The present invention relates to a process which allows cyanide waste to be worked up into pure cyanides (in particular NaCN, KCN, Zn (CN) 2, CuCN, AgCN, AuCN).
Cyanide waste from hardening shops, electroplating plants and chemical industries is now mainly detoxified by oxidation reactions. The cyanide waste is not processed. The present process shows the possibility to recycle this highly toxic waste economically.
In the new process according to the invention, an aqueous solution that is as concentrated as possible is produced from the cyanide waste. Any carbonate present is precipitated by adding calcium chloride and filtered off. Then hydrogen cyanide gas is expediently expelled or distilled off in a rectification column (1) (see sketch) in a neutral to weakly acidic medium. The neutralization of hydrocyanic acid to the desired cyanides takes place, for. B. using the following methods:
1. The hydrogen cyanide gas is brought to 4500C by the heater (2) and reacted with soda in a fluidized bed reactor (3). Sodium cyanide is formed, which can be used further without further treatment. Several fluidized bed reactors are used in series to fully utilize the expelled hydrocyanic acid.
2. The hydrogen cyanide gas is introduced into an aqueous solution of a heavy metal salt (4). The cyanide which precipitates is separated out in the filter (5). The now strongly acidic mother liquor is used to acidify the cyanide solutions.
3. The hydrogen cyanide gas is introduced into a methanolic or ethanolic solution of an alkali hydroxide (6), the corresponding cyanide precipitating. The precipitate is separated out in the filter (7) while the mother liquor is dried (8) and concentrated with alkali metal hydroxide in the storage container (9).
The exhaust gases are generally freed from residual amounts of hydrogen cyanide using Java lye before they are discharged into a chimney (10).
The waste water from the plant can be freed of heavy metals and cyanide residues in a conventional way in a continuous detoxification plant (11).
Embodiments
1. A 14% solution of cyanide electroplating waste was acidified to pH 5 and introduced into a rectification column. The hydrocyanic acid distilling off was diluted with the air, heated to 450ob and reacted with powdered soda in a fluidized bed reactor. The yield of sodium cyanide was 32% of theory. By using soda with a large surface, which was obtained by carefully heating bicarbonate, the yield could be increased to 98%. (Yield based on sodium carbonate.)
2. Hydrocyanic acid gas was distilled off from a 14% cyanide solution in a rectification column and introduced into a saturated aqueous zinc chloride solution. The precipitated zinc cyanide was filtered off and dried.
The purity was over 98%; the implementation was quantitative.
3. A 14% solution of cyanide waste was introduced into a rectification column. The hydrocyanic acid distilling off was introduced into a 25% strength methanolic solution of potassium hydroxide. The potassium cyanide which precipitated out was filtered off and dried. The test showed a purity of over 98%.
