I'égouttage.
The subject of the present invention is a process for the particle size separation of a granular product in suspension in a liquid as well as an apparatus for carrying out this process.
The granular product may be ground or naturally granular, powdery or clayey, suspended in water or other liquid.
The devices already known in particle size separation generally have limits of use which are situated either at the level of the separation dimension, or at that of the precision and efficiency of the separation, or at that of the flow rate which decreases at the same time as the cut-off dimension.
This is how industrial screens, flat screens, curved screens, generally treat coarse feeds, greater than 100 microns.
Other devices can provide separations with finer dimensions, such as hydroclassifiers or hydrocyclones, but in addition to the supply must be conditioned by one or more preliminary calibration operations intended to remove the larger fractions, the cut ultimately obtained is not precise and a sometimes large proportion of the finer fraction is entrained with the upper fraction.
Thus, in industry, due to the large flow rates required, it was only possible to operate on cloths with relatively large mesh of the order of 0.1 mm and generally above, and by using a dynamic screening process. : by vibrations, jolts, oscillations, rotation, thus requiring expensive and bulky equipment.
Conversely, fine mesh fabrics are used at the labora
roof, without using a dynamic process, for the treatment
very small amounts of material. This static process of filtering
tion may not be suitable for industry because we are indeed limited not
only by the time but again by the lack of resistance
fine mesh fabrics and their premature wear. That can not
resist only low loads, the sieves can only be
small dimensions: 20 cm in diameter for example, which excludes
any industrial application, the quantities of products to be treated
in industry can be of the order of 100 mj per hour.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that it com
takes the flow distribution of the granulated material slurry
them in a liquid in the form of a film, the flow distribution
across the entire width of the top end of an inclined canvas
and flexible to effect separation of the granular material from the
liquid and maintaining a substantially uniform inclination of
the canvas during the sieving phase by supporting the canvas on
its entire extent by a support comprising di
Dimensions greater than those of the mesh of the canvas.
Thus, while using a very fine mesh sieve
thin, it becomes possible to increase its dimensions and to deviate
ser large quantities of products. In addition, the experience
shows that by tilting the sieve cloth, it is possible to achieve a
very high precision granulometric cut-off, the
partition approaching a broken line at right angles correspon
Consequently to a perfect cut at the chosen stitch,
while the plot of the partition curve of a hydroclassifier
classic has a more or less elongated curved shape, horn
corresponding to a significant percentage of non-thread material
trée and dimension less than the mesh considered.
The apparatus according to the invention for carrying out the method
defined above is characterized in that it comprises a frame in
stationary cline, a flexible screen fabric supported by a
support with which this frame is provided, this support extending above
under the canvas over its entire extent in order to keep it pra
evenly inclined, a feeding means located
at the top of the frame to distribute the liquid and
granular product suspended on the upper end of the
sieving cloth. means located below the canvas for
receive the sieved liquid and means located at the lower end
of the canvas to receive the products separated by the canvas.
The main advantage of this structure is that of increasing the efficiency of the apparatus, the pulp circulating over the entire surface of the sieve. In addition, since the sieve cloth can be moved, it is no longer necessary, as in the previous sieves, to have to completely change a worn cloth in a given location, which would have entailed prohibitive losses of time. It suffices, for example, even during operation, to move the fabric by winding it on an upper reel so that only the part located in the area where the filtration is the most intense and therefore where the fabric wears out the most. quickly is eliminated at will, quickly, without interrupting operations, and under particularly economical conditions.
This arrangement is especially advantageous when it comes to thickening or separating to the desired particle size a large amount of pulp in a minimum time.
Embodiments of the apparatus for carrying out the method which is the subject of the invention will be described, by way of examples, with reference to the drawing in which:

