Die neuen Imidazolidin-3-thio-carbonsäure-Derivate der Formel I werden gemäss vorliegender Erfindung hergestellt, indem man Harnstoffe der Formel II R1-NHO-NH2 (11) mit Oxalylhalogeniden zu 2,4,5-Trioxo-imidazolidin-Derivaten der Formel III
EMI1.2

The new imidazolidine-3-thio-carboxylic acid derivatives of the formula I are prepared according to the present invention by converting ureas of the formula II R1-NHO-NH2 (11) with oxalyl halides to form 2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine derivatives of the formula III
EMI1.2
cyclized and then reacted with halothioformic acid S-esters of the formula IV XCOSR2 in the presence of acid-binding agents.
In formulas II to IV, R1 and R2 have the meanings given under formula I and X denotes halogen, preferably chlorine or bromine.
The reactions are preferably carried out in the presence of solvents or diluents which are inert towards the reactants and at reaction temperatures in the range from -100 to 110.
The following solvents or diluents which are inert towards the reactants can be used: aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons, such as benzene, toluene, xylenes, petroleum ether, chlorobenzene, methylene chloride, ethylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, ether, and ethereal solvents such as dialkioxane ethers ; preferably halogenated alkanes such as methylene chloride, ethylene chloride, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride.
Inorganic and organic bases serve as acid-binding agents for the process according to the invention. The reaction of a urea of the formula II with an oxalyl halide can take place in the presence of inorganic bases. An acid binding agent is required for the introduction of the COSR2 group. Tertiary amines and alkanolates can be used as organic bases, e.g. Trialkylamines, such as triethylamine, trimethylamine, pyridine and pyridine bases and the alkali metal alkanolates of lower alkanols, such as e.g. Sodium methylate, sodium ethylate, potassium ethylate, etc.
The imidazolidine-3-thio-carboxylic acid derivatives of the formula I in which the substituents represented by R1 and R2 have an amino group capable of forming addition salts can be converted into the corresponding addition salts by reaction with inorganic or organic acids in a manner known per se.
The following acids are suitable for the formation of addition salts: hydrohalic acids, such as hydrochloric and hydrobromic acid, also phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, fluoroboric acid (HBF4), perchloric acid, alkylsulfuric acids, such as methyl or ethylsulfuric acid, naphthoic acids, benzoic acid, halobenzoic acids, acetic acid, trichloroacetic acid , Aminoacetic acid, propionic acid, halopropionic acids, butyric acid, lactic acid, stearic acid, aliphatic dicarboxylic acids such as oxalic acid, tartaric acid, maleic acid, etc.
The following examples illustrate the process according to the invention. Further imidazolidine-3-thio-carboxylic acid derivatives of the formula I, which were prepared by the process described in the examples, can be found in the table below. The temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
Example I a) 88.1 g of N-ethylurea are suspended in one liter of tetrahydrofuran. At 10, 85.2 ml of oxalyl chloride are slowly added, the mixture is stirred for a further three hours at room temperature and then for three hours under reflux. The suspension is filtered hot, the filtrate is evaporated and the residue is recrystallized from isopropanol. 1-ethyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine is obtained, which melts at 124 "-126".
b) 71 g of 1-ethyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine are suspended in 500 ml of methylene chloride. While cooling, 70 ml of triacetylamine are added dropwise first at 15 and then 62.5 g of S-ethyl chlorothioformate at room temperature, the reaction temperature reaching up to the boiling range of the solvent. The reaction is completed by refluxing for 10 hours. After cooling to room temperature, it is extracted three times with 100 ml of water. The organic phase is dried over magnesium sulphate and evaporated, and the residue is recrystallized from isopropanol. The resulting 1-ethyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolin-3-thiocarboxylic acid S-ethyl ester melts at 123-124 with decomposition.
Example 2 a) 272.3 g of N-phenylurea are dissolved in 1.5 l of tetrahydrofuran. The solution is warmed to 50 and slowly mixed with 171 ml of oxalyl chloride, the reaction temperature should not exceed 650. The mixture is stirred for a further hour at room temperature and then under reflux for four hours. The reaction mixture is evaporated and the residue is recrystallized from isopropanol. 1-Phenyl-3,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine is obtained, which melts at 214-216 ".
b) 19 g of 1-phenyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine are suspended in 100 ml of chloroform. While cooling, 14 ml of triethylamine are first added dropwise at 15 and then 15.3 g of S-sec.butyl chlorothioformate at room temperature. The mixture is stirred under reflux for 8 hours. After cooling to room temperature, it is extracted three times by shaking with 30 ml of water. The organic phase is dried over magnesium sulphate and evaporated, and the residue is recrystallized from isopropanol. The 1-phenyl-2,4, S4rioxo-imidazolidine-34hiocarboxylic acid-S-sec-butyl ester obtained melts at 150-1520.

