On a déjà cherché à éliminer cet inconvénient.
la fig. 1 est une vue en coupe d'une forme d'exécution de la cellule selon l'invention;
la fig. 2 une vue analogue d'une autre forme d'exécution;
la fig. 3 un graphique montrant les courbes de décharge d'une cellule conventionnelle et d'une cellule selon l'invention;
A ... AgO + graphite (5% en poids);
The present invention relates to a silver oxide cell having a large capacity and more particularly to a bivalent silver oxide cell in which the high voltage which appears at the time of the start of the discharge is instantly lowered to a constant level. .
Cells have already been made using monovalent silver oxide (Ag2O) as the active body, but the discharge capacity of such a cell is not very strong and it is preferable to replace Ag2O with AgO.
However, as the cells using a divalent silver oxide are the seat of an Ag) Ag2O <Ag restoration process, two different voltage levels appear during the discharge (see curve b in fig. 3). At the start of the discharge the voltage level of AgO (1.8 V) appears, then this voltage is maintained a little, after which appears the voltage level of Ag2O (1.5 V) which continues to be maintained. At the end, the voltage level of the cell reaches the zero level of
Ag. As a result, the use of this cell is limited.
We have already tried to eliminate this drawback. Thus, in US Patents N0 3476610 and NO 3655450, an attempt was made to lower the initial potential to the level of Ag2O (1.5 V) by letting AgO be accommodated by Ag2O so as to make the constant level persist. of this compound for a long time. However, this type of cell is expensive due to manufacturing difficulties, losses in capacity and the amount of Ag2O.
The object of the invention is to provide a new divalent silver oxide cell which does not exhibit any voltage variation. Another object of the invention is to provide a divalent silver oxide cell in which a mass of amorphous carbon is added to the bivalent silver oxide as positive active material in order to achieve a substantially constant discharge voltage. Another object of the invention is to provide a silver oxide cell having a long life.
The potential of 1.8 V which appears at the start of the discharge is lowered to the level of 1.5 to 1.6 V immediately (after about 1 s) and then remains at a constant value for a long time.
When the load is off, the voltage is restored slowly enough that the cell can be used for various purposes, in particular for supplying an instrument using current pulses, such as a watch.
The aim set out above, as well as the important features of the invention will appear better on reading the following description and the claims, as well as on examining the appended drawing, including:
fig. 1 is a sectional view of an embodiment of the cell according to the invention;
fig. 2 a similar view of another embodiment;
fig. 3 a graph showing the discharge curves of a conventional cell and of a cell according to the invention;
fig. 4 a graph showing the V-I characteristics of a conventional cell and of a cell according to the invention, and
fig. 5 a graph showing the voltage drop and the restitution of the voltage in a cell according to the invention.
Referring to fig. 1, the cell comprises a cap 1, forming a cathode and a cap 2 forming an anode, with a package 3 disposed between the caps so as to seal the enclosure which they determine. In the anode cap 2 is placed an amalgamated negative active material 4 comprising 10% by weight of added mercury and zinc powder. The number 5 denotes an absorbent electrolyte layer and 6 a separating layer made of cellophane. These two layers constitute a partition wall.
The electrolyte is an aqueous solution of 30-40% by weight sodium hydroxide or 30-40% by weight potassium hydroxide with saturated zinc oxide. The number 3 designates a positive active material in which are physically mixed, in a homogeneous manner, a powder of divalent silver oxide and an amorphous carbon powder.
The amorphous carbon which is used is non-crystalline carbon such as charcoal, activated carbon, carbon black, coke, etc.
The optimum amount of amorphous carbon which is added to the bivalent silver oxide is less than 20% by weight, but greater than zero relative to the amount of bivalent silver oxide. The optimum proportion is obtained and confirmed by tests.
The electrolyte contains a halogenated compound, for example
NaBr, MgBr or an oxyhalogenated salt such as Na104, Lit104. Indeed, it is considered that the internal resistance of the cell decreases and that the chemical reactions of the cell are stabilized by a
action of the halide or the oxyhalogenated salt.
