Abstract

The gate valve has two tapered closure members (12) which are raised and lowered between two sloping seating surfaces by a screw operated spindle with a handwheel on top, in the conventional manner. Both are castings, with machined portion so that they will fit together. One member (17) has a projecting portion (19) with a domed top (28). This seats against a correspondingly curved recess (20) in the centre of the other member (18). Both are circular plates. The projecting portion (19) has a groove (22) machined all round, inside a raised ring (23) followed by a smaller locating groove (24) for a projecting ring on the other member. The spherical seating allows movement for alignment. One member has a recess with parallel sides which locate against a projection on the other member with two opposed flats machined on it to form a location against rotation between the two.
