Man erhält 400-470 g rohes 3-Methyl-2-cyclopentenon.
Man erhält 110 g 2-Hydroxy-3-methyl-2-cyclopen- tenon vom Schmelzpunkt 103-104".

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-cyclopentenone, which is characterized in that acetonylacetone is added to a boiling aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution and the 3-methyl-2-cyclopentenone formed is distilled off azeotropically with water, if necessary separated from the distillate, epoxidized and the epoxide cleaved by means of aqueous acetone in the presence of a mineral acid, in particular perchloric acid, the known fragrance and aromatic substance 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-cyclopentenone being obtained.
Several processes for the preparation of 3-methyl-2-cyclopentenone are already known, including one in which acetonylacetone is cyclized with aqueous alkali (J. Chem. Soc. 1952, 1127). The known processes are, however, unsatisfactory, especially with regard to their yield. Attempts to improve the process known from the cited literature reference have so far been unsuccessful (Bull.
Soc. Chim. France 1963, 1286).
The process according to the invention gives far higher yields than the previously known processes and is also technically advantageous in that it can be carried out continuously.
The alkali hydroxide solution used is preferably 0.1 to 0.5 N sodium hydroxide solution. To achieve a high yield, it is also advantageous to maintain a ratio of acetonylacetone: aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution = 1:10 to 1:20. The 3-methyl-2-cyclopentenone can be separated from the distillate by extraction, for example with ethylene chloride.
The epoxidation is expediently carried out using an alkaline hydroperoxide solution. The cleavage of the epoxy group of the 2,3-epoxy-3-methylcyclopentanone thus obtained in aqueous acetone has the advantage over other methods of epoxy cleavage that the reaction mixture can be easily worked up and a pure product can be obtained, since the acetone (together with some water and any starting material present) can distill off, whereupon the 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-cyclopentenone easily crystallizes in the aqueous residue.
The following examples explain the process according to the invention. All temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
example
A solution of 32 g sodium hydroxide in 21 water is heated until the distillation begins. A solution of 661 g of acetonylacetone in 10 1 of water is then slowly added with simultaneous distillation of the reaction solution, the flow rate being adapted to the rate of distillation. The mean reaction time should be at least 80 minutes. After all of the acetonylacetone solution has been added, 3 liters of water are added in the same way. The distillation is continued until the volume of the reaction solution is about 500 ml. About 15 liters of distillate are obtained which, according to UV analysis, contain 21.7 g of 3-methyl-2-cyclopentene per liter. The distillate is mixed with 5 kg of sodium chloride and then with 21 ethylene chloride while stirring.
The organic layer is separated and the aqueous solution is extracted with 2 × 21 ethylene chloride. The organic extracts are combined and distilled under atmospheric pressure. 400-470 g of crude 3-methyl-2-cyclopentenone are obtained.
The 3-methyl-2-cyclopentenone obtained is admixed with 1100 ml of water, 12.5 g of disodium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, 0.36 g of sodium dihydrogen phosphate monohydrate and 550 ml of 35% strength hydrogen peroxide. The solution is cooled to 10 15 "and 145 ml of 6N sodium hydroxide solution are added with stirring, the temperature being kept between 15 and 300. The mixture is then stirred for a further hour at room temperature. The reaction mixture is then extracted with 500 ml of ethylene chloride. After separation the organic phase, the aqueous solution is extracted 4 times with 500 ml of ethylene chloride. The combined organic extracts are washed with 300 ml of water. The solvent is evaporated under reduced pressure and the oily residue is distilled. At 63-64 / 15 torr. 260 g of 2,3-epoxy-3-methylcyclopentanone.
260 g of the epoxy produced, 780 ml of acetone, 13 ml of 70% perchloric acid and 260 ml of water are heated with stirring. The acetone is slowly distilled off. When 520 ml of distillate have passed over, a solution of 6.05 g of sodium hydroxide in 100 ml of water is added. The distillation is then below 15 torr. continued. After all the acetone has been removed, a further 15 ml of water are distilled off. The residue is then allowed to cool and crystallize. Crystals are washed with 75 ml of ice water and dried at 400. 110 g of 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-cyclopentenone with a melting point of 103-104 "are obtained. After working up the mother liquors, a total yield of 216 g is obtained.
Recrystallization from water gives 175 g of a product with a melting point of 105-106.