Fig. 2 shows another embodiment of the invention.
The same reference signs indicate identical elements.
In this embodiment, the arrangement of the positive active material is a little different. This material is divided into two parts.
An amorphous carbon layer 8 is disposed under the separation layer 6 and the powder of bivalent silver oxygen 9. The optimum amount of amorphous carbon is the same as in the first embodiment.
We will now explain the experiments testing the characteristics of cells according to the invention. In these experiments, an activated carbon by the name of Norit (brand name) or Shirasagi (brand name) which can be obtained in the market is chosen and the dimensions of the cell are set at 11.6 mm in diameter and 5.4 mm in height. In each experiment, the continuous discharge characteristic at constant resistance of
1.5 k ## is compared to that of a conventional cell.
Experiment 1:
Comparison of discharge capacities.
(Conventional cells):
1) AgO + graphite (5% by weight) 222 mAh
2) Ag2O + graphite (5% by weight) 170 mAh
(Cells according to the invention):
3) AgO + activated carbon
(Norit 0.5% by weight) 238 mAh
4) AgO + activated carbon
(Shirasagi 1.0% by weight) 237 mAh
Experiment 2:
In this case, a halogenated compound or an oxyhalogenated salt is added to the electrolyte.
1) 1) AgO + activated carbon (Shirasagi 1.0% by weight)
+ NaBr (5% by weight) 261 mAh
2) AgO + activated carbon (Shirasagi 1.0% by weight)
+ NaClO4 (5% by weight) 255 mAh
3) AgO + activated carbon (Shirasagi 1.0% by weight)
+ MgBr (10% by weight) 269 mAh
The discharge curves which are the result of experiments 1 and 2 are shown in fig. 3. Curve A shows experiment 1 (2); curve B shows experiment 1 (and curve C shows experiment 2 (1).
It can be seen from these figures that the duration of the discharge of the cell according to the invention (curve c) is approximately 1.5 times that of conventional Ag2O cells (curve A). In addition, the potential (1.8 V) of a conventional AgO cell, due to the AgO compound, appears from the start of the discharge (curve B) and is maintained for a very long time (approximately 30 h). On the one hand, according to the invention, the potential of AgO drops the potential of Ag2O (1.5 V) within a few minutes after the start of the discharge and then remains constant for a long time.
Experiment 3:
Fig. 4 shows the V-I (current voltage) characteristics of a conventional silver oxide cell and of a cell according to the invention. In this figure, curve A shows the first characteristic and curve B the second:
A ... AgO + graphite (5% by weight);
B ... AgO + activated carbon (Norit 2%).
Experiment 4:
Fig. 5 shows the voltage drop and restoration characteristic of the cell according to the invention. The open circuit voltage Eo of the cell is 1.85 V and when a load less than 1 0Kfl is connected to the cell (electric current greater than 0.2 mA), the voltage of the cell drops to 1, 5-1.6V in one second. When the load is removed, the voltage slowly rises. Then even if the cell is used taking intermittent current, like in a watch, there is no problem in the actual operation.
The construction of this cell is as follows: AgO + activated carbon (Shirasagi, 1%) + NaCIO4 (5%).
Experiment 5:
If the amount of activated carbon added to AgO is changed, the discharge capacity of the cell may change:
AgO + activated charcoal (Shirasagi G, 0.2%) 242 mAh
AgO + activated charcoal (Shirasagi G, 0.5%) 239 mAh
AgO + activated carbon (Shirasagi G, 1.0%) 237 mAh
AgO + activated carbon (Shirasagi G, 2.0%) 176 mAh
AgO + activated carbon (Shirasagi G, 3.0%) 154 mAh
It is understood that the preferable amount of activated charcoal is less than 2%, and more specifically in the range of 0.5 to 1.0%.
