The invention relates to the production of insulated electrical cables and wires of all types, in which a sheath is extruded directly or indirectly onto the cable or wire and the sheathed cable or wire then runs continuously through a vessel in which the Jacket is hardened or solidified or otherwise treated by the application or removal of heat.
Examples of such sheath materials are natural rubber compounds, synthetic rubber compounds such as neoprene (polychlorobutadiene), butyl rubber, silicone rubber and styrene butadiene rubber (GR-S), and synthetic plastic materials, such as olefin polymers, which are a suitable means for creating cross-linking between the molecules of the plastics during the hardening process, each of the jacket materials may contain additives to make it electrically conductive.
The cable or wire onto which the sheath mate rial is extruded can be a bare or previously sheathed wire or strand, or a group of bare or previously sheathed wires or strands forming a cable and, for reasons of convenience, all such cables should be or wires may be included in the term conductor hereinafter.
The main patent relates to a process for the manufacture of an extruded jacket on a continuously advancing conductor, in which the conductor is forced to pass through the conductor tube of an extrusion machine which applies a continuous jacket to the conductor and a continuous treatment of the so formed Sheath is effected in that the sheathed conductor passes through a chamber which is arranged at the outlet end of the extrusion machine and is sealed against the sheathed conductor and contains a medium under pressure, a second medium being injected into the interior of the conductor tube and under a The pressure is lower than the pressure of the first medium in the chamber, namely by as much
that the pressure difference across the extruded jacket at the nozzle opening of the extrusion machine is large enough to press the extruded jacket against the conductor when it emerges from the extrusion machine, but that the pressure difference is not so great around the extruded jacket into the conductor tube to drive back.
As a result of the fact that a pressure difference across the extruded jacket at the nozzle opening is used to shrink the jacket tightly onto the advancing conductor, the inner shape or nozzle tip and the outer shape at the extrusion opening need to be used for the production of jackets fitted with precise tolerances Extrusion machine not to be Herge with the same tolerance, as would otherwise be the case if the Man tel is applied by extrusion, since the wall thickness of the jacket can be controlled by changing the speed of the conductor Durchlaufgeschwindig.
Accordingly, the same set of inner shape or nozzle tip and outer shape can be used for substantially all conductors of the same nominal diameter, thereby significantly reducing the tooling costs that would otherwise result. The method according to the main patent also has the important advantage that it can be used in the production of extruded sheaths on conductors of other than circular cross-section, e.g. B. aluminum full conductor of Sek torform, with essentially the same degree of tolerance and the radial thickness of the extruded jacket can be used as for jackets of the same conductors of circular cross-section.
In addition, this method can be practiced on ladders of shaped cross-section using internal molds or spikes of circular cross-section and external molds with circular openings of the appropriate diameter, whereby a considerable saving in the cost of the die sets can be obtained.
With a view to a substantial elimination of the possibility of the formation of interspaces or intermediate spaces between an extruded jacket made of insulating material on a conductor and an underlying and / or overlying jacket made of semiconducting material, which form an inner or outer shielding layer, in wel chem interstice or interstices electrical discharges can take place, it was previously proposed to simultaneously extrude a layer of insulating jacket material and at least one layer of semiconducting jacket material on a conductor, which materials can bond with each other to provide a composite jacket on the conductor , in which complete and intimate contact is present on the surfaces between adjacent layers of the jacket material.
The present invention relates to an improvement of the subject matter of the main patent and aims to provide a method and an apparatus for producing an extruded, composite jacket from two or more layers of different materials on a continuously advancing conductor, which has all the advantages of the method and the apparatus according to the main patent.
According to the method according to the invention, the extrusion machine feeds two or more extruded, continuous layers of the jacket materials at the same time towards the outlet end of the extruder and the extruded layers come into complete and intimate surface contact in order to form a composite jacket downstream of the outlet end of the extrusion machine.
Where the composite jacket is hardened or solidified by the application of heat, the first medium may be steam or other suitable hardening medium and the chamber will generally also be a coolant at substantially the same pressure as the hardening medium for cooling the hardened one Sheath contained th. Where the treatment of the sheath involves the continuous extraction of heat, the first medium will be water or some other suitable cooling medium.
When using the method of the present invention for the production of a conductor with an extruded insulating layer which is coated with inner and outer semiconductor layers and is bound to them in complete and intimate surface contact, each of the two semiconductor layers can use the same semiconductor jacket material have, or these two semiconductor layers can consist of different semiconductor cladding materials.
In the latter case, the outer semiconductor layer can have a semiconducting jacket material which is of such a composition that the bond with the extruded insulating layer underneath is weaker than that between the inner semiconductor layer and the extruded insulating layer, thereby cutting back and stripping the outer semiconductor layer is facilitated for connection or connection purposes.