The active ingredients of the formula I and their salts influence the growth of above and below ground parts of plants in different ways, they are not phytotoxic in the usual concentrations and have a low toxicity to warm blooded animals. The active ingredients do not cause any morphological changes or damage that would cause the plant to die. The compounds are not mutagenic. Their effect is different from that of a herbicidal active ingredient and a fertilizer.
The new compounds influence the ability to germinate, vegetative plant growth and promote flower formation, fruit development, fruit ripening and the formation of separating tissue. E.g. in apples, pears, peaches, tomatoes, bananas and pineapples, the fruit ripening and coloring are accelerated and improved.
By promoting the formation of separating tissue, the fruit and leaf abscission is made much easier. This is of great economic importance for mechanical harvesting, e.g. of citrus fruits, cotton, etc.
The following experiment shows the extent to which it is easier to remove citrus fruits.
With citrus pineapple oranges, Valencia and / or pineapple / sour it was found that the removability of fruits after application of the active ingredients of the formula I is much easier. Various active ingredients were sprayed as solutions in concentrations of 0.2% -0.4% onto branches with good fruit hangings of pineapple oranges, Valencia oranges and / oda pineapple / sour. After 7 days the experiments were carried out according to the method described by W.C. Wilson and C.H. Hendershott developed method, see Proc. At the.

Test as a means of hating cut flowers
Roses of the variety Dr. Verhagen (import from Holland) were used as test flowers. They were placed in the corresponding test solutions and placed in the climatic chamber at constant temperature (approx. 250C) and at rel. Air humidity of approx. 80% kept. Her condition was assessed daily. The table shows how many days the
Flowers remained stable without losing the petals or until strong wave appearances occurred.
The active ingredients were not tested directly in the water, but in a basic solution, which itself extends the shelf life, it contains sugar, buffer (pH 3.4) and a
Fngicide (e.g. Irgasan>).
3 roses each were in a container and 3 containers each he received the same solution. The shelf life in water and in the basic solution without active ingredient are given as a comparison. The active ingredients were usually formulated as wettable powder at a concentration of 50 ppm.

The use of the imidazolidine-3-thio-carboxylic acid derivatives prepared according to the invention from plants showed an increase in tillering and branching with a simultaneous reduction in length growth in monocotyledons. In addition, the supporting tissue of the stems of the treated plants was strengthened. The formation of undesirable stinging instincts in various types of plants is greatly reduced. Furthermore, rubber trees are stimulated to produce a greater amount of latex outflow, an effect that is of great economic importance. As tests have shown, the rooting of seedlings and cuttings as well as the tuber formation in potatoes is promoted.
In addition, dormant rhizomes sprout at the same time, which is particularly important with various perennial weeds such as couch grass, johnson grass and cyperus, which can then be easily destroyed or contained with herbicides. The germinability of seeds such as Seed potatoes and legumes are encouraged when the active ingredients are used in lower concentrations and prevented when higher. Ornamental plants such as chrysanthemums, rhododentrons, carnations and roses are deflowered at high concentrations. Both the one and the other effect are of economic importance. With many ornamental and cultivated plants, it is possible to control the flowering date and number of flowers. This effect plays a particularly important role in pineapples.
If all the bushes bloom at the same time, the bushes can be harvested within a comparatively short time. Furthermore, one can observe a thinning of blossoms and fruits in fruit trees.
The extent and type of effect depend on a wide variety of factors, in particular on the application time in relation to the development stage of the plant and the application concentration. These fax gates are in turn different depending on the type of plant and the desired effect. For example, lawns will be treated throughout the growing season; Ornamental plants, in which, for example, the intensity and number of flowers are to be increased, before the flower arrangement forms; Plants whose fruits are used respectively. can be used immediately after flowering or at an appropriate distance before harvest.
The active ingredients can be applied in the form of solid or liquid compositions both to above-ground parts of plants and in the soil or on the soil. Application to the above-ground parts of the plant, for which solutions or aqueous dispersions are most suitable, is preferred. For the treatment of the growth substrate (the soil), besides solutions and dispersions, dusts, granulates and grit are also suitable.
