L'appareil suivant l'invention comprend
b) un dispositif chauffant avec des moyens de régulation de la température et une zone d'enserrement des fibres. à travers laquelle ledit ruban ou brin fibreux est amené à passer en vue de rendre le polymère plastique;
c) à la suite dudit organe chauffant, un dispositif générateur d'un couple pour tordre ledit ruban ou brin dans la zone d'enserrement pendant que le polymère est à l'état plastique;
une boudineuse et une filière d'extrusion à partir de laquelle un rideau de brins ou bande de polymère thermoplastique ayant une configuration désirée peuvent être extrudés;
une paire de rouleaux unificateurs rainurés circonférentiellement, en dessous de ladite filière d'extrusion, ces rouleaux étant placés côte à côte et de façon que les parties mâles ou saillies de la surface rainurée d'un rouleau entrent et pressent dans des parties femelles ou rainures de l'autre rouleau; les parties mâles ou saillies de la surface rainurée d'un rouleau entrent et pressent dans des parties femelles ou rainures de l'autre rouleau;
les extrudats de polymère étant dirigés dans l'étranglement de ces rouleaux de façon qu'au moins un brin ou bande d'extrudat pénètre dans chaque rainure unificatrice;
des moyens pour presser les rouleaux l'un contre l'autre;
des moyens pour faire tourner les rouleaux l'un vers l'autre à une vitesse supérieure à la vitesse d'extrusion du rideau de polymère;
des moyens pour refroidir les rouleaux ou la matière passant entre ceux-ci;
;
ainsi, le produit sortant de ces rouleaux, qui constituent le premier point de pincement fixe, consiste en brins ou rubans fibreux, composés de fibres discontinues et de polymère thermoplastique unifiés et partiellement orientés;
ensuite, après les rouleaux unificateurs, se trouve un dispositif chauffant, de préférence rainuré en V, comportant autant de rainures de section transversale en V se resserrant progressivement, qu'il y a de brins ou rubans composés sortant des rouleaux unificateurs afin que chaque brin ou ruban puisse pénétrer dans une rainure du dispositif chauffant;
les rainures en V se resserrant de préférence progressivement vers l'extrémité de sortie afin de produire un tassement supplémentaire et une coopération améliorée entre les fibres discontinues et le polymère, et pour assurer le réarrangement hélicoïdal des bouts lâches des fibres discontinues pendant la torsion;
des moyens pour ajuster et régler la température du dispositif chauffant;
plusieurs dispositifs conférant un couple, par exemple du type à fausse torsion, à la suite du dispositif chauffant, un pour chaque brin ou ruban, conférant à ce dernier une torsion prédéterminée à l'intérieur des rainures du dispositif chauffant;
des moyens pour refroidir les brins ou rubans composés tordus. disposés entre le dispositif chauffant et les dispositifs conférant un couple;
;

tesses pouvant atteindre 500000 t/min.
The present invention relates to a new apparatus for the continuous production of yarns composed of staple fibers and thermoplastic polymer.
Since the beginnings of spinning, this technique has been regulated by a fundamental, recognized and undisputed principle, according to which, whatever the manner of imparting and maintaining twist in a strand comprising staple fibers, one end of the strand must be free. to turn.
Indeed, if one tries to impart a twist to a continuous strand of fiber which is held at both ends, a right twist appears on the strand on one side of the twisting device and is compensated by a left twist of the other side of the device. The net result is zero twist yarn, as the left and right twists cancel each other out. This is known as a false twist.
Therefore. all known spinning methods fall into three basic groups
1) rotation of the wire take-up spool
2) rotation of the fiber supply spool
3) rotation of the end of the yarn to which loose staple fibers are continuously supplied.
Ring spinning. currently the most widely used, belongs to the first category, which also includes fin spinning. bucket and pot.
The second method, which is not very economical, finds little practical application in spinning.
The third method, called in English Open End Spinning or Break Spinning. is relatively new, although it has been in the developmental stage for many decades. It is currently being tested in a few textile workshops.