If the jacket material used for the insulating layer is XL polyethylene, it is preferred to use compatible semiconductor XL polyethylene for the inner semiconductor layer and any semiconductor polymer or rubber compound that is crosslinkable with polyethylene, such as EPR and copolymers, for the outer semiconductor layer of ethylene and propylene of suitably high melting point.
The medium injected into the jacket pipe is advantageous, but not necessarily an inert gas such as nitrogen. The invention also relates to an improvement of the device according to claim II of the main patent, which is used to carry out the process according to the invention for extrusion of a composite jacket with two or more continuous layers of different jacket materials on an advancing conductor and is characterized in that the Extrusion machine upstream of the nozzle opening determined by the inner and outer shapes has at least one intermediate shape, the intermediate shape or shapes being in relation to the inner and outer shapes and to one another so
that the extruded layers of the jacket materials come into complete and intimate surface contact upstream of the nozzle opening.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a general schematic side view of an apparatus for curing an extruded, composite shell, and Fig. 2 is a schematic longitudinal section of the head of a cross-head extrusion machine the device is.
As can be seen from Fig. 1, a bare solid conductor 1 made of aluminum of essentially sector-shaped cross-section, on which an extruded composite sheath is to be applied, which has an inner layer made of semi-conductive polyethylene with an outer insulating layer made of polyethylene is bound in complete and intimate contact with surfaces, withdrawn by a puller 3 from a drum 2 and fed to an extrusion machine 4, where the composite jacket is applied.
When exiting the head of the extrusion machine 4, the sheathed conductor 1 enters an inclined curing chamber 5 which is filled with steam under excess pressure and at its lower end with cooling water under the same pressure and is hermetically sealed at the outlet end of the extrusion machine. from which chamber 5 the wire runs through vessels with cooling medium (not shown) and is fed to a receiving drum 7 by a puller 6.
According to FIG. 2, the cross-head 10 of the extrusion press 4 has an annular spray nozzle opening at its outlet end which is defined by an outer shape 11 and an inner shape or nozzle tip 12 which is attached to the outlet end of a conductor tube 14 penetrating the head. Between the outer form 11 and inner form 12 there is an intermediate form 13. Semiconducting polyethylene 8 in a plastic state is fed to the annular space between the inner form 12 and intermediate form 13 through a feed channel 15 and polyethylene 9 in a plastic state is the annular space between the intermediate form 13 and fed to the outer mold 11 through a feed channel 17.
The intermediate form 13 is with respect to the Aus senform 11 and inner mold 12 so that the extruded layers 8 and 9 of the semiconducting polyethylene and isolate the polyethylene come in full and intimate surface contact tion before the nozzle opening. At the entry end of the conductor tube 14 there is a termination 16 which is sealed against the conductor 1 when it enters the conductor tube. The hardening chamber 5 hermetically sealed against the cross-head 10 is of essentially cylindrical cross-section and has a closure at its outlet end which seals with the composite, sheathed conductor when it emerges from the chamber.
During the extrusion of the semiconducting polyethylene layer 8 and the insulating polyethylene layer 9 together menetzt jacket on the conductor 1 and hardening of the extruded, composite jacket in the hardening chamber 5, the steam in the hardening chamber on pressure, z. B. in the range of 13.35 to 14.75 kg / cm. Stick material is injected under pressure into the conductor tube 14 and by means of a differential pressure control device, which is assigned to the hardening chamber 5 and the conductor tube, the pressure difference across the extruded composite jacket at the nozzle opening is essentially at a pressure in the approximate range of 0, 03 to 0.07 atm. spheres held.
By this method, a composite jacket, which has a semiconductive, crosslinkable polyethylene inner layer with a radial thickness of 0.5 mm and an isolie-generating, crosslinkable polyethylene outer layer with a radia len thickness of 2.8 mm, on a sector-shaped Conductor with a total tolerance of + or - 0.05 mm.
Suitable differential pressure control devices for use in the apparatus and method according to the present invention are shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 of the main patent.
Where liquid in the ladder tube can continuously escape from the ladder tube and is continuously injected into the ladder tube under the automatic control of a differential pressure control device, continuous escape of the liquid through a valve connected to the ladder tube and / or through a suitable setting of the Sealing take place at the inlet end of the conductor tube. In the latter case, the escaping liquid serves to reduce the friction between the migrating conductor and the seal.
Sealing means that are suitable for sealing the entry of the conductor tube in the device according to the invention, form the subject of Swiss patent 533 350 (Swiss application 18207/70).
