Abstract
The removable cassette has a housing (16) for the ink ribbon (32), a lower wall section (18) and a cover wall (22) which are parallel to one another and separated by a U-shaped wall (24). An intermediary partition (26) forms a storage chamber (30) for the ribbon. An arm (20) extends sideways from the housing (16) and has a guide surface which is at right angles to the U-shaped wall and guides the ribbon to one side of the typewriter printing position and back again to the housing. The use of such a cassette with an endless ribbon avoids the use of two spools which often have to be operated manually and this is liable to be a dirty operation.
Description
The present invention relates to a removable ribbon cartridge for a typewriter.
This invention relates to typewriters, and more specifically to a device delivering an endless loop of printing ribbon which is stored in a cartridge in a first orientation and positioned for printing in a second orientation.
Endless loops of ribbon carried on independent structures, intended to be removably mounted on a typewriter and cooperating with a printing mechanism of the typewriter, are common.
For example, U.S. Patent No. 785709 describes a supporting structure for an endless loop of ribbon held in a first orientation on a ribbon supporting structure which can be removably mounted on a typewriter. The ribbon is then manually passed through. a ribbon support structure of a typewriter, over and under guide rollers so that the ribbon is then placed in a second orientation.
Manual manipulation of the tape to pass it over the tape guides from the supporting structure is a definite disadvantage which the present invention seeks to avoid.
In US Pat. No. 2,689,705 a motor driven ribbon mechanism is described which is carried outside the footprint of the typewriter having only an elongated ribbon passage extending laterally to the point of printing. Ribbon is delivered by a supply spool along a passage path guided in a first orientation then obliquely upward in a second orientation and then downward to a printing station in a third orientation. of ribbon ends in an encircling ring that requires removal of the platen to install the unit.
Consequently, an object of the present invention is to provide a removable cartridge for typewriter tape which obviates the aforementioned drawbacks by the fact that it comprises a housing for carrying the tape in a first orientation, means carried by this housing. to guide the ribbon from this housing on one side of the printing point of the typewriter to that printing point and then to guide this ribbon on a return path to this housing on the same side of the point printing of the typewriter and by the fact that it comprises means for modifying the ribbon from its first orientation inside the case up to a second orientation along the guide means to the point of printing then to put it back in this first orientation.
The accompanying drawing illustrates schematically and by way of example an embodiment of the ribbon cartridge for a typewriter according to the invention.

Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view of a ribbon cartridge showing all of its components.
Fig. 3 is a partial enlarged view of the mechanism of the supply reel illustrated in FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view from the rear of the tape cartridge illustrating the orientation of the tape as it returns to the storage chamber.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the ribbon cartridge as illustrated in FIG. 4.
Fig. 6 is a rear perspective view of the tape cartridge illustrating the orientation of the tape as it exits the storage chamber.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the ribbonless ribbon cartridge showing the relationship between the ribbon exit and entry slits relative to each other.
With reference now to the drawing and more particularly to FIG. 1. Illustrating a holder for a tape cartridge 10 pivotally mounted on the frame of a typewriter 12, the holder for the cartridge 10 has an open top face for receiving the cartridge 14. The tape cartridge 14 is installed in the support 10 and held in its operative or service position by a suitable latching device (not illustrated).
When installed, the ribbon cartridge 14 cooperates with the typewriter advance means (not shown).
With reference to FIG. 2, the tape cartridge 14 is formed by a housing 16 preferably of a light and strong material such as molded plastic and has a flat base 18 having a rigid arm 20 extending laterally but forming part of this housing as well as a cover 22 spaced from and parallel to the flat base 18. Attached to the ridges of the flat base 18 and the flat cover 22 is a U-shaped bottom wall member 24 and an intermediate wall 26 and a top wall 28, thus defining a storage chamber 30 for an endless ribbon 32. Intermediate wall 26 forms the upper limit of storage chamber 30 and has a tape exit slot 34 extending between the bases and oriented in alignment with tape 32 as tape 32 exits storage chamber 30.
Tape 32 is pulled out of storage chamber 30 by the action of a pair of drive rollers 36 and 38 which drive tape into chamber 30 at its opposite end.
When the tape 32 is pulled out of the storage chamber 30, it passes over a fixed hub 40, under a flexible member 42, and along a lower surface 44 of the upper wall 28. The flexible member 42 has a end 43 fixed to the upper wall 28 and another end 45 resting on the fixed hub 40.
The elastic action of the flexible member 42 exerts just sufficient pressure on the fixed hub 40 for the tape 32 to pass between two, the tape 32 is under sufficient tension to avoid any tension defect in the loops that may accumulate the along the tape path between tape exit slot 34 and drive rollers 36 and 38.
The base 18 (Fig. 4) has an elongated exit slot 46 in the direction of the arm 20 through which the tape 32 passes as it emerges from the interior of the housing 16 to the exterior of this housing. 16. One end 48 of the wall 28 bears against a partial wall 50. The partial wall 50 also acts as a support platform for the tape in the entry corridor 52.