Its main technological drawback is the complexity of the devices required to produce the necessary discontinuity of fibers while keeping one end open by centrifugal forces for reassembly into a continuous twisted yarn with retained twist. The twisted yarn obtained can, however, be wound up linearly on a collecting roll. this is the main advantage of Open End Spinning as it can approximately double the production speed, compared to ring spinning. The maximum speed of the turbine currently achievable is about 30,000 rpm and the number of threads ranges from 20 to 60. Linear production speeds of 30 to 60 m min have been achieved with this process.
Holders have now found a new way to produce yarn. based on a technologically new principle and applicable to any material composed of staple fibers and thermoplastic polymer. whereby, unlike the basic concept mentioned above, a twist is imparted and retained in the wire between two fixed pinch points. such as linear feed rollers and linear take-up rollers.
The present invention allows a strand or ribbon composed of staple fibers and thermoplastic polymer to be imparted to a predetermined twist and to retain a substantial portion of that twist without the need to rotate the feed end or the take-up spool and without requiring to create a discontinuity in the mass of fibers at the feed end, as is the case in all Open End methods
Spinning: it also allows production speeds significantly higher than those of currently known methods.
The apparatus according to the invention comprises
a) feed rollers for supplying linearly a ribbon or a continuous strand of fibrous material composed of staple fibers secured with a thermoplastic polymer
b) a heating device with means for regulating the temperature and a zone for gripping the fibers. through which said ribbon or fibrous strand is passed to make the polymer plastic;
c) following said heating member, a device generating a torque for twisting said tape or strand in the gripping zone while the polymer is in the plastic state;
d) a collecting roller for linear winding of the yarn obtained; and optionally means for cooling said ribbon or strand in the twisted state, arranged between the heating member and the device imparting the torque.
In the above apparatus, the feed rollers for linearly feeding the continuous compound tape or strand and the collecting roll for linear winding of the resulting yarn constitute two fixed pinch points between which the twisting operation is performed. .
The device preferably also has various additional characters as is apparent from the following description:
From a practical point of view, it is far better to plan.
in combination with the basic apparatus, the additional operations and means required, respectively, for the formation of the desired continuous ribbon or strand, or rather of several such ribbons or strands, since it would not be economical to work with only one ribbon or strand at a time. This is ordinarily accomplished by extruding several parallel strands of thermoplastic resin from an extrusion die. and stratification. as well as unification thereof with suitable ribbons of staple fibers arranged in a disorderly or parallel fashion. The extruded thermoplastic strands can also be stretched to achieve an initial degree of molecular orientation of the polymer.
The heating of the composite ribbons or fibrous strands to a point making the polymer support plastic but without reaching the melting point of the polymer can be carried out by passing said ribbons or composite strands through a heating member provided with longitudinal grooves having a general shape. by V.
The composite fibrous ribbons or strands are gradually heated as they pass through these grooves to the point where their polymeric backing acquires the desired plasticity. The V-shaped grooves can also gradually tighten towards the outlet end of the heater so that the ribbons or compound strands passing through them are simultaneously compressed, resulting in better interaction and unification between the polymer and the fibers. discontinuous, and ensures the helical rearrangement of loose fibers during the twisting operation.
The heater is also provided with suitable means for regulating the temperature. because it is essential to adjust the temperature to the point where the polymer support achieves the desired degree of plasticity, however without reaching the melting temperature of the polymer.
This plasticity point varies from one polymer to another, but it can easily be determined by a person skilled in the art. In addition, the melting points of most thermoplastic polymers can be easily found in the literature. Obviously. the reason why the polymer must have a certain degree of plasticity is that there must be a slip between the polymer molecules and a slip between the staple fibers embedded in the polymeric backing when torque is applied to the fibrous compound tapes, thus allowing the helical rearrangement and the cohesion of the staple fibers. the polymer in the plastic state essentially playing the role of a binder and a lubricant.
On the other hand. the reason the polymer should not exceed its melting point is that. That much. the tape or strand loses its continuity (since the polymer becomes liquid) and also that the material becomes very sticky and adheres to the surface of the heating member. which prevents the correct course of the operation and to achieve the desired result.
The torque is applied to the ribbon or fibrous strand composed below the heating zone mentioned above. and the twist thus created rises to the point of greatest plasticity of the polymer. where it is fixed by fusion. which prevents the formation of a counter-torque which would tend to cancel out the torsion imparted. She can. for example, be imparted by means of any false torsion positive device, capable of rotating at speeds up to 500,000 rpm.
