shown in fig. 5
and 9 and, in a second stage. towards the armed-closed position,
shown in fig. 4 and 8. These two operations are well known
and it is unnecessary to describe them again.
In the case of contacts 10, 12 welded, the displacement of the
operating handle 18 from the position illustrated by
fig. 8, army-closed, causes as shown above
a rotation of the trigger bar 56 and an unlocking
release lever 28. The contacts 10, 12 being soldered, the
contact arm 14 cannot be moved by the spring 32 and the
bar 16 remains stationary (see fig. 6). Cam 72 does not lift
the stop 62, which remains in the active locking position of the
operating handle 18. Any attempt to move for
tracking of the handle 18 towards the cocking position is prevented
by the stop 62.
The small authorized travel of the handle 18
inevitably attracts the attention of the operator and, in the event
a padlockable handle, any locking by setting
place of the padlock is prevented. We thus have a certainty
the proper functioning of the device when the handle 18 can
be moved freely and brought into the armed-open position.
The device 60 with stop 62 ensures a robust locking and
prevents any forced movement of the operating handle 18.
The locking device can be incorporated into standard circuit breakers without significant modification of the other components of the circuit breaker.
Fig. 12 illustrates an alternative embodiment of the locking device, in which the support bar 16 of the contact arms carries a stop in the form of an angle bar 90, one of the wings of which is capable of cooperating with a projection 92 of a lever 94 connecting the operating handle 18 to a trigger block (not shown). In the closed position of the contacts 10, 12, the stop 90 opposes a movement of the handle 18 in the open position, the coming into action of the stop 90 in contact with the projection 92 taking place after a limited travel sufficient to cause the circuit breaker to trip by means of the lever 94. It is easy to see that this device comprises a smaller number of parts, the cam 72 and stop 62 assembly being replaced by a single stop 90.
It nevertheless has the disadvantage of directly transferring the force exerted on the handle 18 on the bar 16, which must of course be adapted to this force. It is obvious that the locking can be exerted on any member integral with or secured to the handle 18 and, in the example illustrated by FIG. 12, use is made of the presence of a lever 94 providing a connection between the trigger block and the handle 18 to ensure manual triggering by the handle 18.
The unlocking of the handle 18 is not necessarily derived from the rotation of the bar 16 and, by way of example, FIG. 13 illustrates an embodiment in which the trigger lever 28 comprises a lug 96 capable of cooperating with a finger 98 secured to the handle 18. Referring to FIGS. 6, 8 and 10, it can be seen that the position taken by the trip lever 28 in the armed-welded position of the circuit breaker is very close to the corresponding position when the circuit breaker is closed, but differs significantly from that taken for the open disarmed circuit breaker.
The position of the trip lever 28 is therefore representative of a welding of the contacts and the position of the lug 96 can be chosen so as to interfere with the trajectory of the finger 98 of the handle 18, to lock the latter, when the circuit breaker is disarmed welded and, on the other hand, allow free pivoting of the handle 18, during normal opening of the contacts 10, 12.
The operation is identical to that described above, in particular the triggering at the start of the travel stroke of the handle 18.
Figs. 14 and 15 illustrate another variant, in which the rod 24, articulated to the trigger lever 28 at point 30, is extended beyond the latter point by a spout 100 whose end, shaped as a stop surface 102, is located opposite a folded rim 104 of the handle 18. The rim 104 is capable of cooperating, in a manner well known per se, with the trip lever 28 with a view to resetting the circuit breaker. In the closed position of the contacts, shown in fig. 14. the abutment surface 102 is spaced from the rim 104 by a distance allowing a small pivoting travel of the handle 18 in the direction indicated by the arrow F, corresponding to an opening of the contacts.
This limited travel of the handle 18 is sufficient for the triggering of the latch 48 releasing the trigger lever 28 and thus causing the opening of the contacts 10, 12. It is nevertheless insufficient for a breaking control of the link rod 22. , 24, the line of action of the spring 32 not exceeding the line of action of the rod 24. In the position illustrated in FIG. 15 of welded contacts and attempting to open the circuit breaker by moving the handle 18 in the direction indicated by the arrow F, the flange 104 abuts against the surface 102 by exerting on the rod 24 a torque tending to make it pivot in clockwise, reinforcing the maintenance in the extended position of the knee switch 22, 24.
Any attempt to force open the welded contacts by acting on the handle 18 is therefore excluded and the risk of maintaining a circuit breaker with damaged contacts in service is considerably reduced.
It is unnecessary to describe the operation of the circuit breaker, which is similar to that described above, the manual opening of the contacts being effected by tripping caused by the actuating rod 76 releasing the tripping lever 28. The breaking of the the toggle rod 22, 24 causes the spout 100 to erase, which no longer interferes with the rim 104 and then allows continued pivoting of the handle 18 towards the open and reset positions.
The device has the advantage of allowing implementation without significant modification of the production line, only the rod 24 being to be replaced or to be shaped in a different way. The size of the mechanism is not modified by the presence of the spout 100 housed inside the handle 18.
To the contact arm 14 is subject an elastic tongue 106 with a curved end in the form of a hook 108 capable of catching on a redant 110 provided on the trigger lever 28. The hooking tongue 106 prevents an untimely reclosing of the contacts, for example due to bouncing.