fig. 14, the schematic view of the device in plan.
Fig. I represents the section A-A of a known apparatus seen in plan in FIG. 2. In these figures. the sifting fabric 1 has been shown simply stretched in the inclined frame 2 of the apparatus.
The pulp to be treated arrives through a feed chute 3 and falls over the entire width of the upper part of the fabric. The liquid loaded with particles of dimensions smaller than the opening of the mesh of the canvas passes through this and is recovered by the chute 4, while the sieving residue slides on the canvas and is recovered by the chute 5.
The slope of the sieving cloth is chosen according to the precision of cut to the desired mesh, the characteristics of the pulp, in particular the shape of the grains: angular like quartz for example, round like garnets or flat like micas, and the desired flow. The device for tilting the frame where the device can be any has not been shown.
Although such a device already gives remarkable results with certain types of pulps, its performance is improved by placing the fabric 1 on a support spring formed by a grid with bars 6, FIG. 3.
The points of contact between bars and canvas ensure a certain relief, creating light and multiple waves favorable to
Draining. In addition, the creation of a central zone where the pulp digs a pocket in the fabric is avoided, so that ultimately a better performance of the device is obtained, the pulp no longer having a tendency to accumulate in the fabric. the central area. The better distribution of the pulp on the surface of the fabric further increases the flow rate of the materials to be treated.
Alternatively, it is also possible to rest the sieve cloth 1, fig. 4, on a simple wire mesh 7 with a mesh opening greater than that of the mesh 1 and stretched over the frame 2. By way of example, the wire mesh may have a mesh opening of 1 mm. For the understanding of the drawing, the canvas 1 has been shown above the grid 7 but in fact the canvas rests entirely on the grid.
Experience shows that the efficiency of the apparatus is further improved by placing the sieve cloth 1 directly on an elastic and porous layer 8, FIG. 5. This layer can be supported by a grid such as 6 and preferably by a wire mesh such as 7, so as to achieve close contact between the mattress 8 and the canvas 1.
In fact, in addition to the damping role played by the mattress 8, the close contact that it makes with the fabric makes it possible to overcome the capillary effects of the fabric which, depending on the viscosity of the pulp, would tend to refuse part of the fabric. pulp and therefore to create preferential passages of the pulp on the canvas.
In the event that the flow rates become greater, an additional layer 9 is added above the fabric and at its upper part, as shown in FIG. 6, of an elastic and porous material. This layer avoids the direct impact of the flow of pulp on the canvas which can therefore work normally in this location.
When the flow rates become even greater, it has been observed that the presence of a grid 10, fig. 7, arranged directly on the sieving fabric 1, and possibly on the layer 9 and on the fabric 1, played the role of both a means of protecting the fabric and a regulator of the flow of the pulp which, by spreading over the entire surface of the canvas, further increased the efficiency of the apparatus.
In the event that the pulp contains large particles, a grid with mesh or bars 11, fig. 8, intended for pre-screening. Unlike the other elements which are in contact with the fabric 1, the grid 11 is placed at a certain distance above the fabric, thus playing both a role of pre-screening and a protective role.
However, even adopting the arrangement of FIG. 8, there is non-uniform wear of the screen fabric due to the notable differences in the amounts filtered throughout the surface. In particular, the area adjacent to the feed chute 3, fig. 1, being an area where filtration is the most important, this part of the fabric tends to wear out or become clogged prematurely. Also, instead of changing the sieve cloth, which leads to considerable loss of time, we have a roller
of canvas 13, fig. 9, placed downstream of the frame, which is unwound in
rolling the part of the fabric located between the layer 8 and the grid 10 on the roller 12 placed upstream. As needed, rollers 12
and 13 can be automatically driven in a con
tinue or not.
The canvas not worn but only clogged can
then be renovated. This provision is of particular interest
health when the flows become important and a large
cut-off precision is required.
When this is the case, the flow of pulp is made to arrive on a
trigger box shown schematically at 14, fig. 10 and 11.
The flow, generally tubular, is caused to circulate through a
series of baffles such as 15 and enters at the outlet of the expansion box in the sealed frame 16 by a channel of very al section
lengthened thus distributing the flow of pulp over the entire width of the frame.
dre.
Inside the frame, there is a series of ar clarinets.
rosage 17, above the canvas 1. They are supplied either with compressed air or with water, or with reagent or with a solution to be treated. Depending on the case, they help to perfect the washing or to increase the flow rate of the apparatus or to force the evacuation of the refusals or to promote unclogging, these various actions being able to be combined according to the specific cases.
The realization of such a device has made it possible to treat a large number of products and in particular clay products containing, in addition to clay, large particles of quartz, flint and other coarse impurities of dimensions ranging from 0 to 10 mm, at a concentration which, by way of example, has been set between 50 and 250 g / l.
A single pass of such a product on the apparatus described above and lined, as the case may be, with a fabric of 81 microns, 104 microns or 124 microns, made it possible to make cuts leading to the quasi-quantitative recovery of clay and its separation from coarse fractions above the opening of the sieve. The plot of the partition curve approaches a broken line at a right angle, which demonstrates the advantage of the process over conventional hydroclassifiers for which the trimming curve takes a more or less inclined curved shape.
It is important to note that, the separation taking place as soon as the device is powered on, it can be used both for continuous industrial operations and for prospecting or discontinuous development campaigns.
The frame supporting the sieve system can be bent or receive a particular shape in obtuse angle or in a convex or concave curve or in parallel planes of several stages favoring the flow of the pulp in cascade. Thus some accessories such as the trigger box may be of different shape or design, while maintaining the purpose described. Likewise, the nature of the materials forming the frame of the screen, as well as the various metal parts of the apparatus can be adapted to different conditions of use, by the use, for example, of alloys resistant to corrosion of the screen. seawater if the prospecting is carried out at sea, or of light metal in the case of use in ambulatory missions where the mass to be transported must be as small as possible and be transported on the back of man or airborne.
In the variant shown in fig. 13 and 14, there is a feed device 14 which may include a die box
tries the flow of pulp in order to obtain a homogeneous flow of the products to be separated on the sieving fabric 1.
This rests, in the example chosen, on a wire mesh
stainless steel 7. This canvas is itself placed on the trays.

these fixing means, known per se, have not been shown

In the example shown, the pulp falls directly on the

canvas can be done in both directions. This arrangement is interesting since there is sufficient space on either side of the device.
It is interesting to note that, in the embodiment of the devices according to that of FIG. 9 where the rolls are arranged downstream and upstream of the apparatus, it may be advantageous to unwind the fabric from the upstream roll. One advantage of this arrangement is that the part of the fabric upstream, not yet used, is more easily shielded from soiling and infiltration from the pulp and from the rejects.
For the sake of clarity of the drawing, fig. 13 and 14 than the sieve cloth 1, a wire mesh 7 and the crosspieces 6.
Experience has shown that it is possible to replace the wire mesh 7 with a porous elastic mat, the pores or cells of which have dimensions greater than those of the meshes of the sieving cloth and that this porous elastic cloth or mat could be arranged below the crosspieces 6. In addition, the elastic mattress can be placed below the wire mesh 7, this assembly being arranged either below the sieving fabric or below the sleepers 6, the inflections of the sieving fabric above the sleepers, further contributing to reducing the loss of fine products caused by rejects. Experience has likewise shown that it is possible to place the wire mesh 7 above the sleepers 6 and to place the porous elastic mat below the sleepers.
Finally, the elastic mattress can be supported by the wire mesh, this assembly being placed above or below the sleepers.
It is clear that the various details described above can be applied equally well to the case where the sieving fabric is not constituted by the portion of a coupon located between two rollers and to devices whose fabric comes from two mounted rollers. upstream and downstream in relation to the flow of products.