It will also be noted that, although the polymer support can reach a temperature very close to its melting point during the operation described above, it does not lose the molecular orientation that it acquired previously, because it is not maintained. at this temperature only for a very short time of the order of one second, which is however sufficient to impart the desired twist. With these short residence times, there is no risk of the polymer losing its orientation and, on the contrary, this orientation can be further increased by driving the rollers which constitute the second pinch point at a speed greater than that. rollers constituting the first pinch point. The molecular orientation of the polymer is also increased by the torque conferring the torsion, thanks to the circular stretching action of the polymer which is the consequence thereof.
The new apparatus of the present invention can therefore comprise, in a preferred embodiment, the following combination:
an extrusion machine and die from which a curtain of strands or web of thermoplastic polymer having a desired configuration can be extruded;
a pair of circumferentially grooved unifying rollers, below said extrusion die, these rolls being placed side by side and so that the male parts or protrusions of the grooved surface of a roller enter and press into female parts or grooves on the other roll; male parts or protrusions of the grooved surface of one roller enter and press into female parts or grooves of the other roller;
the polymer extrudates being directed into the throat of these rollers so that at least one strand or strip of extrudate penetrates into each unifying groove;
means for simultaneously advancing, from at least one side of the polymer curtain and into the constriction of said rollers, several strips of staple fibers, one in each unifying groove of the rolls
means for pressing the rollers against each other;
means for rotating the rollers towards each other at a speed greater than the speed of extrusion of the polymer curtain;
means for cooling the rolls or the material passing between them;
;
thus, the product emerging from these rolls, which constitute the first fixed nip point, consists of fibrous strands or ribbons, composed of unified and partially oriented staple fibers and thermoplastic polymer;
then, after the unifying rollers, there is a heating device, preferably V-grooved, having as many grooves of V-shaped cross section gradually tightening, as there are strands or compound ribbons coming out of the unifying rollers so that each strand or tape can enter a groove of the heater;
the V-grooves preferably gradually tightening towards the exit end in order to provide additional packing and improved cooperation between the staple fibers and the polymer, and to ensure the helical rearrangement of the loose ends of the staple fibers during twisting;
means for adjusting and regulating the temperature of the heating device;
a plurality of torque-imparting devices, for example of the false-twist type, following the heating device, one for each strand or ribbon, imparting to the latter a predetermined twist within the grooves of the heating device;
means for cooling the twisted compound strands or ribbons. disposed between the heating device and the torque imparting devices;
;
a pair of take-up rollers following the torque-conveying devices, constituting the second fixed pinch point and adapted to linearly collect and maintain under tension the final twisted yarns exiting from the twisting devices; and
one or more collecting rollers following these receiving rollers for linearly winding the twisted yarn obtained.
The present invention is explained in more detail in the following description of embodiments, given with reference to the accompanying drawing in which

Fig. 6 is a view, partially in section, taken along line B-B of FIG. 5.
The fundamental principle of the invention is illustrated in FIG. 1.
A fibrous tape 10, composed of staple fibers and a thermoplastic polymer, is fed into the pinch point of a pair of rollers 11, 12, which constitute the first fixed point. Then, the tape 10 is driven linearly by these rollers 11, 12 into the grooved heating member 13, with heating means 14 which operate so as to allow appropriate regulation of the temperature in the heating member 13. It will be noted that that the shape of the heater is preferred and in no way limiting and that any heater with proper temperature control and with an appropriate area of fiber constriction can be used.
However, in all cases, the heating member must allow the temperature and friction conditions of the fibers to be achieved making the thermoplastic polymer support of the compound tape 10 sufficiently plastic to allow intermolecular sliding of the polymer and sliding between the fibers, for example. consequently, the twisting of the staple fibers bonded to the polymeric support in a substantially helical arrangement.
This twist is imparted from below by the twist member 16, preferably of the false twist type, which is placed below the heater 13 and at such a distance from the outlet 15 of said heater that the wire twisted in. the heater 13 cools and coagulates in this twisted state. It should also be mentioned that the cooling and coagulation of the wire in twisted form may result simply from its passage through atmospheric air after it exits the heater. However, suitable cooling means can also be included, for example a water-cooled sleeve and a compressed air cooling zone.