When the tape 32 passes through the slot 46 (fig. 4),
The orientation of the tape is progressively changed from a first orientation designated by arrow 54, in plane alignment with walls 24 and 26, to a second orientation indicated by arrows 56, in plane alignment with arm 20.
This gradual modification is effected as the tape 32 is pulled through the slot 46. The tape 32 comes into sliding contact on a ridge 58 of the outlet slot 46 of a retaining means as it passes through it. ci towards the outside of the housing 16. It is in this position that the tape 32 is twisted from the first orientation to the second orientation. This progressive modification allows an easy transition of the tape 32 from the first orientation in the storage chamber 30 to its second orientation in the rigid arm 20.
The ribbon 32 is now oriented parallel to the rigid arm 20. The rigid arm 20 extends from the housing of the ribbon cartridge 16 in approximately plane alignment with the base 18 and has a printing opening 60 near its end. . When the cartridge 14 is placed on its support 10, the printing opening 60 of the arm of the cartridge 20 and the printing point 61 of the typewriter coincide.
Ribbon 32 passes through print opening 60 of rigid arm 20 and at this time ribbon 32 is aligned and exposed for printing.
Beyond the printing opening 60 is a free end 62 having the shape of a V to constitute a guide having two surfaces at approximately 45 64 and 66. Between these guide surfaces 64 and 66 is a member. 68 to prevent the ribbon 32 from rising when guided by the surface 64 and the surface 66; thus the direction of the tape is reversed and it is directed again along the same side of the arm 20 but back towards the housing 16.
The arm 20 includes an entry slot 70, through which the tape 32 passes as it enters the entry corridor 52. The entry slot 70 intersects the exit slot 46 thus allowing the tape 32 to exit the. cartridge housing 16 following a path substantially overhanging the ribbon entry path as ribbon 32 enters housing 16. Ribbon 32 (Fig. 2) is pulled through entry slot 70 through the corridor entry 52, under end wall 48, then between drive rollers 36 and 38. As tape 32 is pulled through entry slot 70, the orientation of tape 32 is gradually changed from the second orientation in plane alignment with the arm 20 to the first orientation in plane alignment with the walls 24 and 26.
As shown in fig. 7, this gradual modification is accomplished as the tape 32 contacts and follows the edge 72 of the entry slot 70. The tape 32 contacts the corner of the wall 72 and is pulled through the slot. entry 70 into the inlet corridor 52 of the cartridge 14 by the drive rollers 36 and 38. It is at this position that the tape 32 is gradually changed from its second orientation to its first orientation.
The drive rollers 36 and 38 (fig. 2) are carried rotatably about axes 35 and 37 at the entrance to the storage chamber 30. The axes 35 and 37 extend through the base 18 and through through the cover 22 parallel to each other and perpendicular to this base and to this cover 18 respectively 22.
The shaft 35 extends through the base 18 over a greater distance than the shaft 37. This additional length of the shaft makes it possible to constitute a support for a ratchet wheel 39, this wheel 39 being held between the shaft. end of roller 36 and retaining plate 41 (Fig. 4).
Referring now to FIG. 3, the intermediate wall 26 ends with integral fingers 27 and the lower wall 24 ends with integral fingers 25. The fingers 25 and 27 cooperate with a pair of grooves 29 and 31 of the drive rollers to prevent the tape 32 does not wrap around rollers 36 and 38. This tape winding is amplified when drive rollers 36 and 38 move tape 32 inside storage chamber 30 or tape 32 is stored freely in the chamber. storage chamber 30. The result of this free storage is that the outer convolution of the strip 32 tends to move towards the outer limit of the storage chamber 30 and finally towards the inlet and outlet openings thereof. .
In the embodiment illustrated particularly in FIG. 3, the drive rollers 36 and 38 have a toothed periphery. However, it has been shown that rollers with an uninterrupted periphery can also perform acceptably.
The tape 32 passes between the rollers 36 and 38, the teeth of these rollers 36 and 38 being sufficiently engaged to ensure a positive and uniform feed when the tape 32 passes between them. As a result, the teeth of the drive rollers bend the tape 32 passing between them as the tape 32 enters the storage chamber 30. The pleating of the tape 32 makes it more physically suitable to be stuffed into the storage chamber 30 and makes its cross section more stable to be maintained in its attitude inside the storage chamber 30.
When the ribbon cartridge is placed on the support 10 and the typewriter is started, the ratchet wheel 39 is engaged by the advance means (not shown) of the typewriter and the typewriter wheel. 'latch 39 is rotated by its cam. A spring 74 is mounted on the base 18 to come into contact and prevent any reverse rotation of the ratchet wheel 39. Thus the drive rollers 36 and 38 are rotated jerkily to pull the tape 32 from it. from the storage chamber through the printing passage and then pulls the ribbon back into the storage chamber 30.
