The invention relates to a car tire, the tread of which is provided with spikes.
Car tires with spikes have a better grip on icy roads and result in a shorter braking distance.
However, it is disadvantageous that their grip is poorer on roads that are free of snow and, in addition, there is greatly increased wear and tear and damage to the road surface.
The aim of the invention is to ensure that on roads free of snow and ice the car tires can be driven like studless tires, whereas on icy roads, spikes come into effect on these same car tires.
The invention with which this is made possible is characterized in that the tire contains at least one inflatable, ring-shaped air chamber in the area of its tread, whereby the spikes can be activated or deactivated by inflating this chamber or releasing the pressure.
By changing the air pressure in at least one air chamber of the tire, the spikes can be brought into or out of use as desired.
An exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is shown in the drawing. Show it:
1 shows a cross section through a car tire in which the air chamber is inflated,
Figure 2 is a cross-section through a car tire with an air chamber in the deflated state.
A car tire according to FIGS. 1 and 2 of the usual type is provided with a tread 1 and with side walls 2.
In the interior 5 of the tire there is an inflatable rubber tube in the usual way. Spikes 4 are used on the two edge parts of the tire tread. The middle part of the tire is divided so that an air chamber 6 is formed into which air can be pumped via a hose 7 with a check valve. The tire side 3 arches slightly inwards, while the outer tire side, that is to say the tread, arches outwards at the same time and thus protrudes beyond the spikes 4. The air chamber 6 has an approximately lenticular shape in cross section and extends annularly along the entire circumference of the tire. This state of the air chamber 6 is evident from FIG. 1. The tire is used with the air chamber 6 inflated when the spikes 4 are not to be used, that is to say when, for example, the streets are not icy.
If, on the other hand, the spikes 4 are to take effect, the air in the chamber 6 is released so that the pressure collapses and the air chamber afterwards only forms a relatively narrow slot, as can be seen from FIG. In this state, the spikes 4 can come into effect on the surface of the roadway and thereby develop the desired effect.
Tires of this type can be designed both as tires with a separate tube and as tubeless tires.
It is also possible, instead of the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, to make a modification in the sense that instead of a single central chamber, two lateral chambers are provided, which then bring the spikes into effect in the inflated state, while in the non-inflated state Stand behind the middle tread part.
A further variant would consist in that the middle part of the tread is provided with spikes and the tire formation is made in such a way that, when the chamber is not inflated, the middle part is set back from the spikeless edge parts, i.e. H. is slightly bent inwards and the spikes only come into effect when the air chamber in the middle of the tire is inflated.