During the twisting operation, the twist therefore rises from the twist 16 to the heater 13, in which it is fixed by fusion in the continuous compound tape having its polymeric support in the plastic state.
After passing through the twist 16, the yarn is picked up by a pair of pressure rollers 17, 18 which constitute the second fixed point, after which it is wound linearly on a collecting roller 19 to form the final spool of yarn 20. It is possible to completely eliminate the rollers 17, 18. because the collecting roller 19 can itself constitute the second fixed point. However, said rollers 17, 18 are preferred for keeping the yarn under the proper tension.
Fig. 2 shows an arrangement for the direct production of a compound tape 10 which can be used in combination with that of FIG. 1. With this arrangement, the tape 10 can be produced by direct extrusion of a thermoplastic polymer strand or extrudate 23 from a die 22 of an extruder 21, and by lamination and unification with a web of staple fibers 24. between rollers 11a and 12a. The strip of discontinuous fibers 24 can be fed on one or both sides of the extrudate 23 towards the nip point of the laminating and unifying rolls 11a, 12a, simultaneously with the extrudate. 23 which is still in a tacky state after its extrusion from the
sector 22.
The tape is then laminated and unified with said extrudate by pressure and cooling, that is to say by the action of rollers 11a, 12a which can be cooled internally by water or air. The used staple fiber tapes can be produced easily by means of a draw frame 25, such as used for drawing strands, or by means of well known aerodynamic devices.
In the present case, the rollers II a and 1 2a have the same function as the rollers II, 12 of FIG. 1. namely to supply the compound tape 10 to the heater 13. Thus, in the combination comprising the arrangement of FIG. 2 together with that of FIG. 1, the rollers 11. 12 of FIG. 1 would be replaced by the rollers l la. l2a of FIG. 2.
Furthermore, it would be economically unfavorable to carry out the present invention with a single compound strip 10. Thus, the rollers 11a. 12a preferably have the shape shown in FIG. 3. In the case illustrated by FIG. 3, six ribbons can be processed at a time. This obviously requires the extrusion of a curtain of six strands 23 from the die 22 and their simultaneous lamination and unification in the grooves 27 with six bands 24 to form six compound tapes at a time.
The shape of the rollers illustrated in fig. 3 is particularly effective, as it directly produces the required compound ribbons thanks to the pressure exerted by the protruding parts 28 of the rollers 12a in the circular grooves 27 of the rollers 11a, and the material which may possibly overflow or slip into the pointed grooves. 29 of roll 12a is cut by the cutting edges of protrusions 26 of roll 11a, or is kept separate from its adjacent stream of material by protrusions 26 of roll 11a.
However, this particular shape is in no way limiting and any rollers or drums performing the same function are acceptable (eg all circular grooves of the unifying rollers may be of square cross section). Further, the number of grooves in which the compound tapes are produced is not limiting.
When using a pair of rollers 11a, 12a, as shown in FIG. 3. the heater 13 must be modified so as to include the number of V-shaped grooves corresponding to the number of compound ribbons supplied by said rollers, six in this particular example. In addition, six twist devices 16 are required. one for each ribbon. Six take-up rolls 19 can also be used to form six spools 20 of yarn.
Furthermore. the unifying rolls 11a, 12a can be driven at a significantly higher speed (eg ten times higher) than the extrusion speed of the polymer strand 23, thereby producing stretching and. therefore, a good degree of molecular orientation of the polymer strand. This, together with the additional effects of the helical rearrangement of the fibers and the re-stretching due to twisting, allows a product to be obtained having excellent strength and stability.
Another implementation of the invention, which gives the final wire the maximum resistance. is illustrated in fig. 4. In this embodiment, a polymer strand 23 (or more of these strands) is extruded from an extruder 21 through a die 22, then is stretched and oriented to a very high degree by means of. an orientation device 30. This device is known and usually consists of a pair of sets of drive rollers (each set comprising three rollers and rotating at a higher speed than the previous set, separated by a heating member provided with a appropriate temperature regulation.
