These cycloalkyl radicals can also be substituted by lower alkyl radicals, e.g. by methyl, methyl, n-propyl, isopropyl or n-butyl, tert-butyl, sec-butyl, isobutyl.
The new imidazolidine-3-carboxylic acid derivatives of the formula I are prepared according to the present invention by converting a urea of the formula II Rl-NH-CO-NH2 (11) with an oxalyl halide to a 2,4,5-troxo-imidazoli- din derivative of the formula III
EMI1.2
cyclized and this then with a haloformic acid ester of the formula IV
X-COOR2 (IV) reacts in the presence of an acid-binding agent. In formulas II to IV, R1 and R2 have the meanings given under formula I and X is chlorine or bromine.
The reactions can be carried out in the presence of solvents or diluents which are inert towards the reactants and at reaction temperatures in the range from 100 to 110.
The following solvents or diluents which are inert towards the reactants can be used: aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons, such as benzene, toluene, xylenes, petroleum ether, chlorobenzene, methylene chloride, ethylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, ether, and ethereal solvents such as dialkioxane ethers ; preferably halogenated alkanes such as methylene chloride, ethylene chloride, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride.
Inorganic and organic bases in particular serve as acid-binding agents for the process according to the invention. The reaction of a urea of the formula II with an oxalyl halide can take place in the presence of inorganic bases. An acid binding agent is required for the introduction of the COOR2 group. The inorganic basin includes the hydroxides, hydrogen carbonates and carbonates of alkali and alkaline earth metals, as well as the hydrides and amides of alkali metals in fringes. Tertiary amines and alkanolates can be used as organic bases, e.g. Trialkylamines, such as triethylamine, trimethylamine, pyridine and pyridine bases and the alkali metal alkanolates of lower alkanols, such as e.g.
Sodium methylate, sodium ethylate, potassium ethylate, etc.
Individual representatives of the 2,4,5-trioxoimidazolidine derivatives of the formula III obtained as intermediates are known.
The imidazolidine-3-carboxylic acid derivatives of the formula T, in which the substituents represented by R1 and R2 have an amino group capable of forming addition salts, can be converted into the corresponding addition salts by reaction with inorganic or organic acids in a well-known manner.
The following acids are suitable for the formation of addition salts: hydrohalic acids, such as hydrochloric and hydrobromic acid, also phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, fluoroboric acid (HBF4), perchloric acid, alkylsulfuric acids, such as methyl or ethylsulfuric acid, naphthoic acids, benzoic acid, acetic halo acids, acetic acid haloids, and acetic acids Trichloroacetic acid, aminoacetic acid, propionic acid, halopropionic acid, butyric acid, lactic acid, stearic acid, aliphatic dicarboxylic acids such as oxalic acid, tartaric acid, maleic acid, etc.
The following example illustrates the method according to the invention. Further imidazolidine-3-carboxylic acid derivatives of the formula I, which were prepared according to the process described in the example, and hitherto unknown 2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine derivatives of the formula III can be found in the tables below. The temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.

At 10, 85.2 ml of oxalyl chloride are slowly added, stirring is continued for three hours at room temperature and then for three hours under reflux. The suspension is filtered hot, the filtrate is evaporated and the residue is recrystallized from isopropanol. 1-ethyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine is obtained, which melts at 124-126.
b) 426 g of 1-ethyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine are suspended in 2.5 liters of methylene chloride. While cooling, it is first added dropwise at 15,419 ml of triethylamine and then at 5–10,390 ml of isobutyl chloroformate. Stirring is continued overnight at room temperature and then extracted three times with 500 ml of water. The organic phase is dried over magnesium sulphate and evaporated, and the residue is recrystallized from isopropanol. The 1 ethyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine-3-carboxylic acid isobutyl ester obtained melts at 92-92.5.

The active ingredients of the formula I and their salts influence the growth of above and below ground parts of plants in various ways,
they are not phytotoxic in the usual concentrations and have a low toxicity to warm blooded animals. The active ingredients do not cause any morphological changes or damage that would cause the plant to die. The compounds are not mutagenic. Their effect is different from that of a herbicidal active ingredient and a fertilizer.