Strand 23 is first stretched to a desired degree by the first set of feed rollers. then it is heated and finally it is stretched again by the second set of drive rollers. This treatment gives strand 23 a very high degree of molecular orientation. Then, the oriented strand passes through a heating device 31, which preferably consists of a heating tunnel provided with an appropriate temperature control. There, strand 23 is heated only to a degree to make its surface tacky at the output end of the heater without losing the internal molecular orientation it had previously acquired. It will be noted here that it is certainly possible to impart to a thermoplastic extrudate, by such an operation, a desired degree of tack without adversely affecting the molecular orientation of the polymer.
This is because complete relaxation only occurs in the thermoplastic when the latter is maintained at or around its melting point for a certain time. This time depends on the degree of orientation, the thickness of the material and the extent of the contact surface. For example, in the case of polypropylene, no relaxation shrinkage occurs when the extrudate is held at 40 ° C for 30 minutes. although some shrinkage will occur if held at this temperature for 45 minutes. Likewise, if a polypropylene extrudate is heated in air for 30 minutes at 100-C, less than 5% shrinkage occurs, while heating again for 30 minutes at 1450C produces an additional 7% shrinkage.
It is therefore quite obvious that when, in the present case, the oriented strand 23 passes through the heater 31, the latter can easily be adjusted so that a certain adhesiveness of the surface is imparted to the strand with very little or no loss of its molecular orientation. This is especially so because the strand 23 advances at a speed of the order of 300 m / min and that its residence time in the heating device 31 is insufficient to obtain relaxation of the polymer even if high temperatures prevail in it. the heater, although sufficient to impart to said polymer strand a desired degree of tack.
The tackiness of strand 23 is obviously necessary so that it can be laminated and unified by rolls 11a, 12a with the web of staple fibers 24 to form a compound ribbon 10.
The fiber web 24 is fed by the supply device 25 to the constriction of the rollers 11a, 12a, and in fact two of these webs can be fed for each strand, one on each side, so that the ribbon final compound 10 consists of a polymer backing entirely surrounded by staple fibers having numerous protruding free ends and providing the desired fibrous textured surface,
This compound strip 10 is then treated as in the previous cases through a heating device 13, the heating surface of which is preferably in the form of a V-shaped groove which gradually tightens towards the outlet end 15. so that a settlement Additional between the polymer backing and the surrounding fibers can be achieved as they pass through the heater.
At a predetermined point within the heater 13, the polymer backing of the compound tape 10 is sufficiently plastic that the twist imparted by the twist 16 and propagating upwardly produces intermolecular slip in the polymer and mutual slip. staple fibers bonded to the polymer backing, as well as the coagulation of the yarn in this helically twisted state, due to the subsequent cooling. Then the twisted yarn passes linearly through the twist 16 and the tension rollers 17. 18 and is wound linearly, at speeds up to 300 mimin and sometimes higher, on the collecting roller 19 to form the spool 20 of yarn. final.
Fig. 5 illustrates a possible construction of a universal apparatus, although relatively simple and compact, incorporating the necessary features of the present invention, while FIG. 6 shows a detail of the apparatus along line B-B.
In the apparatus shown in these figures, a curtain of strands 23 is extruded through the extrusion die 22 of an extruder 21 which is held by a member 32 mounted on a height adjustment column 33. In this way , the position of the die 22 on the unifying rollers I la, 12a can be easily adjusted. The extruder is also provided with a hopper 34 into which the thermoplastic material can be introduced in its cheapest form, i.e. in the form of blocks or granules.
The continuously extruded strands 23 can have any desired cross section; the simpler section, i.e. the round, is preferred.
The laminating and unifying rollers i la, 12a have on their surface several circular grooves and one or more strands 23 are introduced into each groove of these rolls, directly after extrusion and still being in the tacky state, in order to be compressed and unified. with bands of staple fibers 24 which are also fed into said grooves on one or both sides by means 25 for supplying the band of fibers, shown in the present case schematically and in dotted lines in the form of two superimposed rolls. These means may, for example, consist of a drawing frame or any other device capable of producing several strips of staple fibers parallel or arranged in a disorderly fashion.
The rolls 11a, 12a can be driven at a speed significantly greater than the speed of extrusion of the strands 23, thus producing a stretching of these strands and an increase in their strength due to the molecular orientation produced in the polymer. I1 is generally sufficient to drive only the roller 11a, for example, by a motor 42 and a belt 43, the roller 12a being driven by friction, thanks to its frictional engagement with the roller 11a. Alternatively, a gear drive can be used for both rollers 11a and 12a, which applies a direct driving force to each roller.
The sliding roller 12a can be pressed with its grooved surface into the grooved surface of the driven roller 11a by means of an air cylinder 37 which is fixed to the frame 35 and which actuates by a bar 38 a yoke 39 maintaining the axis of the roller. roller 11a at its two ends, so as to press said yoke with roller 1 2a against the roller 11a or, on the contrary, separate the rolls from one another.
Other means for pressing one roll against the other and for pulling them apart can also be employed, and the mechanism shown in Figs. 5 and 6 have been described for illustrative purposes only, without any limitation.
The apparatus is then provided with a heating device 13 which is mounted in the frame 35. The heating surface of this device has several V-shaped grooves which gradually tighten so that, when the compound ribbons 10, after unification and the lamination by the rollers 11a, 12a, are guided in said
grooves, they are not only heated to the desired temperature but the staple fibers are further packed and rearranged helically with the polymer. Inside the grooves of the heater 13, the polymer reaches a plastic state such that a torque applied from below by a twist 16 is fused and is retained in the tape by the mutual sliding of the molecules of the polymer and staple fibers.
These
last are rearranged helically and better amalgamated
with the polymer thanks to the conditions of torsion and plasticity
of the polymer, which results in the use of resistance
staple fibers in the form of a twisted structure towards the
total wire resistance. The yield of the conversion of the resis
yarn strength to yarn strength, which is usually not
by more than 50% in conventional staple fiber yarns. is greatly increased by the binding of staple fibers to
a thermoplastic polymer support, which stops their sliding
axially in the final compound wire. For example, a
fibrous tape which has a tenacity of about 4 g / tex can be trans
formed into a tenacity yarn of about 12 g / tex.
After exiting the heater 13, in the twisted state, the
composite material is cooled in a cooling air injector
strain 36, so that the torsion in the polymer becomes
definitively coagulated. The twisted wire 40 is thus obtained and, after
having passed through the device 16 imparting torque and the tension rollers 17, 18, as well as a conventional guiding device 41, it is wound linearly on a collecting roller 19 at speeds which can reach, and even exceed, 300 m / min, to forming the spool 20 of final yarn.
The twist is therefore imparted, according to the embodiment shown in these figures, between two fixed pinch points, in this case between the rollers 11a, 12a and the rollers 17, 18, in a completely continuous linear operation producing a yarn of quality at speeds much higher than those permitted by known methods.
The apparatus is relatively simple in nature and very easy to operate. Thus, the thermoplastic polymer, for example from the group of polyamides, polyolefins or acrylic resins, can be introduced into the hopper 34 in granulated form and extruded at a speed of about 30 m / min through the die 22, in the form of a curtain of strands 23 of round cross section or other preferred shape.
The strands are extruded towards the constriction of the circularly grooved laminating and unifying rollers 11a, 12a, which can be driven at a speed of about 300 m / min, i.e. with a ratio of about 10 to 1 relative to the extrusion speed. A substantial molecular orientation of the strands 22 is thus achieved.
For the action of said rollers 11a, 12a, the strands are unified with the bands of staple fibers 24, which are simultaneously supplied by the device 25 and fed into the grooves of said rollers, and thus compound tapes 10 are formed having, for example example, a polymer fiber ratio of 50:50. Other polymer fiber ratios can of course also be used. The compound ribbons are then guided through the heater 13, provided with grooves or areas of fiber constriction and having a suitably controlled temperature, and in which the
polymer support of the ribbons reaches a plastic and lubricating state which makes it possible to give these ribbons, from below, a
twist predetermined by the twist 16 which can turn at vi
tesses up to 500,000 rpm.
Then the twisted thread coming out
of the heater is cooled so that it coagulates and retains
I've definitely had a substantial degree of twist conferred. In
after having crossed linearly a pair of ten rollers
dors 17, 18, which can be driven at a higher speed than the rollers 11a, 12a in order to produce a new stretch and
orientation of the polymer (which further increases the strength of the
final yarn), the resulting yarn is wound continuously and linearly
on the collecting roller 19 to obtain a coil 20 of wire
commercially acceptable.
It is obviously understood that many modifications
of the apparatus according to the present invention are possible and appear
easily accessible to those skilled in the art. For example, the device it