The new compounds influence the ability to germinate, vegetative plant growth and promote flower formation, fruit development, fruit ripening and the formation of separating tissue. E.g. in apples, pears, peaches, tomatoes, bananas and pineapples, the fruit ripening and coloring are accelerated and improved.
By promoting the formation of separating tissue, the fruit and leaf abscission is made much easier. This is of great economic importance for the mechanical emote, e.g. of citrus fruits, cotton, etc.
The following experiment shows the extent to which the detachment of citrus fruit is facilitated.
With citrus fruits - pineapple oranges - it was found that the detachment of fruits after application of the active ingredients of formula I is much easier. Various active ingredients were sprayed onto branches with a good hanging of pineapple-oranges as solutions in concentrations of 0.2% -0.4%. After 7 days, the experiments were carried out using the method developed by W. C. Wilson and C. H. Hendershott, cf. Proc. At the. Soc. Hoard. Sc. 90, 123-129 (1967).
Here, the force required to remove a fruit is determined in kg: active ingredient concentrate
Force in kg 1-methyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine 0.2% 3,1-3-carboxylic acid n-butyl ester 0.4% * 1-methyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine - 0.2% 2,6-3-carboxylic acid isobutyl ester 0.4% * t-sthyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine - 0.2% * -3-carboxylic acid isobutyl ester 0.4% * 1 -Ethyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine- 0.4% 4,1-3-carboxylic acid-benzyl ester Control 0.2% 7.9 * The fruits hanging on the tree could be removed so easily that no measurement was possible could be done.
None of the fruits showed any damage to the fruit, nor were any leaves or green fruits peeled off.
The following compounds also made it much easier to detach the fruit in citrus fruits: 1-methyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester 1-methyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine-3-carboxylic acid- isopropyl ester 1-ethyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester 1-ethyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester 1-ethyl-2,4,5- trioxo-imidazolidine-3-carboxylic acid allyl ester 1-ethyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine-3-carboxylic acid isopropyl ester 1-ethyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine-3-carboxylic acid n-butyl ester 1 -Phenyl-2,4,5-trioxo-imidazolidine-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester.
In monocotyledons there was an increase in tillering and branching with a simultaneous decrease in length growth. In addition, the supporting tissue of the stems of the treated plants was strengthened. The formation of undesirable stinging instincts in various plant species is greatly reduced. Furthermore, rubber trees are stimulated to produce a greater amount of latex outflow, an effect that is of great economic importance. As tests have shown, the rooting of seedlings and cuttings as well as the tuber formation in potatoes is promoted.
In addition, dormant rhizomes sprout at the same time, which is particularly important with various perennial weeds such as couch grass, johnson grass and cyperus, which can then be easily destroyed or contained with herbicides.
The germinability of seeds such as Seed potatoes and legumes are encouraged when the active ingredients are used in lower concentrations and prevented when higher. Ornamental plants such as chrysanthemums, rhododendrons, carnations and roses are also defoliated at high concentrations. Both the one and the other effect are of economic importance. With many ornamental and cultivated plants, it is possible to control the flowering date and number of flowers. This effect plays a particularly important role in pineapples. If all the bushes bloom at the same time, the bushes can be harvested within a comparatively short time.
Furthermore, one can observe a thinning of blossoms and fruits in fruit trees.
The extent and type of effect depend on a wide variety of factors, in particular on the application time in relation to the development stage of the plant and the application concentration. However, these factors vary depending on the type of plant and the desired effect. For example, lawns will be treated during the entire growing season; Ornamental plants, in which, for example, the intensity and number of flowers should be increased, before the flower system forms; Plants whose fruits are used respectively. can be used immediately after flowering or at an appropriate distance before the emote.
The active ingredients are applied in the form of solid or liquid compositions both to above-ground parts of plants and in the soil or on the ground. Application to the above-ground parts of the plant, for which solutions or aqueous dispersions are most suitable, is preferred. For the treatment of the growth substrate (the soil), besides solutions and dispersions, dusts, granulates and grit are also suitable.
